I'm a huge fan of Gregg Hurwitz and started with all of his earlier thrillers my favourite being *You're Next* and I am also thoroughly hooked on the Ophan X series. Out Of the Dark is the fourth book in the Orphan X series and I would definitely recommend you read them in order for max enjoyment and to get the full story. Evan Smoak was taken from a group home at the age of 12 and entered into the Orphan X program where he became known as Orphan X he later escaped and became known as the Nowhere Man....the man you went to when you were truly desperate knowing he would do anything to save you. The head of the Orphan X program Jonathan Bennett headed the now defunct Orphan X program and used the orphans to carry out his own corrupt agendas has now achieved his lifetime dream of becoming the President of America and he needs to kill all of the orphans to cover his tracks and Orphan X is at the top of his list. Will he succeed you will have to read on to find out!!!!

Thank you to Bookouture, Gregg Hurwitz and NetGalley for the arc of Out of the Dark my review is honest an unbiased in any way.

The US Department of Defence takes orphan children and trains then as assassins. Evan, Orphan X acquires a conscience and wants to kill the person who was in charge of the program, but he is now the President. Out of the Dark is a fast paced, shoot-em-up action thriller. Although some of Evan's escapades stretch one's credulity, Hurwitz provides a lot of detail of the planning giving it a degree of believability. I had not read the previous books in the series, but did not feel as though I was at a disadvantage. If you particularly like this genre I would recommend reading them in order as they are very enjoyable.

This latest installment in the always thrilling Evan Smoak series does not fail to enthrall and entice fans of the franchise. Our favorite former dark operative is on a mission, and this time it's personal. Following the death of his mentor, Jack, Evan is determined to take his quest for vengeance all the way to the top by taking on his greatest challenge to date. He needs to get to one of the most highly guarded men on the planet, the man who is currently trying to cover up all the loose ends and killing off the evidence of his past indiscretions. Can Orphan X take out the President of the United States?
While the largest focus of the story is on this assassination attempt, and lets face it, if ever there was a man who had a chance of pulling it off, it's Evan, its never quite that simple. Distracting him from his mission is a blossoming attraction to his neighbor, and a quest to help an innocent man who got into trouble for following the rules . Luckily he does have some help ,from a young hacker he helped previously, as well as from another more unexpected source.
As with every Orphan X book, the author gives us a masterclass in tension, building and developing a multilayered plot where nothing is left to chance, and every possible scenario is accounted for and brought together in a thrilling conclusion that still manages to surprise. Fast paced and action packed, this is a real page turner, and a really entertaining read,
I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.

Evan Smoak aka Orphan X aka The Nowhere Man is back and this time, despite the commandments, it is personal and the target is the President of the USA.

Gregg Hurwitz has produced an action packed thriller which picks up where the previous book finished and sees Orphan X trying to save his life whilst, of course, helping others.

There is plenty of technical detail but this does not distract from what is an excellent thriller and a highly recommended read

Absolutely loved this - fantastic pacing, excellent action sequences and a generally sound plot line. One of my favourite series at the moment!

Orphan X is back and has his toughest mission ever. How do you go about killing the most heavily guarded man on the planet? Greg Huwitz delivers another action packed book that surpasses its predecessors on every level. The action set pieces are stunning and crank up the tension to eleven. Evan Smoak is back and wants Reachers Crown as biggest badass. I for one, would give it to him.

I love this series and was really exited to discover the latest book available on NetGalley. Without giving any spoilers, 'Out of the Dark' is another complex story in the Orphan X series, which sees him up against other former orphans as well as some figures from his past, including one at the highest level!

There are a number of unexpected twists to the plot, and an unlikely alliance which is hard to feel secure about being genuine. I think that this is the strongest book in the series so far, and the author seems to becoming more comfortable writing the characters now. It reminded me a bit of the first few Rebus books, which I thought went from average to really good. It works as a standalone book because the characters are briefly introduced, but is a far more rewarding read if the series is read as a whole....now when is the next one!

In the lastfour months I have read the first theee Orphan X books, and now courtesy of Netgalley who kindly gave me Out of The Dark, the Fourth book, to review.
I never go into detail about the books I review, others do that for me, and the back of a book, always gives the outline of the story anyway.
Netgalley had no idea that I’d read the first three books and found them different, original, almost addictive, and enjoyed them so much.
And so to book four: It was everything the previous books had been, brilliantly plotted, exciting, dramatic and one of those books you just don’t want to put down - you should read it yourself, you’ll be hooked.

Another great action packed book with Orphan X, trying to help a young man who's family have been killed, at the same time as trying to assassinate the President while been hunted by another Orphan who wants him dead!!! It was non stop from start to finish I was exhausted for Evan!!
I really hope in the next one he can have a happy life too.

This is the fourth book in the Orphan X books. Evan Smoak as a child was trained to because a secret agent. As an adult Evan leaves the project and goes it alone and helps people in need. His stories are filled with adventure and near misses. I love these books because it true escapism, it's an adventure that's not always realistic and just what I need at times in my life. Many compare Evan to Jason Bourne or Jack Reacher which is true however for me I think he has more depth to his character.
You can read this book as a stand alone as with all the Orphan X books as they do refer back to Evan past however to get the fall picture and fanatic read I would start at the beginning.

Literally one of my favourite series going at the moment. Finished in 24 hours, and utterly compelling. It's s superb blend of action, intrigue, and a slice of compassion here and there from a trained killer - not what you'd necessarily expect if you're new to the series. Evan Smoak is like Bond and Reacher rolled into one. A tortured soul looking to balance the scales after years of killing for his country. Some great little sub-plots with Trevor, set against the backdrop of a much larger struggle. Cant wait to see what happens next.

