Billingham and DI Tom Thorne are in good form. Billingham crafts both characters and plot into a compelling story, handling extreme personalities adroitly and convincingly.

Tom Thorne is disturbed by a woman's suicide, it seems the woman had her life wrecked by a fraudster known to her as Patrick Jennings and this lead to her taking her own life. As it wasn’t a murder other cases take precedence but when Jennings’ DNA turns up at a murder scene in another area of the country Thorne is back on the hunt.
Working with Nicola Tanner Thorne tries to uncover how and why Jennings apparently went from conman to killer in such a short space of time. The evidence points to Jennings working with a female accomplice but it’s not clear who is the driving force behind the killing.
I have always loved the Thorne books and think he is a great character. I really like the addition of Tanner and Thorne’s ongoing relationship with Phil Hendricks.

I love Tom Thorne.
I really love Tom Thorne books.
I could just leave the review at that and be done with it really. Sometimes I find that if a character is rolled out over a length of time they can become repetitive or the writing can seem lazy ("Hey, I knows what sells right? Let me just churn out another bestseller")
Not so with Mark Billingham. Their Little Secret is a cracker of a novel that I was genuinely disappointed to finish. You know a book is good when you find yourself caring about the bad guy!

I’ve read all of Mark Biilingham’s books and have grown rather fond of Tom Thorne. He’s a copper who does what he thinks is right, which is often at odds with what his bosses want.

(For those who haven’t read the Thorne novels, there is some mention of events in previous books however this doesn’t spoil the enjoyment.)

This story begins with a suicide. A woman throws herself under a train because she was conned. Although this is not a murder, Thorne still feels the need to investigate. Those around him do not understand but go along with him. Consequently, they have DNA information that links to an actual murder.

The story is portrayed from the perspective of two characters and there are a good number of twists.

The activities of most the con-man had me wondering whether I would have been taken in. I think it says a lot about a book when you’re still pondering such questions days later.

I really enjoyed this thriller and, as a long-time reader of Billingham, I was intrigued that it didn’t start with a murder.
It was well written and very enjoyable. Even if you’ve not read the previous Thorne books, I implore you to read this as you won’t be disappointed and it’s not essential to know all of the back-story, and I also implore you to read all of the other Billingham novels.

Another clever mystery with the Thorn/Tanner axis investigating what begins as a fraud but descends into a dark tale of murder with as weird a perpetrator you can find. No obvious clues come to light and Thorns professional and personal doubts are cleverly intermingled while he waits for a stroke of luck. His trusty pal Phil provides some light relief with good humourous lines but the darkness is never far away in the latest instalment of this great series!

I have been a massive fan of the Tom Thorne series and couldn’t wait for his latest book and it certainly didn’t disappoint. This is a very complex case for Thorne to solve. It starts with what appears to be a suicide. A woman throws herself in front of a train. But Thorne decides it needs further investigation and finds information that she had been conned out of a lot of money by Patrick, her boyfriend. His DNA was found in her apartment but he had disappeared. We are then introduced to Sarah and Conrad, a conman who had chatted her up in a coffee shop and moved in with her a few weeks later. It soon becomes apparent that there relationship
Is very frightening and that she is a psychopath. Thorne is called out to the murder of a young man on a beach and DNA found at the scene appears to be that of Patrick. He then has to discover the connection between the two deaths. This is a very gripping and fast moving plot, so many twists and turns that keeps you wanting to read more. We also get reacquainted with Thorne’s team, nice to see familiar faces and his family who he is painfully estranged from. Another brilliant read from Mark Billingham. I can’t wait to catch up with Tom Thorne again!
Thanks to NetGalley and Little Brown for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.

Their little secret is actually book 16 featuring Detective Tom Thorne, if you've never read any of the other books it sort of works as a standalone novel but I think it would probably work better if you've followed it from the beginning of the series, that way you'll get to find out what makes Tom Thorne tick as there was a lot of implied back story.
I did like the book but I wouldn't say it was the best novel from Mark Billingham, There are some scenarios that really wouldn't of happened for as long as they do in the story.

I don't like to give anything away but the story starts with a suicide and not a homicide, which is the department Tom runs, but something makes Tom Thorne think there is more to the suicide than meets the eyes, so he pushes to investigate further, its a case that becomes bigger than anyone thought possible.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Haven’t read a book from this author in a long time. I’ll now be going back through them. Really interesting characters and an intriguing story. Had me hooked from the start.

I always enjoy the consistency of the Tom Thorne series and this one is no exception. Interesting to see Thorne back in the single life, and him and Tanner assessing life in the wake of their previous relationships. A solid and engaging plotline with a satisfying murder investigation, and lots of 'Phil' time too!

I do not normally get excited about a crime novel but there was something about the description of Their Little Secret that intrigued me. Oh boy was it good. Could you get any more twisted, warped and depraved then Sarah and Conrad. And yet their characters were so well drawn that left the reader wanting more much more.

The writer certainly knows how to draw his readers in to his world and I for one will be looking to read more of his novels.

