My family keep telling me I'd love Mark Billingham's crime thrillers, so I really had to give this a go when it came up on NetGalley!

The story features police detectives Thorne and Tanner and is one of a much bigger series. I'd not read the others and this didn't matter too much - it works as a standalone apart from some references to an event previously that binds the two detectives and the police pathologist together.

In this book, a conman is taking advantage of wealthy women - not usually something in Thorne's caseload, but a related suicide means he wants to investigate further. Running alongside this police narrative is the conman's story as he realises that the latest woman he's in a relationship with is perhaps not what he was expecting...

I did enjoy this and read it quickly. It is quite twisty and clever, although I was waiting for a big revelation that didn't really come. I also thought that there were some threads left loose at the end which may be setting up another story, but felt a bit frustrating.

I'd recommend this to people who like their mysteries quite dark and surprising. It will keep you turning the pages and engaged throughout.

A woman throws herself in front of a train after being fleeced by charming conman Conrad. His next victim, single mum Sarah is also a con artist. Soon both begin a murderous campaign that you will not see coming. Another great installment in the popular DI Tom Thorne and DI Tanner series.

There’s no way I could do anything but gush about a Mark Billingham novel, just in case you’re in any doubt as to where this review is heading! Their Little Secret though, is great - brimming with terrific writing and twisty well-crafted plot that makes Mark Billingham a master of crime fiction.

The trinity of Thorne, Tanner and Hendricks is as compelling as always; though I do confess to being slightly worried about Thorne, he seemed a little...I’m tempted to say off-colour, but I’m not quite sure that’s what I mean. I guess all you need to take from that is I’m perhaps a little too invested in Tom Thorne’s well-being than is natural! It’s all the author’s fault anyway, he’s crafted characters that are as real as the person sitting next to us; each as realistic and individualistic as our friends and family, there’s never a moment that I think ‘Oh they’d never do/say that’ - it’s just totally on the ball, always. And, as always, it’s just like meeting up with old friends, you just pick up where you left off the last time you saw them.

Anyway, the plot; as I said it’s as terrific as always - even if it seemed that Thorne and Tanner were somehow a little on the back foot with this case - a suicide that for whatever reason, pricks up Thorne’s attention. I’m not going to witter on about it, because it’s there in the blurb and, like many hotly awaited things, there’s no point in me spoiling it for you. But it is enough to make you suspicious of any new parents on the playground that’s for sure. Besides there’s nothing more I need to stay, other than if you enjoy a thriller, no, if you enjoy reading, you’re not going to be disappointed.

As always the only downside to Their Little Secret is it inevitably has to end, and so then I have to wait for the next one - and however long it takes, it is always too long. You can probably guess that I urge you to grab a copy of the book, but I’ll say it again GO, BUY, READ, LOVE Their Little Secret.

When conman Conrad enters a cafe looking for his next victim, he meets Sarah, part of a group of school mums . But she has a secret of her own, and when the pair team up, the results are deadly. DI Tom Thorne is investigating the apparent suicide of a woman but soon finds himself drawn into something much bigger.

I enjoyed this story, very dark and creepy. However, being fairly new to Mark Billingham’s work, I did find myself at a disadvantage at the number of references to past events, especially, I’m guessing, the most recent story. Whilst all characters need history, to have mysteries mentioned so many times without details is a little annoying. I guess I’ll just have to read the other books to fill in the gaps!

Overall a good story, with some twists and turns along the way.

What can I say about the latest from Mr Billingham, other than I have read every single D I Thorne book and they never disappoint, this one being no exception.

This the sixteenth book to feature detective Tom Thorne and some authors of a long running series like this may see the series start to run out of ideas, not so for Mark Billingham. In 'Their Little Secret' Billingham gives the reader a roller coaster ride of a psychological thriller.

Like his previous book Billingham taps into a topical headline, that of people being conned out of money by very deceptive con artists. In this book it is Conrad, who makes a living out of deceiving others. Running parallel to his character is Sarah, who is quite possibly one of the most disturbing characters Billingham has created in his books. Needless to say Thorne and Tanner have their work cut out with these two.

One of his best books to date, a classic page turner.

Great storyline, quite unusual and certainly a fresh approach. Top marks for plot but stupidly what's going on between Thorn and Helen? I know he's emotionally stunted but this is getting tedious. To be fair I haven't read the book before (it's alluded to a lot) so perhaps that's my issue.

Another great book by Mark Billingham.
An intertwined story which is gripping and intriguing. Fantastic plot.

It was great to be reading a Tom Thorne novel again and to me, this was a fantastic book. Really enjoyed the story, kept me enthralled, didn't want to put the book down as I wanted to know the ending, great writing Mark.

Tom Thorne has been called to a suspected suicide at a train station but there is something off about it. He takes an interest in the case and tries to sell it as a case to his boss so he can keep investigating it.

