Was a bit dubious about this book when i started. However I really enjoyed it. Didn't know if i was coming or going. Good short chapters. Good characters each with their own story to tell. Hiding secrets from one another.
Will be reading more by this author

This was a great read for me , the roommates of the title are a group of freshers sharing student accommodation , each and every one with a secret they are hiding . When Amber , disappears after just a few days , apparently to go travelling Imo finds too many similarities to what happened to her sister and starts investigating what really happened to Amber . The girls all come together with the help of their strange flatmate Riku and a tangled web is revealed . Interesting and fast paced .

Well the cover is great!
Covers DO sell don’t they and this one drew me in and I was already imagining the story before I read a word

The reality didn’t match

The story is based around a group of University Students who find themselves sharing a flat as they embark on their Uni life, all peculiar and all with back stories, one of them goes missing and the rest, some half heartedly, try and find her

It’s told by them all, in a chapter each affair and it was easy to get them confused and tbh my mind wandered more or less straightaway as, for me, 1 of them with a big secret backstory is acceptable but all of them, nah, didn’t work for me really

The writing was ok, the stories believability did not improve as it went on and although I finished it I wouldn’t have been too worried if I hadn’t

The ending was welcome!

A Great Read:
Five fresher students share a flat in the University Halls of Residence; Imogen, Phoenix, Tegan, Amber & Riku. Four girls and a mysterious young man. the girls rapidly become friends. Each though has a secret which they would rather not share with their new student friends. Each a tragic secret.
Each of the girls is psychologically damaged in some way or other. Main character is Imogen who has lost her sister, Sophia. The details of Sophia's disappearance is gradually revealed throughout the novel. Each of the students has a secret they would rather not share with their flatmates. Gradually however the secrets are revealed.
Amber disappears, ostensibly travelling. But Imogen suspects that something bad has happened to Amber and only gradually manages to convince her fellow girlfriends that she might be correct.
A slow start but the novel gets better and better the further you read. Be prepared for surprises.
An absorbing thriller and one I'd definitely recommend to other readers. The novel has a slow start but once the pace picks up you'll find it difficult to put down.

This book was truly unputdownable. I absolutely adored all of the stories - it kept me guessing and reading until the early hours. Thoroughly recommended.

The book is about 4 girls who are roommates when they start University. They all seem to be hiding things from their past and you wonder what secrets are going to come tumbling out. Imo seems to be the only one who is concerned when one of the girls disappears. Her concerns gradually feed into the other girls and they do try to find her.
It really makes you guess what is about to happen next and what the girls are hiding from each other. I enjoyed the sense of embarking on a new life at Uni and the excitement of the freshers week alongside the thriller element with the mystery running through,
I would be keen to read more from Rachel Sargeant.

A little bit disappointed with this one.. I just couldn’t get into it. It took me ages to read it as nothing happened throughout. It only picked up a little towards the end. I have read other books by this author which were good, but this one is a shame
Thank you netgalley for the opportunity to read this

I second-guessed my instinct to read this thriller of four girls off at uni thinking I was well beyond those years and what interest could The Roommates hold for me, a late forties reader? Well, it turns out there's more here than meets the eye and I am glad I took the dive.

Four girls from different backgrounds become flatmates at uni. Each has their own secret but something is clearly amiss when one suddenly disappears a few days into fresher's week. Imogen, a shy retiring girl who has recently dealt with the disappearance of her sister, sees something really wrong and cannot let it go, driving Teagan and Pheonix to distraction. But, is she correct? I will honestly say at this point I didn't give a fig but as the story firmed up I was hooked. I did see the main twist coming a mile away but wasn't bothered that it seemed so obvious. The camaraderie between the girls with the unveiling of the clues made the journey interesting and, though they hardly ever went to lectures, I was keen to see how everything would play out. The Roommates is a fun distraction for both adults and even uni students looking to dodge a bit of homework.

This one gripped me. Anyone who's been to university will remember the drama of the first day in halls, trying to remember everyone's names, trying to fit in. This group of roommates all have secrets to hide, new histories and personalities to invent. It kept me awake until gone midnight because I needed to finish it. One of my top 5 of 2019. Recommended.