Orphan X, also known as the Nowhere Man is back for a fourth go round. For those needing a catch up, once again Hurwitz provides a primer early on. A deep secret American project to take orphans and train them to be killers. Evan Smoak, aka Orphan X, turned his back on all of that and has been on the run ever since. As the Nowhere Man he also helps people in trouble (usually in LA) as atonement for his life of killing.

Only someone is killing the orphans and their trainers off and it turned out in book 3, Hellbent (spoile alert) that the man behind this is the President of the United States. Former head of the Department of Defence, the President has some skeletons in his closet, somehow associated with Smoak’s first mission in 1997. Smoak’s personal mission now is to find out what the connection is and to kill the President. But the President knows he is coming and releases one of Smoak’s nemeses – Orphan A – along with the might of the US security services to stop him. Not only is Smoak’s plan constantly portrayed as impossible, at the same time he has a mission to complete as the Nowhere Man for a man who’s life has been turned upside down by a viscous gang of drug dealers.

Evan Smoak is a classic thriller hero. He has a Jason Bourne-eque way of using whatever is to hand whenever making his escapes (in one case this is a table, a handful of salt and a green tea cha), trying not to kill anyone who is not his target. But he is also incredibly well planned, so that everything that looks like a setback turns out to be some sort of contingency-planned fakeout. And he is constantly trying to juggle his personal mission with his commitment to solve the problems of his most recent client and try to have a normal relationship with his neighbour and her 9 year old son. Smoak, still a relentlessly effective killing machine, is slowly becoming more human from one book to the next.

Out of the Dark will delight thriller lovers. With its mix of weaponry technobabble, well written action scenes, a sly sense of humour and likeable but tortured main character and some great side characters, it ticks all of the boxes. While it can probably be read as a standalone, Hurwitz economically fills in the blanks when characters from previous books appear, but the Orphan X books are definitely better read as a series and in order.

My first Orphan X novel!!!

And WOW! What a thrilling read that was. I normally don't really read books like this, but I am so so happy I tried it. There is so much tension and action and it is extremely well written. Can highly recommend!

This is the fourth outing for Orphan X, the Nowhere Man and it is every bit as thrilling as the previous books.
Orphan X alias Evan Smoak has been brought up as an agent, part of the orphan programme where children are taken from foster homes and trained to be secret agents working for the American government.
The book opens with a flashback to Evan’s first mission when he was 19 where he carried out an assassination: this is key to the whole plot. The duplicitous and scheming President of the US is trying to kill Evan due to something pertaining to this earlier mission.
Evan plans to neutralise the President and find out why he is so set on killing him and the other orphans. What happened in the 1997 mission that the President wants to hush up?
As well as all this Evan is summoned to do his good deed by Trevon, whose family has been murdered by some evil gangsters. He certainly has a lot on his plate in this book and one way or another the action does not let up!
I also enjoyed Evan’s interactions with his neighbour Mia and her young son, his attempt at a normal life.
His developing relationship with her is interesting, particularly as he’s not sure about the proper etiquette for such situations.
A thoroughly enjoyable read with the only drawback being I will now have to wait a considerable time for the next book in the series.
If you like Jason Bourne or Jack Reacher it would be well worth giving Orphan X a try.

This is fast becoming one of my favourite series, and it has stiff competition I can tell you, and I think that this, the fourth in the series, is my favourite to date. Obviously with the complexity surrounding Evan and his life thus far it is best to start from book one and read in order. Yes, OK there is a bit of a catch-up contained in this book but in my opinion, it serves more as a memory jogger to what has gone before rather than an alternative to skipping it.
So, we start back in the past with Evan's first assignment as Orphan X. Why we are shown this will become evident as the book progresses. Back in the present and the action continues where the previous book left off with someone high in power trying to eradicate all traces of the Orphan program, including the Orphans themselves. That someone, high in power being the President of the US himself and it looks like the only way for Evan to stop this happening is to kill the most guarded person in the world. But, he is Evan Smoak, Orphan X, the Nowhere Man, if anyone can, he can... but can he? Especially when you factor in that whilst Evan is planning the assassination, the target is still well and truly on his own back and the man who has this target in his sights is no fool either being an Orphan himself. Oh and don't forget that, as the Nowhere Man, Evan is also duty bound to answer his phone and help whoever is on the other end of the line. He's going to be a very busy boy!
The action in this book comes thick and fast and, as always, it is fascinating to see how Evan will get out of some of the tricky situations he repeatedly finds himself in. I love the way he tells his adversaries what is going to happen before he starts, he's a bit tell then show if you like! The other thing I also love is when it is listed what he is going up against and then what he has at his own disposal, meagre as it so often is.
I'm not going to say much more about the story but I think that the Nowhere Man part of this book was probably the most emotional to date. I'm pretty sure that Evan himself would agree being as he did break a few of his rules whilst assisting his client. Yes, by their own nature, they are usually pretty full on but this one took that up a notch.
And then there are the parts with Mia, no details, but I do love seeing the vulnerable side of Evan as he struggles with "normal life" and what it entails when you have emotions and stuff! Its these parts that keep the book balanced for me and, highlights his struggles with being "human" which explains why he does what he does in his other, more exciting and frenetic life.
All in all, another cracking addition to what is already a winning series. The only downside is that I now have to wait to see what's next in store in book 5. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
