This book initially took a bit of getting into as the constant time shifts and number of characters made it difficult to follow but I’m so glad I persevered. Great narrative and characters

Marital Disharmony…
Marital disharmony explored in this twisty suspense. Is Matt a ruthless killer or is he simply unlucky in love? A menacing little tale laced with dark humour and darker asides and with a swiftly moving plot. A quick and feisty read.

I felt as if this story was a little boring.
I also feel i knew what the next part was and nothing really felt like a mystery.

This book was not for me and I did not enjoy it as much as i would have wanted to.

One husband, two dead wives. Is he the reason they died, or was it really just bad luck that killed them? This sets the tone for an interesting read and recommended.

One man with two dead wives

We’re they murdered or just tragic accidents?

This book is cleverly written with lots of twists and turns along the way

Highly recommended

So many twists and turns in this one! I couldn't put it down. The twists were really clever - every time I thought I had it sussed, another one came. The writing style is engaging and makes you want to keep reading. My only gripe was the backstory between the detectives, which I often felt was taking away from the plot.

A husband is suspected of killing not only his first wife, but also his second. A cop is suspected of murdering his partner from years gone by. As Long As We Both Shall Live is the story of tumultuous marriages and partnerships that cultivates in two mysteries spanning some decades.

As Long As We Both Shall Live is by no means the worst mystery I’ve read, but it definitely wasn’t the best. At times I was quite bored, annoyed with some of the opinions the author expressed, and had to resist skim reading a lot of pages.

There was too much unneeded information that didn’t contribute to the overarching stories in any way. There were a good amount of portions of this book that read as social commentary rather than telling a story. There was a lot of opinionated commentary on unhappy and dysfunctional marriages, sexism and sexual harassment in the workplace and then how life treats men kinder than it treats women (“if you don’t have dong in between your legs, you’ve got a raw deal” gist).

In many ways, this did compliment the story, but it didn’t contribute to it in any great way. Instead, it felt like a way to bulk up the book and increase the page number total.

We’re quickly introduced to Matt, the husband at the center of this mystery, who is suspected of killing Janice (his first wife) and Marie (his second wife). As part of the ongoing investigations, we’re introduced to the investigators; Reid in 1995, and then Spengler and Loren in 2018.

These characters were so messed up, but I liked that they ultimately reinforced the idea that first impressions do not always ring true. For instance, I really didn’t like Loren at the beginning. But by the end, he was favourite character and I really felt for the guy. And I ended up rooting for Marie as well, which I honestly can’t explain.

I really liked the structure of this read and the alternating timelines. The first part of the story begins in 1995, when Matt and his first wife are having some marital issues. The second part of the story unfolds in 2018, where Matt is eventually suspected of killing his second wife. The alternating time period worked well in illustrating the characters more vividly, and definitely aided in building up to the big reveals and the book’s climax.

Alas, I did predict what was coming, but nevertheless enjoyed it. I was a little annoyed I was reading this story all the while knowing what was going to happen, but the author’s writing style kept me engaged, as did her characters. Also, I liked the way the book wrapped up, it was very consistent with the story as a whole, and was definitely satisfying as barmy as it was.

This is the type of book to read when you’re in the mood for lethal marriages and revenge of the spouses fiction. I would recommend this to anybody who’s looking for a mystery of that kind, and can be devoured within a day or two.

And if you’ve read this, liked it and want something of a similar kind, I’d recommend you look into My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing.

47% into this book and I'm still not into it. The story follows Matt Evans who is on a romantic break with his wife Marie. Whilst out hiking Marie fall from a cliff. Marie is however wife number 2. Wife no 1 has also died.

The actual premise is a book that I would love but there is a back story for one of the detectives which seems to be taking over the story. I want more of Matt Evans and what happened to his two wives. The book seems to keep going off on a tangent and is not sticking to the main story.

I'm disappointed that I am for the time being DNF this book but I'm bored with it. I do have it on my kindle so can pick it up again later on.

This is a thriller that really grabbed me in the opening chapters! It follows Matt whose first wife was died in suspicious circumstances of which Matt was cleared. Now in the present day he’s married to his second wife but she has a fall from a cliff on holiday and now a detective is on Matt’s tail. There were elements of this novel that I really enjoyed but ultimately it wasn’t very believable and the characters just weren’t fleshed out enough for me. I don’t mind unlikeable characters but they have to be real to me and they just weren’t. I did enjoy how twisty and fast-paced this novel was though so if you’re looking for a speedy thriller this might be the one for you.

I was given a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. As Long As We Both Shall Live begins with Matt phoning the police when his wife falls from a cliff. When the police begin to investigate they find Matt's first wifedied in a fire. I did enjoy the book although it was a bit slow though the first half of the book. There are some good twists, a good psychological thriller.

Matt and Marie have what can only be described as a toxic marriage and the plot revolves around the lengths both of them will go to, to start new lives. But this relationship is one that seems very reluctant to let go of the pair of them, inviting the two to individually and jointly plan and execute the most detailed and devious of scenarios. The pair will literally stop at nothing and it is very clear just how much hate they feel for one another. Or do they?
Loren and Spengler are the detectives who unravel what has happened in the past, with links to Loren's own conduct towards a previous partner in Homicide. There's fire, bullets shot, falls from a cliff face and a body in a forest. Just when you think all your questions have been answered and you know the ending, one person emerges as the victor. Who will it be?
I recommend this read to anyone who likes thrillers, as long as you don't have an aversion to American based police novels and don't mind the slang. I enjoyed the book and definitely would have picked this up to read as it ticks my boxes for what I usually look for but it isn't a book to rush out and buy, nor one that will leave any real imprint on your reading memory if you read a lot.

