I was all set to give this novel 5 stars, but not after THAT ending! Engaged Stephanie meets happily married Jamie at an artist’s retreat where they immediately click, far more than they do with their partners. So much angst and emotion and time wasted as the years go by as they attempt to live their lives. I loved the way this book was written, how it was possible to empathise with the two main characters (and their other halves) despite what they were doing, their lies by omission and as I’m an avid music lover anyway, thoroughly enjoyed the songs running through the story. One of the very few books I didn’t want to end!

I loved the start of thIsbook. The characters were real, the story romantic, the stuggles realistic, I loved the protagonists and the way the author switched between the main characters and wrote in the first person. But I was so sad and disappointed with the ending. I didn’t think it had to be quite so sad.
Otherwise, beautifully written and a great story.

Amazon’s ‘About Roxie Cooper’ reveals she’s always had an overactive imagination. The question is; In writing The Day We Met, how much personal experience did she base this book upon or was it all from her imagination? The reason I pose the question is that given sufficient talent I could have written ninety percent of this book but as a work of non-fiction. She has nailed it! I never believed in the stars and planets aligning to enable you to meet your destiny in flesh and blood but it can and did. With it comes all the joys, guilt, hurt and recriminations so eloquently expressed within the covers. A very sad ending for Stephanie, with history more or less repeating itself.

The Day We Met by Roxie Cooper is not an H-E-A romance as I'd expected. Stephanie and Jamie meet when one of them is happily married and the other is engaged. They meet again after a year and from then on, they can't help but think of each other every now and then. Question is, do they cheat? No, they don't cheat i.e. technically, they don't have sex. Keeping in mind that I was reading an ARC, I felt some of the dialogues were unnecessary.

I constantly fretted over the fact that they couldn't divorce their spouses sooner and lied to them whenever they met. However, as the story progressed almost to the 75 or 80% mark, I started to understand them - their story - slowly. The characters are so unflinchingly broken and human that it's difficult to remind myself that what I was reading was fiction or was it? Maybe it's someone else's story somewhere.

The ending was brutal and tears ran through my eyes. I told myself that I wasn't even going to like this book and now, look at me being sad over it. If you're looking for imperfect humans, beautiful romance "Nicholas Sparks" style, then I highly recommend you read The Day We Met.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Let me start by saying that I don’t read chick lit or romance stories, totally not my genre. I am not sure why I chose this novel but it was so lovely and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In places I found it slow but it carried enough human emotion with it that I just had to keep reading to find out what eventually happened. It was a true love story but very sad in places. The characters are so well described that I could see how they felt throughout.
A great story with a unique ending.

There has been plenty of parallels drawn to One Day, and for good reason- if you liked One Day (and who doesn’t?) you will love The Day We Met. A beautifully written tale about love, life getting in the way and those funny moments of serendipity. I loved this book, it felt like a comforting blanket, I loved dipping back into it and found the characters like friends. The sort of book you wish didn’t have to end.

The Day We Met is a modern day love story in the same ilk as One Day. It tells the love story of Stephanie and Matt – an almost couple. They are two people drawn together but know they cannot be together. Why can’t they be together? Well, they both have partners. Instead, they choose to meet at the same venue every year and get to know each other better.

Ok. This is a difficult one because I really liked The Day We Met. The writing was easy to read; I liked the characterisation; I liked that the multi-perspective narrative really did feel like two separate characters. I also liked the fact that the book came with a playlist to match the moods of the chapters. That is always a big win for me. However, I dislike that I liked the book because of the whole element of extra-marital relations. Roxie Cooper is really clever in that she managed to get me to fall in love with the characters and the story whilst it goes against something I find morally reprehensible.

I really think you should read this book if you enjoy romantic stories. It is a wonderfully written book and one that will leave you questioning your own beliefs while rooting for the protagonists.

Stephanie and Jamie meet at an art retreat in 2006, and immediately realise they have an incredible connection.  The problem is they are both with other people.  Stephanie is engaged to Matt, the guy who has stood by her through some tough times and helped her find her feet.  Jamie is happily married to a girl he met at 18.  Over the next 10 years Stephanie and Jamie's paths continue to cross, but can they find their happy ever after?

When I first started reading this book it really annoyed me.  I just didn't find the story believable. If Stephanie and Jamie really have such an amazing connection and can't possibly not see each other again then how can they manage to make it one weekend a year, with little or no contact in between? The fact that they are both with other people throughout the majority of this book also puts me off.  At the start of the book neither of the main characters has children, so if they really think they should be with each other that is their time to pursue it, when there are less people involved to hurt.

As the story progressed I must admit the book did grow on me.  As we learn more about Jamie and Stephanie, and also their partners Helen and Matt, you do begin to root for them to get together.  For me the book really began to get interesting towards the end, when things started happening and the instalments were closer together in time.

Finally the ending.  I don't want to say too much as I don't want to spoilt things, but I felt kind of cheated by the ending. It wasn't what I expected, which is usually a good thing, but in this case it ruined the book for me.  I don't read these sort of books for that sort of ending.