I love Mark Billingham and thoroughly enjoyed this book. It grabbed me from the first page when Thorne is called out to investigate a suicide. He questions whether it is actually a suicide and the story develops into a series of murders connected to this. Sarah and Conrad are evil and yet at some level I could understand how they became the people they were. The story brought up some points which I felt were rather difficult to believe such as:
.Would people like Sarah and Conrad who have spent their lives “conning” others really trust each other so quickly?
Why did the mothers at the school gate not question that Sarah was never seen with her child?
Would Sarah actually be able to enter a school and hide in the toilets in this day and age?
I found the secret between Thorne, Tanner and Hendricks a little distracting as I have not read the previous book and did not understand what was being alluded to ( I will make sure that I do read it). However, I appreciate that other readers will know what happened. I liked the relationship between the three of them and found it totally believable - sometimes you like your friends, sometimes you don’t but you accept them for who they are.
I would recommend this book and would like to thank Netgalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read it.

Reading the next Tom Thorne novel is like catching up with old friends - not only do we follow a new case but we are brought up to date with Tom and Helen's relationship, the dynamics between Thorne and DI Tanner and the humour that comes with his interaction with Hendricks. I tried to read this book slowly to enjoy the update. As ever the book has a fast moving plot, many twists and turns, the characters are well drawn and the writing is as absorbing as ever. Tom Thorne is quite grumpy at the moment!
Many thanks to Netgalley/Mark Billingham/Little, Brown Book Group UK for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

I would expect nothing less than a fantastic read from such a talented author . As usual
The plot was exciting and believable police procedural with complex relationships thrown in . Fantastic .

Having read all of Mark Billingham's thrillers and having watched him discussing police procedure and high-profile criminal cases on television, it is easy to see why his crime fiction continues to go from strength to strength; it's realistic and believable. The sixteenth book in the Detective Tom Thorne series lives up to expectation although it isn't the best instalment so far. An apparent suicide catches the dynamic duo's attention when they have a feeling there is more to it than meets the eye. Action packed with a twisty-turny plot and touches of humour to lighten the tone, this is an exciting, fast-paced police procedural and will keep you turning the pages. Many thanks to Little, Brown for an ARC.

This story is really well written and full of action the whole way through. The plot is brilliant and the characters have been really well thought out. Mark Billingham is a brilliant author who always writes a really good thriller.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.

Another instalment in the Tom Thorne Detective series and lets be fair, they never let you down! Tom attends the scene of a suicide where a woman threw herself in front of a train, he can't seem to get away from the fact that all was not what it seemed, it was obvious she jumped but he just can't shake that feeling!!!

Thorn decides to do some digging and it turns out the woman, Phillipa Goodwin had been conned by a man called Patrick Jennings, so not only did she lose a lump sum but her life also as obviously couldn't live with the shame of it... Thorne makes it his mission to track down this Jennings.....

With plenty of action and more cases, Thorne has a big case load and has a lot going on or off (depending on your outlook!!!) in her personal life.

As always, a great read with plenty of twists and red herrings along the way, if you love a good twist police procedural read, then this series is for you.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Little Brown Book Group UK for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion

I always enjoy Mark Billingham books but this one left me slightly disappointed with Tom Thorne. The story revolves around two killers, Sarah and Conrad. Sarah is a teacher, so I found her behaviour just a bit unbelievable, and Conrad is a con man. The opening is a suicide, or what would appear to be but Thorne investigates further. A good plot, if a bit far fetched and plenty of action with touches of humour. The book was not the best in the series and the ending had a nice twist so fans will enjoy the read. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC. Reviewed on Goodreads, Amazon and Facebook.

Yet another brilliant book in the Tom Thorne series.
After Thorne is called to a suicide he can’t get it out of his head that someone was behind this.
Brigstocke does little to encourage him but he gets the team to gather evidence from her home.
Soon he is contacted by another Police force as there’s a match to some DNA found in the property.
Thorne and Tanner are then on a mission to find out how it all fits together.
A murder is committed and again there are links to the cases they’re looking into, so the race is on to find those responsible.
The killer is pretty disturbed with elements of their life based in a fantasy world, and we get a real insight into their mind.
This is a great read that will have you hooked throughout.
Thanks to Little Brown Book Group and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

The story starts with DI Tom Thorne investigating a suspicious suicide.

I don't want to give too much away but I can't review without minor spoilers, but we also meet a toxic couple, Sarah and Conrad, and the story is told from two points of view; the couple and the crimes they are committing, and DI Thorne trying his best to suss out what's happening and catch them.

Everything is weaved together very well and there were some great twists thrown in there for good measure. The characters were all great and you feel like you really know them because they're given a proper background.

This is the 16th book in the DI Thorne series but only the first I've read. It reads well as a standalone book but judging by this, I'll definitely be reading the others!

Rediscovering an author you have not read for a while is like rekindling a friendship with an old friend.

Another fantastic instalment from DI Tom Thorne, responding to reports of a suicide sound like a routine case for Tom, but it soon becomes clear that things aren’t quite as they seem.

A exciting and thrilling page turner, well written with great characters.