“As Long As We Both Shall Live” by JoAnn Chaney was a dark and addictive read. This is the first book I have read by this author and for me, it was brilliant and very difficult to put down. This was a well-written novel, the story was fantastically executed and the characters were well drawn and interesting.

If thrillers are your favoured genre or you enjoy reading about the trials of marriage then I recommend this book, for sure!

I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel at my own request from Pan Macmillan via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

"So here's the thing: if you want to kill your wife, don't. Don't kill her, don't touch her. Ditch the bitch if you have to, get on with your life."

Wow - with an opening like that what is not to love! As Long As We Both Shall Live by JoAnn Chaney was a fun, twisty, dark and addictive read for me that I read in a day. This is the first book I have read by this author and I had seen mixed reviews on this one but for me it was brilliant. Don't pick this up unless you have plenty of time on your hands because it is a tough one to put down - but you need to read this book!!!

Matt and Marie have been married for 20 plus years now and things are a bit stale for them.. Both daughters have now moved onto college, they have money and too much time on their hands. They decide to have a weekend away to Estes Park and go hiking. Disaster strikes when Marie's falls over a cliff taking a selfie and falls into the running river below. Matt calls the police who immediately begin the search for Marie's body. As Detectives Spengler and Loren investigate Matt becomes the prime suspect, believing that he pushed her over the edge. And then they discover that he was married before, and that wife also dies in suspicious circumstances.

Thanks to Pan MacMillan and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.

Read this if you are in the mood for a seriously twisted, totally warped and fiendishly crazy book about the marriage from hell!

"...that's how marriages were -- like a private room for two, where no one else could see inside."

Matt and Marie have been married for over 20 years and they've definitely had their ups and downs. Now wealthy with two college-aged daughters living away from home, they find themselves face to face, alone with each other and returning to some old habits. Current status: they both love -- and hate -- their spouse but what can be done since divorce is so expensive and out of the question. They've been working on their marriage for years, seen therapists, tried to make it together. So when the couple decides to go on a hiking trip to Estes Park they find some inspiration in the mountains. But! Tragedy strikes when Marie falls from a cliff into the roaring river beneath. Things go from bad to worse for Matt when he becomes the prime suspect as the police begin to think the fall was no accident. It seems that Matt has a history: his first wife died under some very suspicious circumstances. Detectives Spengler and Loren (a mismatched pairing if there ever was one) are investigating the death and come to some very surprising conclusions. NO SPOILERS.

What a fun book that is chock-full of some of the most unlikeable and outlandish characters ever! I found it almost laugh-out-loud funny at times, especially with the aside observations. I liked the style of the narrative as it switched between the characters and the use of the second person point of view was masterfully handled. I really enjoyed this one more than I expected, thinking I'd had it with twisty psychological thrillers that seemed just like all the others, and I had a great sigh of satisfaction at the ending. So, suspend your disbelief and go along for this rocky ride without thinking too much about tedious little details or tiny things like realism! And don't let it put you off from the idea of marriage LOL, it's doubtful you'll find a soulmate in each other as this couple did.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-book ARC to read and review. It kept me thoroughly entertained!

There were 2 stories running in this book. The primary story was about Matt who called the cops to report that his wife had accidentally fallen off the cliff. Had she? The rangers and police officers believed him until they found that his first wife had died in mysterious circumstances, (read burned to death), and the cops started their investigation with new eyes. Was the husband a killer? A body was found in the river running below the cliff. Who was she? The secondary story was about one of cops in the investigation and his past.

My first book by author JoAnn Chaney, the main story was so wicked that I couldn't believe what I was reading. The twists made me cackle evilly. I loved when the characters behaved in a most hateful manner. I didn't know whom to believe and didn't even know if they loved or hated each other. I learned from them hating each other was also a kind of love. At many points while reading, I heard sinister sounds around me and realized it was just me laughing. Whew!!

Give me evil characters who are determined to destroy each other, and I am in absolute thriller-y bliss. It is the ultimate book high for me. This book took me to such great heights. There were some absolutely delightful writing by the author which had me rubbing my hands with malicious glee.

My niggles were with the secondary story which was interweaved, it felt more like a filler and was not needed. It had nothing to do with the main story and it slowed the pace of the whole book.

A winding road of the plot filled with twists and steep turns where they was the cliff on the left and river on the right, where love was bullet spewed from a gun, knife into the gut, caved-in skull, deliberately pulled tooth, unholy flames burning a body. If your heart loves thrillers as much as I do and you want to know more, READ THE BOOK!!

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book as it seemed quite clean cut to begin with, Matt has killed his second wife after also killing his first, so what on earth was the book going to be about? There is no mystery so what could the plot possibly be?!

However, as we get into the book we realise all is not as it seems. I did not expect the first twist, when Matt goes to identify his wife's body, but after that came I guessed a few little bits as I got into the author's style.

Good narration as we get the perspectives of both Matt and Marie, as well as the police. Loren is interesting as he seemed so flawed, and his parallel story at first seemed irrelevant, but helped add depth to his character.

I'd definitely read more by this author.

Thanks to Netgalley, Pan Mcmillan and the author for the advanced review copy.
