When Darkness Calls by Mark Griffin was a brilliant read. I read the second book first "When angels Sleep" before I read this one. Then had to go and read the first book. I was hooked from the beginning to the end.
All the characters were great and played great parts within this story.
So looking forward to Marks next book within this new Holly Wakefield series.

I highly recommend this book it was a refreshing new find especially a new author.

A-MAZING! This book is a hidden gem. The story and plot twists were absolutely incredible with characters that were scarily believable. I don't want to ruin the plot for anyone so I wont go into detail but you are constantly guessing who the killer is right until the end. Incredible writing and a real page turner. I cannot reccomend this book enough.

A gory, dark and complex psychological thriller. NHS Criminal profiler Holly Wakefield specialises in treating serial killers. So when Met Police DI William Bishop is tasked with catching a killer posing his victims, Bishop calls upon Holly's expertise. Trouble is, their main suspect is already behind bars. Do they have a copycat? With a plot full of twists and suspense this debut will keep you gripped until the final page.

I rally enjoyed When Darkness Calls. It was pacy, had some good characters and an interesting plot. I figured out some of the story early on, but I bloody well enjoyed the ride to the reveal. I would happily read more from this author, he knows what crime thrillers should be!

This is the first book in a new series featuring Criminal Psychologist Holly Wakefield who is brought in by police to help them solve a serial killer case working as a profiler.

It is a well written and compelling read which will appeal to readers who like gory, dark thrillers with lots of twists.

I enjoyed the book but got a bit fed up with the endless references to actual serial killers and found myself skipping these paragraphs.

I will definitely look out for book number two in the series.

I was offered the chance at an advanced reading of this book and I’m so please I was.

The story follows Criminal Psychologist Holly Wakefield who is brought in by police to help them solve a serial killer case.

It was refreshing to have the story from a different view to that of the lead police officer in a crime book and I also liked how it delved into her carrier with her patients.
I enjoyed the connection between Holly and lead investigator Bishop, and look forward to more from the duo.

The story was fast paced and gruesome in parts which I like! It also built suspense well and had me on edge a few times which I also enjoy in a book. More than one great twist at the end. I enjoyed this very much and would definitely recommend to fellow crime lovers.

Thanks to Little, Brown Book and Netgalley for the advanced copy of the book to read. All opinions are my own

Do you dare to look into the eye of a serial killer...?

When Holly Wakefield, who works for the NHS as a criminal psychologist specialising in serial killers, is asked by the Met Police to assist in investigating a recent killing, she jumps at the chance, then the pathologist reveals this is not the first time she has seen these mutilations, which means a serial killer is out there, and they're going to kill again - soon.

This story is told from the point of view of Holly, which is a refreshing change, she also has her own demons which she tries to keep hidden from the investigating team, but secrets have a habit of coming out, the question is, will they see her in a different light when they know they truth and will she be able to help them unmask the killer before it's too late?

This is a great debut novel, in a series I hope, that we are going to see more of from this author, it's a dark and, at times, gruesome read and definitely not one for the squeamish amongst us. The plot is very unpredictable and I wasn't prepared for the jaw-dropping sting in the tail when it was finally revealed who was behind the murders. A very gripping read with lots of twists along the way.

I'd like to thank Little Brown Book Group UK, Piatkus and Netgalley for the auto approval, I will post my review on Amazon and Goodreads.

Holly Wakefield works for the NHS as a criminal psychologist specialising in serial killers. She gets called in to help on a case of brutal murder which has been linked to another case.

I enjoyed this book right up to the end I liked the characters of Holly and Bishop and the story line moved along at a good pace. However I found the ending a little disappointing as it was a bit far fetched.

Holly Wakefield, a criminal psychologist specialising in serial killers, encounters a dramatic change in her life when she is called upon to assist after two bodies are discovered. Working alongside DI Bishop, she is horrified to find that it is not the first time that she has seen these injuries – there is a serial killer at work. More used to dealing with incarcerated murderers, she finds herself involved with an active investigation and a killer who shares a connection with her past. A past that, for the first time, she must face head-on…

Holly’s occupation gives her an ideal background to assist with the case, and her insights soon help to unravel details that may, possibly, have been missed. It is safe to say that she has a slight obsession with killers and one particular scene where she ‘introduces’ Bishop to her own version of Scotland Yard’s Crime Museum was a very entertaining interlude in an otherwise thrilling plot. I enjoyed how Holly referenced real-life murder cases to support her theories as this added an air of authenticity to the plot.

We can tell from quite early on that Holly has a past that she would rather keep hidden, but like most secrets, they don’t stay hidden for ever. I liked how the professional relationship between Holly and Bishop developed to the point where there was a lot of mutual trust and secrets started to be shared. There is a lot of potential in this pairing and I look forward to seeing how this relationship develops in future books.

There are some particularly gruesome killings in When Darkness Calls and some equally detailed postmortems. This all culminates in a fast-paced final few chapters with some genuine heart in the mouth moments. There are numerous twists and turns along the way, meaning that when the killer is revealed it is a genuine surprise.

When Darkness Calls is a fantastic debut and looks like being a superb new series. I look forward to reading the next one.

When Darkness Calls is a serial killer book told from the point of view of the Criminal Psychologist Holly Wakefield. I liked that it wasn't from the police point of view for a change. Holly is an expert of serial killers and there does not see to be anything that she does not know about them. I did find the book to be a bit too long and struggled to stay focused but overall a good story.

