Someone Else's Skin  by Sarah Hilary.
D.I. Marnie Rome 1.
Called to a woman's refuge to take a routine witness statement, DI Marnie Rome instead walks in on an attempted murder.
Trying to uncover the truth from layers of secrets, Marnie finds herself confronting her own demons.
Because she, of all people, knows that it can be those closest to us we should fear the most . . .
A brilliant read. I loved Marnie. I'm looking forward to the next book. 5*.

I would like to thank Sarah Hilary for writing a great starter to a series that I think will be marvelous. I found the characters rather weird at times. Not knowing where some of them are going.

DI Marnie Rome is a woman on a mission, but her past keeps haunting her to the extent of her job.

My first read by Sarah Hilary is a decent and compelling start to a highly promising series with a powerful female protagonist.

A story that delves deep in to abuse, in particular abusive relationships. It’s well done and has twists and takes a good few unexpected turns.

Written very well, it’s a polished police procedural and a series i look forward to following up on

A very good read, if somewhat a slow burn but it’s intense and extremely taut at times . Just maybe felt a few pages to long.

Thanks to Headline and NetGalley for me review copy

This is a very good start to a series. Well written and with believable characters, it drew me in quickly.
The ending was a bit of a let down unfortunately. After such a good lead up, it could have been better, but will look for more from the series.

DI Marnie Rome is a Detective with a history. A history that she’s desperately trying to process. Five years ago her parents were brutally murdered by a boy they’d adopted and treated like their own. Rome is searching for answers and a motive but her parent’s murderer has so far given her nothing apart from more questions. As she battles with these demons, Marnie Rome also has to tackle her caseload and her latest case is as challenging as they come.

While visiting a women’s refuge to interview a witness, Rome and her partner DS Jake walk straight into the aftermath of a stabbing. Hope Procter has stabbed her husband after he arrived at the refuge, seemingly to make amends. As the two detectives try to get to the bottom of what happened they also have to track down their witness, Ayana Mirza, who has been kidnapped by her brothers.

I’ve come to the Marnie Rome series quite late but this is an excellent introduction and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series. Marnie is an interesting and complex character and is everything you want from your fictional detective. She’s dogged and sharp as a pin and I really feel like there’s a lot more to come from her in future books. Her partner, Noah Jake makes a perfect foil for her and I certainly hope to see more of him too. The storyline was gripping to say the least. There’s three threads running throughout the book but the author manages to juggle these with ease. It’s perfectly paced and I found myself racing to the ending with no idea how it would conclude.

There’s so much fantastic crime fiction about at the moment and a lot of series demanding our attention. I’m really glad I’ve taken a chance on this book because I’ve been rewarded with a brilliant story with a terrific character and hopefully a lot more of the same to come. If you’ve not been introduced to this series yet then get started. You’re in for a treat!

I received a ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for a fair review.

This is the book that started it all... and what a start it was. Unfortunately I did not read the books in sequence, so I think there is a reference or three I might have missed, but this book is still very entertaining, and sets the tone of all the books to come! Recommended.

A brilliant start to a new series compulsive reading, well written and will be watching for the rest in this series. Although I do have to say the ending was a little bit of a let down, a bit too predictive to be honest.. only hope the endings in the rest of the series gets better. Looking forward to completing this series. Providing the ends get better

I loved this. Hilary writes brilliantly: pacey and believable, but also with the most fantastic and often beautiful turns of phrase. The full package. I will absolutely be reading the other Marnie Rome books and recommending them to those who I know love thrillers. Best I've read in ages.

This is a very promising start to a new detective series.
It is well written with great flow.
The characters are likeable and believable and I felt myself looking forward to finding out who was culpable and why.
Sadly I found that the ending was less than satisfying, a bit of an anti climax after a good build up.
I would award it 3 stars.

I’ve possibly came quite late to discover D.I. Marnie Rome as there are now several books in the series, but this is the first I’ve read.

I’m intrigued at where the next books in the series take the main characters as by the end, I was enjoying the story. However, it took a long time to get into this and at times it was confusing with the several storylines going on at the same time.

On saying that I liked the underlying issues of “control” and secrets.. everything came together in the end and left me wanting more. I just wished the first 3/4 of the book had a bit more pace.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the arc.

I enjoyed Someone Else’s Skin. I have read a couple of the later ones in this series and was glad of the chance to read the first.

This is a police procedural featuring DI Marnie Rome and DS Noah Jake which deals with some pretty dark issues of domestic abuse. It does it with realism and generally unsensationally, although there is a longish episode of effectively torture which teetered on the border, I thought. It was redeemed by avoiding many of the clichés and stereotypes of the genre, though, and the story is by and large convincing – and the psychology is a lot more plausible than it often is in crime novels.

The great thing about the book is that Sarah Hilary can really write. Her prose is readable and unflashy, but is very evocative. This gives a flavour: “Her features clustered sulkily at the centre of her face, corralled by pallid, marbled flesh.” The book is full of these little gems of description and it’s a pleasure to read.

I do think that Hilary overdoes her characters’ personal lives. The book opens with the murder of Marnie Rome’s parents, for example, something which rather dominates the books and which intrudes a bit more than I’d like. I also thought that two tense climaxes was rather implausibly excessive. However, overall it’s a very good, gripping read which deals well with tough issues.

(My thanks to Headline for an ARC via NetGalley.)
