Before I start the review, I am going to say that this book has got me loving Epic fantasy again. I read it in 2 days and it put me behind in packing up my house as I wanted to know what happens.
Spread of 9 months this story follows Roper of Anakim as he tries and keeps control of his region after his father was killed in battle against the Sutherners. From the moment his father dies Roper is up against it. On the opposing side was Bellamus, a Sutherner who like Roper was having a difficult time proving himself. It is rare that when I read a book, I like both characters, but with this story, I couldn’t choose and I was cheering them both on.
From the start of this book, you were embroiled in treachery. love. death and intrigue. Whilst I tend to find politics boring, I was invested in the story and as mentioned had trouble putting it down. The battle scenes were exciting and you could imagine the clash of steel. I found myself switching sides as I wanted Roper and Bellamus to succeed. Although on both sides there were character’s you will love to hate and these characters were the ones who added the intense to the scenes.
When I finished this book, I was exhausted as I felt that I was living the battles with them. The ending gave you no doubt that there will be a sequel
