You may be shocked to hear that the title of this book was what first grabbed my attention, given how understated and innocuous it is.

There’s a real sense of fun about this book. It throws you right into the action as soon as it opens, with the team in the middle of a heist. You get to see the characters under stress and with their relationships strained from the get-go, which allows you to get a great sense of their dynamics but also what the status quo is – who is friends with who, and what the pressure points are. It’s also a great way to establish the limits of Teagan’s powers. She can only move things that are inorganic, within 10 feet of her, and which weigh less than 300lbs. Using her powers exhausts her, so when a miscalculation on the heist forces her to push them to the very limit, she’s tapped out as the story begins – which makes for a very interesting dynamic, and means she discovers more about herself and her abilities because circumstances force her to strain beyond her means. It’s also interesting that a team has been built around her, but she is not the focal point – if anything, she’s viewed as a liability, the handicap from making the team as effective as they could be, even though no-one else wants to be there either.

It’s not often you find a story which starts with the protagonist already at the end of her reserves, and for me it really added to the dynamic. That, and the fact that the main plot takes place over a period of less than 24 hours, makes for an extremely fact-paced and gripping read. There are very few moments when the characters get to stop and rest, and those are generally short-lived when they happen.

This isn’t a fantasy book – it’s science fantasy perhaps more along the lines Dark Angel. We’re drip-fed information through Teagan’s narrative and it becomes clear that the reason she has these powers is because of her parents and the genetic experiments they conducted on her – although no-one can say why making these changes to her DNA has given her these powers, and she has baffled any other scientists who have tried to explain it. She’s also convinced, completely and utterly, that she is the only person with powers in the world. Evidently the plot suggests otherwise.

There are two voices in this timeline – Teagan’s, which is first person and full of her stubborn, persistent personality; and Jake, who she is trying to find, even though she has no idea he exists. His narrative is third person, and very introspective – he is a philosopher and a historian, and you get the impression he is not naturally a violent person, but he is lonely and increasingly desperate. Whilst Teagan’s story is a murder mystery thriller, Jake’s is a tragedy of almost Shakespearean quality. He begins with no ill intentions, but things escalate beyond his control. Ford does an excellent job of making him a very sympathetic character, and as the book charges on, you find yourself hoping that Teagan will find him soon and perhaps things might have a chance of ending well.

The narrative absolutely bombs along, because it is set over such a short time frame. It’s a brave storytelling choice, restricting the bulk of the action to a single day, and whilst that could make things seem rushed, the two contrasting narratives of Teagan and Jake balance each other out to keep the pace steady. In fact, at points perhaps it felt the opposite – there were scenes which felt a little slow, but I think this is mostly because the urgency throughout means that any scene that isn’t just them collapsing with exhaustion is a waste of precious time. Whilst that can be frustrating as a reader, it also perhaps speaks to how gripping the plot is.

Teagan as a protagonist is unusual, in that she isn’t a teenager – she’s 21. But her life was so sheltered and disconnected from the rest of the world, she seems like a teenager. Part of that might also be that her life is in the hands of someone else, and she feels like nothing she does really matters because her time and very existence are all potentially limited anyway; but we also see her dreams for a future that is entirely her own, where she runs her own restaurant, and those moments really soften her and help round her out as a character.

It becomes clear that this is the first in a series, and I think the sequels will really help develop the world, but also allow us to see Teagan grow and develop in light of the backstory which is revealed during this novel. There is a lot of ground to cover, backstory-wise, between Teagan, her crew, and Jake. It never feels exposition-heavy, although some of Jake’s reminiscing can be a bit longer than perhaps grips the interest, and the biggest twists and reveals are saved for when they will be the most effective. They pack a punch.

I’m looking forward to the next in the series and seeing where Ford takes the story from here.

Briefly:

A fast-paced, but still fun science fantasy story, with elements of murder mystery and conspiracy thriller all piled up inside it. A variety of narrative techniques mixes up the pace and makes it a very easy read.
Teagan is probably not a character for everyone – she has a bold personality, and it informs her narrative voice. It took me a while to settle into her, but once I did I enjoyed the rhythms and style, although some of the pop culture references felt a little forced or jarring at times.
It’s a great use of restricted timeframe to build the story structure, and I’m looking forward to seeing what techniques Ford uses in future books. Whether he chooses to keep the same structure to show us the world in small flashes or try experimenting with something new to allow himself time to expand things at a leisurely pace.
Rating: 4/5 – a great first start to a series, which promises to have a lot in common with Dark Angel, a series I absolutely loved.