Sarah is a single mum and hangs around the school gates with the other parents at drop off or pick up times. Sometimes the small group she talks to go for a coffee in a little coffee shop and she joins them after dropping her son off in the mornings, if there's room she will sit at the same table, if not an adjoining table with her laptop out so she seems busy. She wants to be part of the group but also, keep some of herself to herself.

Two separate stories to start but they soon entwine and that is all I am saying,

Been a while since I read Mark Billingham and I’m really not sure why because he never fails to deliver. In his latest, DI Thorne is haunted by a suicide and begins a personal investigation which reveals apparent links to the murder of a young man on Margate beach.

Billingham is skilled at police procedural with a cast of characters who come across as real people. And there is an excellent psychological thriller intercut with the police investigation as we follow a couple with a strange, complicated and unhealthy relationship. The writing is crisp and propels the story along; the dialogue is authentic, witty and sharp. This is the 16th in the Thorne series but can be read as a standalone with no issues. There are however enough references to events that have occurred in the five or six books that I have somehow managed to miss which, combined with a cast that I enjoy spending time with, make me want to jump back and catch up.

I haven’t read any of Mark Bellingham’s books before but I will be looking into the earlier ones of this series. The plot for the book was well done and got thicker and juicier as more plots emerged. Although I hadn’t read the previous book, I was able to understand the storyline that had continued and where it would potentially lead in the next instalment.

The two main characters were as awful as you think two people who do what they do in this book would be, but there’s always that slight nagging feeling that it really could be anyone you know. You really don’t know what goes on behind closed doors.

An enjoyable read,I’ll recommend.

Mark Billingham never disappoints! Another fast-paced, intelligent and gripping read. Highly recommended for all the fans and new readers.

Although this is the 16th book in the series, and I only read one other book previously, I had no problem at all to enjoy it.
Tom Thorne doesn't give up in this story where greed and betrayal causes people to suffer - but who is behind all this?
The story flows nicely and of course it is cleverly written with some surprises to keep the reader interested.

Thanks to Netgalley for this digital review copy.

As always a book by Mark Billingham is great to look forward to and this one doesn't disappoint. We meet Thorne, Tanner and Hendricks again with more than one crime to be solved.
Would definitely recommend and (no pressure, Mark) can't wait for the next one.

I thought I knew where this book was heading but I was wrong-footed quite early on. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. The main investigator, Tom Thorne, takes an interest in a suicide case which keeps nagging at him until it become a case for him to legitimately follow. There were a couple of convenient co-incidences towards the end, but nothing to spoil the enjoyment of the read.
Thanks to NetGalley and Little, Brown for providing me with a review copy.

I have read Mark Billingham's Thorne novels in the past and was excited to read his new book.
I love the relationships with his colleagues and friends - they are realistic and engaging - particularly Tanner and Hendricks. Their lives are real and you care what happens to all of them.
The story revolves around a folie a deux. and gets into the the minds and lives of the two main antagonists - you can feel understand how they got into this.
Michelle Littler is such a complex character and her relationship with Conrad is terrifying. Her lack of empathy comes through strongly at the end.
There is a big twist towards the end that I didn't see coming and it really added to the enjoyment of this book.
I can't wait until the new Thorne novel is published so that I can see where his relationship with Melita Perrara goes, if anywhere and how Nicola Tanner moves on with her life.

Their Little Secret is the first book I’ve read by Mark Billingham and this is book 16 in this series and although I do think this book can be read as a stand-alone, I did at times struggle as I didn’t feel I knew DI Tom Thorne well enough which had I read the others I would have done.
The book starts off well as your thrown straight into a suicide but is it murder, was she pushed? It soon becomes apparent that she has suffered from a conman and the plot thickens.
There were twisty and turns parts and then the parts that were from DI Tom Thorne’s point were at rimes boring, I know a lot of you are going to disagree with me but that’s how I felt. I wish I had read at least a couple of previous books as I did feel on the back foot at times, I also felt Sarah’s part was at times unbelievable especially around the school aspect.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Little Brown Book Group UK for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.

I love the Tom Thorne series, so was really excited to get a preview copy of this latest one. It certainly didn't disappoint! After a woman commits suicide, Tom discovers that she had recently been the victim of a con man, and vows to try and track him down. In the meantime, a woman called Sarah meets a man in a café and they start a relationship which quickly becomes out of control. Add in a couple of horrific murders, and you have the recipe for another page turning, well written story that will keep you on the edge of your seat to the end. It's great to become re acquainted with Thorne, Hendricks, Tanner and the rest! Hope we don't have to wait too long for the next one!

Thank you to Little Brown books and NetGalley for this advanced copy of the latest Tom Thorne novel. Mark Billingham just has this knack of drawing you into his books (literally by the scruff of the neck!!!!) and not letting you go until you have turned the last page of his books. This latest one is no different. An absolute page turner (with some humour thrown in for good measure!!) as you join Tom, Nicola and the rest whilst they hunting for a conman and woman following a series of events which starts with the suicide of a woman. I have no hesitation in recommending this book and whilst you are at check out the rest of the series.
