I love Clare Mackintosh’s books and was excited to finally read Let Me Lie (I’ve been looking forward to it for quite a while!)

Anna, a new mother, is struggling with the identical, though seven months apart, suicides of her parents a year earlier. When she receives a message on the anniversary of her mother’s death implying that it may not have been suicide after all, Anna can’t just let it lie. But is she prepared for what she might find?

Murray Mackenzie, a retired police detective now working for the police in a civilian role, is both intrigued by and sympathetic to Anna’s situation and takes it upon himself to do some digging.

Let Me Lie is the very definition of an intriguingly twisty psychological thriller, and incredibly well executed. While I did guess to some extent where things might be headed (and suspected everybody, as one does), I most definitely didn’t guess all of it and the ending was a surprise.

Clare Mackintosh has been a police officer herself, and it shows - there is a definite ring of authenticity about the policing elements of the story.

I adored the character of Murray, possibly the world’s loveliest man, and his beloved wife Sarah, who struggles with Borderline Personality Disorder and has spent her life in and out of hospital. Both were refreshingly original characters and it was heartening to see a character with mental disorder where it was neither glossed over (there’s no avoiding the impact of Sarah’s long term condition on both her and Murray’s lives) nor is it a plot point in itself, nor does it entirely define Sarah’s personality. Both Sarah and Murray are fully realised and sympathetic characters.

While suicide is an undeniable theme throughout, I feel it is done in a sensitive and thoughtful way.

A brilliant read.

Anna is struggling with the death of both of her parents within a few months of each other after they both committing suicide. On the anniversary of her mother’s death, she receives an anonymous card causing her to question whether it really was suicide.

It’s so hard to get into details without spoilers so this is going to be one of those books that you need to read for yourself as I would hate to spoil it for anyone. Also with all the drastically varying reviews on this book, I’d say it is best to make up your own mind, I personally feel like it was worth the read!

It is a definite slow-burn psychological thriller but it definitely picks up after part two so stick with it, it is well worth it.

Told from multiple narrators viewpoints the story alternates between Anna, an unknown, and a retired detective named Murray which I really loved. The twists were very well done with some that blindsided me in a really good way.

I read a lot of suspense thrillers so I am used to keeping everyone in the suspects column and generally it always ends up being the person you least expect, and yet knowing this, this book still caught me off guard 😀

When the truth does eventually come to light be prepared, you may need to dab at your eyes 😂

I would definitely recommend it to any suspense/thriller lover regardless of other people’s reviews/opinions. Read it for yourself as it is one you will have to make your on mind up!

I thought this book was a bit strange. It wasnt as good as her others but then again it was a different type of story. Good unless. You spot the twist.
