In an increasingly separatist world, this action-packed novel explored white supremacists, domestic terrorism and of course, the obligatory flawed hero rescuing his damsel in distress.

There were many cliches, lots of tension built up by the time-stamped chapters and lots of gritted jaws and desperation.
It’s not original, it’s not unputdownable, but it was an enjoyable holiday read nonetheless.

Many thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

'The Last Widow' is another rip-roaring read from one of my favourite authors, Karin Slaughter. It was quite literally unputdownable and I finished the book in two days! This latest instalment in the Will Trent/Sara Linton series of books see our protagonists, along with the unforgettable supporting cast of Faith and Amanda of the GBI, caught up in the machinations of the 'IPA', or 'Invisible Patriot Army', a far-right paramilitary organisation dedicated to the overthrow of the American Constitution and the U.S. government.. Such organisations are far from antithetical in modern America and Slaughter effortlessly embeds contemporary issues about the nature of government and its citizens' obligations into a memorable mystery thriller that informs as well as entertains. In this Karin Slaughter's books are unsurpassable in the same way that Patricia Cornwell's earlier efforts were.

I was breathless until the end of this book.
Bravo Ms Slaughter!

This was another Sara Linton and Will Trenton thriller, in the fashion we have become use to by a very talented author. I just love their relationship, how they complete each other, and accept each other as flawed human beings. This was a well written, gripping read that I enjoyed until the end. Highly recommended.

For Karin Slaughter’s many fans this will be another enjoyable read, although they will have to have developed the necessary tolerance levels for the deaths and mangled injuries that tend to tend to be a feature of her work. There is the usual evidence of a well-researched subject and a plot that is generally highly credible - in this case a religious/far right terrorist group intent on sending a message to the world, written in the blood of their many victims, about the righteousness of their world view. Slaughter’s characters in this novel are as well-developed as you would hope and expect and feature the vulnerabilities and weaknesses that tend to be something of a trademark of this author. Similarly, the reader is treated to the standard fare of a generous helping of medical jargon and potential ways that death may come to find the unwary victim!

For reasons that are not entirely clear Ms Slaughter paints the FBI as a less than competent and highly political organisation that is reluctant to cooperate with local law enforcement even when such cooperation is clearly in the national interest - shades of the 9/11 investigation findings perhaps?

I loved this book and couldn’t put it down. From the start I was hooked. I’ve read a few of Karin Slaughters books and this one certainly didn’t disappoint. It was interesting, exciting, terrifying and disturbing. Prefect for any thriller fan.

The Last Widow is a joy to read. The author keeps the action going at a fast, sometimes frantic pace. The characters are well drawn and the reader gets just enough insight into their lives to relate to them. A very well written and enjoyable story. I thoroughly recommend it to everyone.

This is another "stay up all night and finish it" book from Karin Slaughter. I have been reading her books from the beginning of her writing career and I know she won't shy away from killing off a key character if she feels the story demands it. This adds a strong element of tension and excitement all her books. As always she has a great supporting cast of characters, some who you love and others who continually irritate you but her books wouldn't be the same without them. I look forward to the next thriller from this great author.

I enjoyed this book but not sure I enjoyed the style in which it was written. Though I liked the main characters there were some that I couldn’t connect to.

I can totally see why the ratings on The Last Widow are so good. If you enjoy serials following officers/detectives, then you'll likely love this and I'm sure it's yet another outstanding entry in the Will Trent series.

Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of those type of books. I really don't like following a single person through crime after crime. It's just personally unappealing to me. I dislike it more when I only realise the book is one in a series after I've begun reading it. Which is unfortunately what happened with The Last Widow.

I will say this didn't stop me reading the book as, for the most part, books like this always tend to individualise the story anyway, so I wasn't having to jump in to an ongoing plot. Which makes it all the more frustrating that I just didn't enjoy this book. It took me till I was 70% of the way through before I even got invested in the plot. I struggled with DNF'ing for a while (something I never do). I just never really cared about the characters...

I did somewhat enjoy the final third and it was sufficently tense and well-written to keep me turning the page to the end but that's pretty much where the compliments start and end.

As I said, I completely get that for some people this will be an incredible thriller but for me, it just didn't hit at all.

Thanks to HarperCollins and NetGalley for providing me with a copy for review.

I really enjoyed the story. It was fast paced and kept you guessing. The characters were quite convincing and the plot was well researched. This is the first story I have read with Sara and Will and will definitely read the others.

