I wouldn't call this book a gripping psychological thriller just a cosy, good read.

A slow burner in my opinion but I did enjoy it and all the characters and I would probably read more from this author.

Thank you to Netgalley and Hera Books for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

I was disappointed by this book it just didn’t do it for me. Found it quite slow & just didn’t keep my attention.

Honestly, I was so bored. It was repetitive and dull and so SLOW. For example, hearing the same story about how Pilar and her husband were different people before the incident. I wanted to throw my kindle across the room every time this came up. It sounded whiny and added nothing.
Plot wasn’t going anywhere and Pilar was beyond annoying with her helplessness and cheating husband. Ugh. The ending was less than mediocre.

My Last Lie is the story of Theo and Pilar who have just moved to Cornwall following a terrible tragedy in their lives. The couple are clearly both hiding something from each other and there is an underlying tension from the beginning as they are just about to find out that you can run but you can never hide from the secrets you try to keep.
This novel is beautifully written, I got a very real sense of place, finding myself in the heart of Cornwall and village living. I could almost smell the country air, see the small village and indeed imagine myself in Theo and Pilar's home. It is not a fast-paced read and if I'm honest I did find the pacing frustrating at times. I felt as though something was missing in terms of building the suspense. There were some hints, some of them real and some of them red herrings but I was left wishing there had been a bit more intensity to them throughout the book. It meant that when the revelations came they seemed a little too neatly sewn up for me.
Pilar and Theo were not the most likeable characters and I found myself struggling to connect with them. But you know you don't need to "like" a character to enjoy them right? I certainly trusted neither of them, definitely unreliable narrators. They were a little bit middle class for me and at times I found them a little bit patronising in their behaviour towards some of the other characters. There was something very cold and aloof about them and definitely no evidence of raw and very real grief I'd have expected from them given the tragedy they had experienced.
There were a number of other characters in the novel some of whom were more likeable than others. I'll let you work out for yourself which ones you liked and who made you a little suspicious! I particularly enjoyed Mrs Bellows who owned the village shop. She was exactly what I imagine a small village shopkeeper to be like, knowing everything and everyone. I also loved Flo and her mother Janet. These were two characters whom I really connected with and wanted to know much more about them. I'd love to hear their story!
My Last Lie is a well-written novel with some extremely beautiful and descriptive narrative. It provides a fabulous sense of place and while it didn't tick all of my personal boxes it would be perfect for those who like their crime and psychological thrillers on the intense and cosy side and perhaps not so much for those who prefer a faster pace in their reads.

Just dumb. Not enjoyable, thrilling, or even a good escape.

2.5 rounded up
