7/10

Short and sweet introductory book for a new series/character coming out. There was enough in here to make me want to read the full feature with the usual Deaver treats and twists but I can never really get too invested in something which is over in such a short time.

I'll hopefully pick the full length novel up when it's out.

Thank you to HarperCollins and NetGalley for this book. Jeffery Deaver , what can I say that hasn't already been said about this great crime writer. Another great read featuring a new character in Colter Shaw in a short story format, giving us a feel for future stories. A giant of the genre and once again he doesn't disappoint. Brilliant.

A really great short story. It isn't often that I read a short story and enjoy it as much as a full novel, but this was a well written story with good depth. I liked the characters and am now looking forward to the next Coulter Shaw book. I would certainly recommend this book to readers who don't like to commit to a whole novel.

This is a short story introducing a new character Colter Shaw, a sort of bounty hunter, who is asked to find a missing wife. I actually enjoyed this although short it is an enjoyable read and a fantastic introduction to the character. The kindle version includes an extract of the upcoming first novel and I will be definitely read This book The Never Game when published.

Thanks to NetGalley for an early read of this new character from Jeffery Deaver. This short story did not have too much of an original plot, but how much can you get in given the number of pages. I hope there will be many more adventures and look forward to reading the first full length volume.

This is a rather short story that the author has written to introduce his new protagonist, Colter Shaw, in his new series to come. Shaw is a man with a background that hints of a interesting past growing up home schooled by his parents in a isolated and remote part of California. His father is an increasingly paranoid survivalist with whom Shaw appears to have unfinished business. Shaw is a self contained and resilient loner who travels around the country finding missing persons for the reward money. He travels everywhere in his highly secure motorised home, having made enemies given the nature of the work he does. He does have back up people that he uses when and as necessary. He is in Indianapolis, Indiana, to meet Ron Matthews, a car dealer whose business has suffered a down turn in recent times.

Matthews is married to Evelyn 'Evie' Fountaine, a art professor and artist, painting in the layering art style. Evie has disappeared and Ron wants his wife back, offering a $10 000 reward. Shaw looks at the options of what could have happened, working out the odds of each option's likelihood as he looks into Evie's life. In a tightly constructed and well plotted narrative, there are surprises, twists and danger, as we learn just how good Shaw is at his chosen profession. I am not sure why Deaver felt the need to write this short story, it is adequate, but a full length novel would have offered far more opportunites of considerably greater depth in the introduction of Colter Shaw. However, I will admit to have been interested sufficiently interested in wanting to read the first book in the series. Many thanks to HarperCollins for an ARC.

This book does what it says on the tin, and it does it very nicely! It's an introduction to a character that Deaver is basing a new series around; reward hunter Colter Shaw.
In this book we meet the guy and follow as he does his thing to find a missing wife, the husband having put up a reward. As per what you would expect from the author, things aren't quite as they appear to be and we get the, now famous, Deaver twists which, in this case, weren't on my radar but executed as well as he does for a full length story!
It's only a short book, even shorter than expected as the version I read also includes the first chapters of the full length first in series book dues out in a few months, but it introduced the character well and made me hanker for more from Mr Shaw. Job done really!
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

Captivated introduces Colter Shaw, Deaver's new protagonist who's shortly to feature in his own novel, The Never Game. It's a short story, and this will be a short(ish) review.

Shaw makes his living from reward money, travelling up and down the US in a Winnebago - going wherever the rewards are. Seemingly a solitary, self-sufficient man (we learn a bit about his childhood in a remote rural compound with his mother and his increasingly paranoid father) he's clearly a competent operator, always calculating the odds before he gets into anything.

In this story, it's a missing person case. Car dealer Ron Matthews' artist wife, Evelyn, has vanished and he offers a ten thousand dollar reward to Shaw to find her. But what's really going on here? Has Evelyn been kidnapped? Is she having an affair? is she trying to get away from an abusive husband?

Shaw runs the odds, takes notes, and begins his enquiry. I liked the way Deaver makes what happens plausible; the investigation, Shaw's misgivings and his determination not to do anything that might put Evie in danger, above all the way that he (eventually) roots the solution to the whole thing in little details that I hadn't noticed first time round. It is a mystery in the best sense, even if the length of the story - and the nature of events - doesn't allow much scope for character development. That can come in later books.

For bow it's clear that Shaw is resourceful, honourable, and has support he can call upon when he needs it. he may be a loner but he doesn't seem to be one of those fictional investigators who runs off into danger without - as I said, weighing the odds.

It augurs well for the forthcoming novel where I hope we'll learn more about Colter Shaw.

#NetGalley #Captivated I love Jeffery Deaver books especially the Lincoln Rhyme series but wasn't sure what to expect from this short story. An introduction to a new character Colter Shaw - a modern day bounty hunter. As with any introduction to a new series, there was a lot of description to give us the background to the character. When the action came, it was well written with the necessary twists to keep the interest piqued. However, for me, because it was so short I did feel a little short changed and unable to warm up fully to Colter Shaw and therefore I would have preferred the first in the series to be a full length story. I still want to read the next in the series though before I give a final judgement!