I have not read any of the previous books about Will Tent and Sara Linton; although this book can be read as a stand-alone, I did feel I would have benefitted from knowing the ‘back story’. The book opens with a dramatic scene and continues at break-neck speed. However there were quite a lot of narrative passages which slowed down the book quite a lot and I found myself skipping bits, and I found some of the sections of characters repeating the action in their own narrative dragged the book down. The story is interesting in its theme of right-wing terrorism, but it was a bit too drawn out for me to thoroughly recommend.

This book has been a long time coming. I was lucky enough to get a ARC thank you Harper Fiction.
Great read, and as always with Karin Slaughter you just never know where the story will lead. Brilliant installment in the Will Trent Sara Linton series.
The characters in the story are well written, I really felt frustration and anger towards them as intended with the writing.
The story is scary in its simplicity. Karin Slaughter you do not disappoint.

Wow Sara and Will are back and I have to say I have missed them and Karin Slaughter you blew me away with this book!!

Michelle Spivey a scientist who works in disease control, is out shopping with her 11 year old daughter Ashley, when a van pulls up alongside Ashley, fearing for her daughter she runs over to the van but it is Michelle who they kidnap.

Dr Sara Linton and Will Trent are about to have a meal with Sara’s family, when they hear an explosion and go running towards it. They discover a road traffic accident but Sara senses something is not quite right. Sara ends up being taken and Will is left behind badly beaten up!!

Will goes undercover into a world of terrorism and violence, prepared to do anything to get Sara back.

Another gripping book by Karin Slaughter. I couldn’t put this down!! I still have a massive crush on Will but I”m glad Will and Sara are happy together. I feel like I know them as friends rather than characters in a book.

This series just gets better and better. I cannot wait for the next instalment.

I have to confess I’m thinking about starting this series again from the beginning as I’m enjoying it so much. I may have to lock myself away for a week though to enjoy them without interruptions!!

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.

This is the 9th book in Karin Slaughter's Will Trent series. I haven't read any of the other Will Trent books, but I'm a huge Karin Slaughter fan so I decided to read the book anyway. I don't think it mattered that I hadn't read the previous books, and this worked well as a standalone title.

The book begins with a woman being kidnapped.

A month later, Will and Sara are at a family dinner. Suddenly they see explosions at the nearby Emory University campus. Since Will is a police officer and Sara is a doctor and medical examiner, they both run to see how they can help. On the way there, they stop to help victims of a car accident - and Sara is kidnapped too, by the people responsible for the explosions at the university.

Will is thrown into a tense race against time, to rescue Sara and find out who these men are and what they are up to. The seemingly random criminal acts they have committed must be connected somehow, but it isn't clear how. It's up to a traumatised and injured Will and the Georgia Bureau of Investigations to find out and stop them before it's too late.

As always for Karin Slaughter, the book is very well written and the character development is excellent. You really understand each person's motivations and who they are. The storyline is very clever and there are no plot holes; it's complex but very intelligent, it's almost more like a spy thriller than a police thriller. I liked the fact that you had the viewpoints of both Sara and Will in the book - one on the inside and one on the outside. It means that you always know what's happening on both sides and there are no blank spaces in the story.

The only downside to this book was that it was a bit long, and a bit slow. Usually I adore Karin Slaughter, but I found I didn't enjoy this one as much as her other books I've read. That being said, I did enjoy reading it and it was a change of pace from her other novels and something a bit different. I would still go back and read the other Will Trent novels, as he was an interesting character and I would like to know more about his backstory.

Any novel by Karin Slaughter is good and this did not disappoint. This story gripped me from the beginning reading late into the night. A great novel by a great author.

I loved this book, Will and Sarah are two of my favourite characters in a series. If you haven't read any of this series before, I highly recommend starting from the beginning. If you can start with the Grant County books as they first introduce Sarah Linton. I am jealous of anyone not having ready any having so many books to read in concession. I won't give up any of the plot, only to say it's brilliant.

I'm not going to lie, it took me a while to get into. I kept putting The Last Widow down and picking it back up. It didn't help that I thought I had read #8 in the Will Trent series, but I hadn't so I was subconsciously putting myself off - however, it once I did get into it, I couldn't put the book down. I went from 29% to finished over two evenings.

The story was complex at times, but it was so cleverly done - even if it did feel a bit much at times - I loved how it all wrapped up, even if I did realise how it was going to end for the inhabitants at the camp.

The pacing was fast, the story well plotted. I enjoyed the short time period and how we got to see the three main storylines converge, and obviously seeing Will, Sara and Faith again was great.