I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

An enjoyable, intriguing read, but compared to others that I've read this month, this one didn't didn't keep me at the edge of my seat, and I wasn't over engrossed.

The Roommates tells the story of students Imogen (Imo), Amber, Phoenix and Teagan, who are all starting at the University of Abbeythorpe (or the Abbey as it’s known). It’s freshers week and the girls are moving into their rooms. There are five of them in the flat, including one male student, Riku, who is a man of few words, rather secretive and keeps himself to himself. Not surprising really, being surrounded by all these girls!

The girls don’t have much in common: they’re from different social backgrounds, have different family circumstances, and are doing different courses. Imo is doing German and business, Amber is a theatre studies student, Phoenix is studying mechanical engineering and Tegan’s degree is in business.

Though it was over 20 years ago, I remember well arriving at university and moving into my small room, with the help of my parents, and meeting new people, chatting and trying to suss them out, just as the girls are doing in this story. It’s a time when you can reinvent yourself, forget about past events and try and leave bad memories behind. No one knows who you are or were and they know nothing about your past or your family.

Each of the girls seems to be hiding something and wanting to leave their pasts behind, looking to start afresh. As Imo says: ‘University is supposed to be a new start, without the nightmares.’ Is it going to be that easy though? Surely not! The story is told from multiple perspectives so we learn more about the girls as the story progresses. Imo is struggling to move on after an unresolved traumatic event, which is slowly revealed in the book, Phoenix and Tegan both have unusual backgrounds, Amber has a difficult past and all the girls seem to have problems with their families.

When Amber disappears after the Freshers’ Fair, just days after they all arrive, it’s assumed she’s quit university and her mum seems to confirm this when she comes to collect Amber’s belongings and says she’s gone travelling. Imogen, especially, isn’t so sure and becomes rather obsessed. Eventually, the girls are drawn together to investigate what has happened to her.

Suspicions fall on their flatmate, Riku, who regularly receives strange parcels and doesn’t talk to anyone, as well as a tall, mysterious, brooding man wearing a black hoodie who seems to be following all the girls around and spying on them at various times, often while just standing there smoking. What is going on?

Overall, I enjoyed this book. I really liked the descriptions of university life, rather reminiscent of my time at uni, and was intrigued by how the story developed – it went in a direction I wasn’t expecting and I hadn’t really guessed how it would all be resolved!

There were several twists and turns and some interesting revelations about all the characters. The girls were all quite different and it was fun to see them clash as they learnt more about each other.

I’ve got Rachel’s other two books, The Perfect Neighbours and The Good Teacher, on my Kindle so I’ll definitely be bumping these up my pile now!

A good psychological thriller with some twists

I am afraid this book did not reallhy interest me at all. I found the names of characters, and their personalities just too pretentious for words. I read about 50% before deciding that my life was just too short to waste it reading this nonsense. The plot goes from bad to appallling and it is really silly.

The modern Miss Maples!! Four girls in their freshers year at uni are thrown together as they become roommates in their university digs.

A fast paced read, told from multiply points of view.

Loved the characters just goes to show that everyone has skeletons in their closet and not everything is as it seems.

Four girls become roommates at Uni. They are all very different & each has something in their lives they don't particularly want to share with others. Imo (Imogen) is still traumatised by her sister going missing a while ago. Phoenix has a rather unorthodox background, Tegan is the rich one & Amber is the one who always seems to have something wrong! The girls attend an event highlighting the activities they could engage in during their free time & during it something seems to spook Amber & she rushes off.

At first it seems Imo is the only one concerned when they haven't seen Amber since but her persistence eventually gets everyone else on board & there ensues a hunt for her. Once everyone gets on the same page, events move swiftly & things move quickly (a bit too quickly for believably for me!) However overall it was a fairly good read. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

I imagine this is a marmite book - you'll either love it or hate it. Unfortunately for me, I didn't like it at all. I couldn't gel with any of the characters, and couldn't see any personality in any of them. In fact, I only got as far as 30% in before deciding to call it quits. For these reasons, I won't review this book on any of my social media platforms.