A fast paced, quirky fantasy adventure about a woman with psychokinetic powers (hence the title of the book) who is 'recruited' by a USA government group to thwart bad guys, and...well, some crazy sh*t happens. The book is perhaps a few pages too long, and the story is a little drawn out in places, but it's a heck of a lot of fun and has huge sequel potential.

So, I'm one of those who was drawn to this book by the title! I do love a good "does what it says on the tin!" It also had the chance of being a bit on the bonkers side, another thing I also really love so... I jumped right in and had a bit of a wild ride!
Teagan Frost has a special skill. As the title suggests, she can move things (amazon friendly edit) with her mind. Obviously she has been snaffled up by a government department, and set to work in a team, utilising these special skills. Well, it's either this or the threat of them experimenting on her - all a bit Hobson's choice! On one such outing, things go a bit south and her and her partner are lucky to escape. But the fallout is a bit more than the threat of discovery as a body is found at the scene, killed in a way that only she could achieve. But she didn't do it. Despite claiming her innocence, she struggles to convince the rest of her team and is given only 24 hours to prove it.. And so begins a rather dangerous cat-and-mouse game, fraught with danger as, not fully knowing who to trust, Teagan faces a race, both against time and an unknown enemy, as she battles to stay alive long enough to clear her name.
This book hits the ground (literally) from the very first page and the action doesn't let up pretty much all the way through. There are parts that give a bit of respite and keep the book balanced, but these are few and far between and it's never long before it all kicks off once again! What I did like about the main issue in the book, the moving stuff with the mind bit, is that for the most part, this is just accepted as fact rather than the author going into pages and pages of whys and wherefores. The how is partly explained, but I guess there's more to come from that in future books.
It helped that I took to the MC right from the start. Her kick-ass attitude complemented her vulnerability and, to a certain extent, her naivety, and all combined to make her a personable character. She is also incredibly sarcastic throughout the book - a girl after my own heart there!
Other characters were also well drawn and developed nicely as the book progressed.
Pacing was good - pretty much high octane throughout, with the aforementioned quieter moments which allowed me to reflect and regroup before off we went again.
The storyline was interesting and intriguing throughout and kept my attention nicely for the majority of the book. Yes there were a few contrived moments and leaps that came out of little, but nothing you wouldn't find in any other book of this genre.
All in all, a bonkers romp that I enjoyed and which left me on the whole satisfied. I'm definitely interested in seeing what's next... My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

Sadly to my dismay, this book turned out to be one that really wasn't for me. I persevered to 21% before I called it a day and gave up. It just may be that I wasn't in the right frame of mind for it, many other reviewers have loved it. I would recommend that other readers try it for themselves, it might just be right up their street. So many apologies, the characters were not ones that drew me in and the storylines just didn't work out.

Super snarky and highly entertaining - this was a really fast paced adventure that made me laugh. I really enjoyed the characters and Teagan is probably one of the most irreverent female leads that I've come across. Wise cracking, smart mouthed and pretty messed up, she's also toting some pretty cool super powers. It wasn't perfect, but I really enjoyed it and that's the important thing.

This was a bit confused at times and it made me frustrated trying to read it, when it wasn’t frustrating me it was kinda fun, but unfortunately the effort was lost by then. It sounded so interesting and could have been so great but just felt a bit lost. A shame.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion

I loved it. The title was perfect and it gave me a smile everytime i see. The story was action packed with a badass female main character. I love Teagen. She is not perfect. She wanted to be normal and full of sass. I loved every character. I laughed a lot. There was never a dull moment. This book was full of surprises. I can't wait to read book 2.

I’m going to start by saying the censorship in all of the summaries, titles and reviews has me chuckling - every time I see it I have a little smile.
Anyway, on to the book.
I really liked Teagan, she felt like a grown-up version of every messed up YA heroine with superpowers (I particularly felt she resonated with Maximum Ride but that’s a comparison I draw often). I actually think this would be a good transitional book for those wanting to move from YA into more adult supernatural fiction but who aren’t sure where to start. This book has more violence and more swearing but other than that it could read as YA pretty easily with just a few age changes. So, if you’re looking to read more adult fiction alongside your YA addiction (like me) then I would recommend this.
What I liked about the set up for this book is that, while it was a little cheesy, it managed to walk the line of ‘no-one can know about her powers’ without it becoming unbelievable or silly. I’ll never forget reading a spy book about a new mother whose partner didn’t know she was an assassin who hid a gun in her bathroom cupboard on the grounds that he never looked there. This book doesn’t do that, in part because it takes place over such a short amount of time - just a couple of days - so there isn’t time to get bogged down in how these people, this crew, is integrated with society, they just get on with the situation at hand.
I haven’t read a good ‘murder mystery turns into an action story’ book in a while and it was nice to step back into the genre. I thought that the mystery was well done, with a good amount of red herrings and backstabbing - again without feeling too cheesy.
I’ll be interested to hear from people who know more about these things, what they felt about the representation of people who are homeless was like. It’s obvious that this author really loves LA - where the book is set - but is also aware of the ‘faults’ of the city. I knew shamefully little about Skid Row and this book prompted me to do some research. There are some other topics onto which this book sheds light - that I can’t go into here because it would be a spoiler - but I did appreciate that the story encouraged you as a reader to go out and learn more about things - that’s always a sign of a good book as far as I’m concerned.
I was left feeling eager to read the sequel - I definitely want to see what happens next for these characters!