Holly Wakefield works for the NHS as a Criminal Psychologist specialising in serial killers. When she receives a call from DI Bishop from the Met asking for her help she jumps at the chance. Arriving on the crime scene of a murdered wealthy couple she learns that there are signs that this is the same killer the Met have seen before. She throws herself into the case, determined to show the Met what she can do. This is a dark and gruesome book that is not for the faint hearted.

Thanks to Little, Brown Book and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.

Firstly thank you to Little Brown Group and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this absolutely fantastic book.
I am fascinated by serial killers etc and this story totally satisfied my curiosity. It is totally gripping and a real page turner. The 2 main characters of Holly and Bishop were totally believable and the book is worthy of 5 stars .Loved all the facts about killers that Holly quoted!! A brilliant touch. I cannot wait to read the next in this series. I have no hesitation in recommending this book.

As it’s badged as a ‘Holly Wakefield thriller’ it was clear who the main character was going to be and I liked the fact that she was a criminal psychologist rather than a detective and gave it a different perspective to the usual police thrillers. I was a bit surprised that she seemed to be the driving force of the investigation rather than just advising the police and it just felt a bit off to me. On balance I’d have preferred a bit more of DI Bishop and a bit less of Holly.

When Darkness Calls is the debut novel by Mark Griffin and it is an interesting and exciting police action thriller.

A murder victim results in DI Bishop asking Holly Wakefield for assistance due to her knowledge of murderers and profiling however as the body count increases who is behind the murders and how are thevictims being chosen?

The twists and turns come thick and fast and the book did hook me in although the way a non police officer took centre stage and a couple of other minor procedural quibbles slightly detracted from the overall story.

Did I enjoy the book? Yes. Would I read the next one if it became a series? Yes. Would I recommend this book. Yes again

When Darkness Calls by Mark Griffin opens with a tantalising first chapter, definitely a promising start for a new crime series by Mark Griffin featuring forensic psychologist Holly Wakefield. I’m a huge fan of crime thriller series (in case you hadn’t already guessed) something guaranteed to make me pick up a book is one that features a serial killer add in a forensic psychologist in the shape of Holly Wakefield (forensic psychology is another subject that fascinates me) and it was a book I just had to read. When Darkness Calls is definitely one for those who enjoy a crime thriller that’s veers to the dark and gruesome, it’s compelling with many a nail biting scene to keep the most hardened crime thriller riveted.

Holly Wakefield, is a criminal psychologist who specialises in the study of psychopaths and serial killers, some of whom she works with at a London psychiatric hospital. Holly is given the chance to work as a profiler with Detective Inspector Bishop and his murder squad. Their investigation begins with the discovery of an elderly couple murdered in their country home and it leads them to discover a trail of deaths stretching back more than 20 years.
Holly is a refreshing protagonist for a crime thriller, she’s a walking, talking sickopedia, of serial killers and their macabre crimes, it’s clear she is committed to her job, she’s driven, and she’s quirky, but beneath the veneer are some very dark secrets that Holly would prefer to keep hidden.

One of the things that makes this book such a compelling read is the author’s clever ploy of using Holly’s unhealthy obsession with serial killers as part of the plot she relates details of infamous killers, their motives and their methods to the ongoing investigation which I found fascinating, this give the reader an insight into the unknown serial killer, as well as making this crime thriller all the more disturbing. The investigation takes a very dark and seriously twisted route, as Holly and Bishop chase a serial killer who is one sick individual, a master of control, manipulation and domination.

There aren’t many books that make me grimace, some of the crime scenes and autopsies are graphic and pretty gory to say the least, but in the author’s defence they never feel unwarranted. When Darkness Calls is perfectly paced, it’s a dark tale (definitely my kind of read), with compelling characters, there’s a palatable sense of terror that permeates each page of this well thought out crime thriller. Did I mention this is the author’s debut novel? Well it is and what a fabulous start to this author’s writing career, in my opinion Mark Griffin is a new and exciting voice in the crime thriller genre and I will definitely read the next book in the series without hesitation. Highly recommended by me

Review will be posted on my blog soon

Police are called out to a naked man found sitting in the middle of the road and covered in blood. They ask him if it was an incident with a car. "Oh no" he tells them, "the incident is in the bath"!! And from that point in the very first chapter I was hooked. Holly Wakefield is a criminal psychologist with a personal and professional obsession with serial killers. She works in London, splitting her time between lecturing at King's College and as an NHS criminal behavioural analyst to patients at a secure facility called Wetherington Hospital. She is called to a particularly nasty crime scene by DI Bishop of the Metropolitan Police when his usual forensic profiler is indisposed because of a family crisis. Initially horrified by what she sees, she gradually gets to grips with her new role and starts to provide the police with some interesting insights into the killer's personality and motives. When this case is linked to an earlier one by the pathologist fears arise that they may be dealing with a serial killer who has a very distinctive signature. And one who more than likely will strike again soon. Holly is a complex and quirky person but she certainly knows her killers. Throughout the book she makes lots of interesting references to real life serial killers and their crimes. Although this strikes Bishop as a little bit creepy there is a growing mutual respect and they start to form a good working relationship. This book is dark and intense, featuring great characters and a chilling plot that truly had me gripped. The last few chapters - simply explosive!! If you want a great story with twisted killings then this is the book for you. A debut novel, it is the first book of a new series and I can't wait to get my hands on book two!
