I like books that have a bit of a mystery about them which this one does. When Anna gives birth to her first daughter she relives the part of her life where her parents committed suicide a year apart. The book goes back and forth and explores her relationship with her mother, her daughter and her baby's father. Short chapters which is what I like. It was a good read without too many characters.

Thank you for the advance copy

I honestly couldn't stop turning the page from once I had started this book till this end. It truly had me gripped. I enjoyed its exploration of whether it is better to let sleeping dogs lie rather than digging up the past as you never know what you might find.

I’ve read many of this author’s books and have enjoyed them all. The storyline sounded intriguing with Anna’s parents committing suicide, but makes you think if it was really suicide or murder? I liked Anna’s character but found myself switching backwards and forwards with my opinion of her. She’d obviously had an awful time with both parents dying so soon after each other, but some of her other life choices were questionable. I thought her relationship with her partner, Mark was a little rushed, particularly falling pregnant very soon after meeting him.

The storyline is told from the perspective of both Anna and civilian police worker/ex-detective Murray McKenzie who is looking into the idea that Anna’s parents were murdered. I liked Murray’s character and empathised with his storyline, both with his wife’s mental health struggles and his longing to be working back as a police officer. The storyline twisted and turned, starting off slowly and building pace as it moved on. Some of the plot seemed a little far-fetched at times, but it held my attention and kept me guessing as to where it was heading. As with this author’s other books, it was well-written and full of suspense and tension. Murray’s side of the storyline was by far the more enjoyable, but Anna’s character was interesting and full of questions! Would recommend.

Anna is in the throes of having just become a mother to newborn Ella whilst also dealing with the grief of her parents having committed a double suicide. When an anonymous card arrives on the anniversary of her mother's death stating "Suicide, think again." From here everything unfolds throughout the book.

Clare is a captivating author, who can use words to weave a wonderful story and really brings things to life for the reader. She is emotionally intelligent and can really add a tenderness to many different emotive issues found within any one of her novels. She writes from the heart and often appears to draw on experiences within her own life. Detective Murray who agreed to investigate the possible murders of Anna's parents was dealing with his wife's mental health issues for which she had been institutionalised. Mackintosh really brings a tender yet raw take on this thread within her book. Murray is such a likeable and heartwarming character and his character adds a lot to the story. Another area where this is evident is within Anna's struggle as a new mother dealing with the day in, day out of struggling with a newborn baby whilst also dealing with the additional grief and stress of the situation.

I enjoyed this book; however, I think some of her other books are superior to this one - this is not a criticism; these books are really very good and Let Me Lie is still a good book. It was not quite as fast paced as I let you go/ I see you but it does provide a twisty ride and is a book which you will want to continue reading. I found some elements of the story a little predictable whilst other parts were completely unexpected.

If you are a fan of Clare Mackintosh, definitely read this book! If she is an unknown author to you, begin with some her other works (they are all standalone books) and then read this one after you have fallen in love with her writing style.

Thank you to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for my ARC of this book.

I just could not get into this book. Unfortunately I ended up not being able to finish. It is worth me noting that this is more a reflection of me than of the book which I am sure will be a favourite for someone!

Read in one sitting. A good, twisty thriller that keeps you guessing till the end. Short chapters keep the pace up. I liked the way the book was set out.

Another gripping page turner from Claire Mackintosh. She gets better with every book. I was gripped from the very first page right until the very last. There are a lot of twists to throw the reader off the scent and I had a few wrong guesses. Highly recommended

This is one of my go to authors for a twisty on the edge of your seat read.

Well written and plotted as I'd expect from this author and I thought the (obviously well researched) mental health angle and Murray's struggles and sadness kept my interest throughout the book, he was a wonderful character and I'd love to see more of him in future books. I did struggle to engage fully with the rest of the characters and felt that the ending was a twist too far.

I wonder if my enjoyment was hindered a little by my expectations, both previous books have been in my top 10 of that year. Please don't misunderstand me it is a really good book, just not quite up to the exceedingly high benchmark the author has set with the previous two - I'm already looking forward to reading her next.

4- 4.5 stars

I am a huge fan of Clare Mackintosh and have read and loved both of her previous novels.
This one was a bit of a slower burner but did pick up the pace. Had a great twist that I did not see coming!
Would recommend.

It's a real rollercoaster read with a story that has stayed with me for days after I finished reading it.

It begins with Anna, mum to a new baby who is facing the first anniversary of her mum's suicide, plus the suicide of her father seven months previous to that. The story draws you immediately and I found myself really warming to Anna and the emotions that she was experiencing. Then the first sucker punch hits you - an anniversary card arrives with the words Suicide? Think Again.

Anna then sets off on a mission to prove her theory that her parents were actually murdered - but were they?

The story flits between the viewpoints of the main characters, including Anna and Murray, the retired detective who takes on the case. Through these viewpoints, and the tiny nuggets of story that are slipped in as you go, as the reader you never know quite where you stand and that's the beauty of it. There's certainly no predicting the outcome here, and the characters are so well formed that the real answer could lie with any one of them.