This was such a fun read, it follows the main character Teagan, who has Psychokinesis or PK for short, so she can indeed move shit with her mind.

Tegan works for the Government, who send her on secret missions, simply because she is able to do things that other people can’t.

But all in all Tegan is a young girl, she thinks her abilities are cool, but that’s really about it, she wants to be able to drink beer and have a good time, she really isn’t that bothered about working for the Government, but she does know what will happen to her if anyone ever found out what she can do, so she does the bare minimum, much to her teams frustration.

Tegan’s real passion, is food, and not any old food, she really wants to own a restaurant, and her dream is to eat in every swanky place she can to get ideas for this, but this is just a pipe-dream.

The last job that she took on with her team didn’t go according to plan, and now a body has turned up, but he could only have been killed with powers the same as Tegan’s, she is adamant that she didn’t do it, but her team-mates are not so sure, so she is given 24 hours to prove her innocence before she is reported.

A really fun read, I loved Tegan, she was funny and sometimes really really stupid, but i think that made her more likeable.

A crazy ride that drops you right in the centre of it on the first page, you will never get bored with this story, some great characters and a bit of a cliffhanger that makes you think that book 2 will probably be coming your way soon!

What an amazing title for a book. It certainly grabbed my attention, and contained within is a fast paced story involving secret government agents, underground warfare and a funny telekinetic protagonist that doesn’t take herself too seriously. It’s totally and utterly bonkers.

Teagan is a great character, and one I easily found likeable and approachable. She’s just your average woman with super powers, forced to work with the government when all she really wants to do is have a beer and watch tv. She’s sarcastic, witty with a good moral code at heart and completely believable. She’s never made out to be untouchable, like a lot of ‘super heroes’, with a touch of the morally ambiguous at times too. I liked that she wasn’t just a carbon copy of characters with powers that I’ve read about before, and she definitely elevated the novel for me. However, I did find the more romantic elements attached to Teagan to be rather contrived and unnecessary. She’s is a strong enough, and well developed enough, character to not need any romantic elements in the story to make her more interesting. It felt a little cliched, and awkward.

The story is fast paced, and full of action from beginning to end, leaving little time for the reader to get bored or loose interest. It also seems to start off as quite a straightforward one genre type book, but soon becomes much more interesting than that, going off on an entertaining tangent that is full of surprises. It’s utterly silly and fun, and it made me laugh. I will say that I found the two points of view that the story is told from rather at odds with one another at times. The mix of first and third person narrative fell a little flat and jarring and sometimes stilted the flow of the story, which was a shame. A single perspective would have worked much better.

I also found the ending to be a little rushed, and some elements are not described or concluded well. I dislike cliff hangers in books that so clearly rely on sequels to wrap up the storytelling, as I personally feel cheated out of a good ending. I felt that the story could easily have been concluded satisfactorily if the author had wanted it too, but instead opted for the draw of a sequel, which I found disappointing.

That said, this is an imaginative, completely off the wall novel that sits on the right side of hilarious and weird. Read for the light hearted fun and sassy protagonist.

I wasn't expecting to love this book as much as I did, but I'm so glad I did!

I wasn't sure what to expect at first, but everything about this story was so interesting. I mean, a group of people working for the government, like doesn't sound that exciting, but throw in some super powers, betrayal, romance and much more, and it becomes a story worth reading. I truly loved Teagan as a character and I cannot wait for more.

The thing is, though, that I felt that things wrapped up way to quickly and conveniently almost, and also, the ending kinda threw me off. It kind of felt weird when you think about how things were going up to that point and I don't feel a sequel was 100% necessary. But I'm still excited for the next one!
