I have been unable to review this title as despite many attempts it would never download for me. I tried continually for a couple of months. I also can’t list it as not leaving feedback and this is the only way to remove it from my list.

Received a few chapter for a review on Netgalley.
The pages I read are very interesting. Made me extremely curious to see how the story would unfold.
Would definitely want to read the whole book, once it's out.

From what I have read so far, I am really captured with the story and it's characters. The book is told by Griz's perspective a young boy who lives in an apocalyptic world. He has never known what the real world is like, only stories from his parents memories and books he has read. Griz his family and dogs are very lucky to have survived seeing as only 0.0001& of the world population survived what they call The Gelding. The family have a lapse in judgement one day and trust a stranger a bit too easily, after a day or two this man runs away, stealing Gritz's favourite dog, food and other supplies, so Gritz starts chasing the stranger down to get what's rightfully his back.

This is all the story tells so far, so obviously I am gripped and want to know if Gritz successfully chases down this man and gets his dog back. I like that the end of the world feels like it's not a "big deal" to Gritz, the way he describes it is a "soft apocalypse" it just sort of happened no zombies, no virus, no big bang. I also love that he loves reading and books. He find books in places and keeps them, he enjoys reading about how the world used to imagine an apocalypse, this humours Gritz as it is nothing like the real thing. He says something only a few pages in and I just love the quote: "When I open the front cover of a new book, it's like a door, and I can travel far away in place or time." Although Gritz is just a kid he seems wise beyond his years, I like the way he is re-telling his story I find it quirky yet gripping.

I don't think this book is going to be an action packed end of the world thriller, it is more atmospheric and melancholy. The writing style and narration reminds me of The Catcher in The Rye by J.D Salinger and The Road by Cormac Macarthy. Both brilliant books but are sort of... "nothingness" they have brilliant character narration but the stories are slow and don't move anywhere. I am saying this as a positive as I really like that style of writing and book and I get the same vibe with this too. So I am excited to read the rest of Gritz's tale of how he finds his dog.

I have always been into apocalyptic fiction in books and movies and so far this novel seems to be really good, I just want to read more already and find out what happens. I can't wait for the book to be released next year so I can continue reading Gritz's adventure to saving his dog and defeating the stranger.

(I want to thank Netgalley and Orbit Books for this opportunity to read the first six chapters of this book)

Review of sampler, for Netgalley.

A dystopia story with a different kind of narrator.
Population decline with no explanation has left the world depleted, a narrator and his family isolated from other groups.

A few plot threads are hinted at - a tragic accident with long-standing consequences for the family, and the arrival of a stranger give hints of what is to come, and tempt you to continue.

I would have continued reading had the sampler been longer, The narrator is a reader, a trait I always take to, with book references to cement a bond between him and the reader. He constantly refers to the events he's describing as in the past, so we know he is speaking to us from a far-off point.

I thought the concept quite intriguing, and I was keen to learn more about a quiet world with few humans in it.

With thanks to Netgalley for the sampler.

I don't know it is an error but the sampler has only 2 pages. But i found another sampler on netgalley so i am going to review based on that sampler. It was an amazing story. When i finished reading it i wanted to read more. I usually don't read apocalypse - end of the world - type of stories but cover and synopsis got my attention. I can't wait to read the whole story.

A very short sampler of this book! Not really enough to get the feel of the story. It seems ok from the paragraph you can actually read.