Ultimately this was a quick and easy read.  It didn't blow me away, but it did get better after the first few chapters.  I didn't have any problems with the author's writing style or anything like that, just the plotline. It started out unbelievable and ended up as a slap in the face.  I'm giving 3*, and much as this one wasn't really for me, I would read another by the same author.

The Day We Met is narrated by both Steph and Jamie making this story a page turner. I wanted to find out what was happening in each of their lives through the year as well as what would happen when they met up once a year. The way Steph and Jamie waver between seeing each other and ending their connection kept me on tenterhooks.

The story raises interesting questions about morality. Steph and Jamie know what’s right and what’s wrong but when there’s such a strong compulsion, it over-rides logic and reasoning. There are times when I felt uncomfortable (in a good way – it’s great to be pushed out of your comfort zone). I really wanted these two to be together, backing them 100%. I felt every layer of emotion that these two did. Life doesn’t always give us what we want in the way we want though does it …

I loved the arty/music theme of communication that runs through the story. Roxie Cooper has a playlist on Spotify – well worth a listen.

I didn’t expect this story to grab me in the way that it did! I put that down to Steph. I really enjoyed her narrations and felt as if I really got to her know her. Being invested emotionally in this wonderful woman broke my heart into tiny pieces.

The Day We Met is a perfectly paced story about the reality and messiness of love and life. It’s about the choices we make, based on what we know (or think we know) and how those choices determine our future. A compelling and outstanding read. It truly is #OneEpicLoveStory

Stephanie and Jamie's was definitely an epic love story and I absolutely loved it. I immediately could feel a very special connection between them and as the years passed and they kept meeting once per year, I couldn't but root for them, even when they were still committed to their own partners.

I found Stephanie to be a very interesting and complex character. She worked really hard on learning to love herself and she deserved a lot better in life than what she got. She was inspiring and she made this book a very special one. In contrast, I didn't feel that connected to Jamie, especially in the first part of the book. I did love how he kind of wake Stephanie up and made her realize she was worth a lot more but while reading his story, I kept getting mad at him. She was a lot braver than him.

As you can see, I was pretty invested in this story. I went through so many emotions while reading it and it took me by surprise several times. This is a very emotional book, so make sure to have some tissue ready, there will be tears.

The Day We Met is a very well written love story that will make you ask yourself many questions. It's up-lifting but heart-breaking too. It's honest but complex. It feels real from the first page to the last. And just like love itself, it's complicated and messy but totally worth it.

A Perfectly Imperfect Love Story

I have to say that I became totally engrossed in the tale of Stephanie and Jamie’s love story. Roxie Cooper managed to create a very realistic scenario of the difficulties faced by two people locked in unhappy relationships but so wishing to be with someone else.

The complexities of family and career added to the tension as the two tried to find a way of making sense of their situations. A revelation from the past helped understanding and that things could be perfectly imperfect. I anticipated the ending but none the less it was well written and rounded the book off well.

I’ve already sought out the author’s other book and look forward to reading that too.

BTW The Day We Met would make a great film.

I didn’t like this at all, possibly because I don’t see anything romantic about two people having an affair. The writing was ok, but I didn’t like the characters or find them relatable. They were self involved. Not a book for me.

I'm going to be blunt here, quite frankly I do not know why I requested this book. It's made very clear by the blurb that this is about two people cheating (dress it up as romance all you want, it's cheating, end of). Saying that, I felt compelled to read it for some unknown reason and I want to say now, I didn't hate everything about this book, and I tried to read it with a completely unbiased mind - I failed.
***SPOILERS***
Maybe it's my hatred for cheating that has made me read too much into this book, but when Jamie and Stephanie meet, she's vulnerable and he kind of preys on that by flirting (even though I don't think it's intentional and you know, it takes two...). It hurts how clearly unhappy Steph is in her relationship with Matt - they're not right for each other. He is not a nice person, between trying to avoid them seeing her family because he's not their biggest fan, and the constant pressure on her for them to have a baby, then what he does to her which completely ends their marriage, I mean some would say karma.....
I don't dislike Helen and even though it's clear that her and Jamie have grown apart, and regardless of whether it would have happened with or without Steph in the picture, she doesn't deserve what they did to her. Saying that though, Helen isn't perfect, what with always trying to get Jamie to get a better paying job - even though she thinks she's doing what's best for them, it's actually what's best for her and not all of them. I really hope she found true happiness with a good person in the end.

I really enjoyed this book. Somehow things are just meant to be....Jamie and Steph are meant to be but both are with other people. I loved their characters, Roxie Cooper gets you inside their heads and lives and you live out their problems with them. Lots of love, laughter , family truths and sadness. The book didn't end how I expected it to, but definitely the right ending. Perfectly imperfect!
Highly recommend. Hope Roxie Cooper has written more...will be reading

An amazing story by an amazing writer, full of romance, laughs and tears.

A lot of people might shy away from a 'romance' involving possible infidelity, but this is written with such emotion and passion, and the main characters are both extremely likeable despite their situation.

They are soul mates, but with other people, with other lives. Life gets in the way of them being together.

I got swept away in reading this epic love story.
