the second book in a series which is even better than the first. Set in Leeds its gritty and hard hitting, it grabbed me from the first page and Ali kept the atmosphere throughout! The characters were so realistic I connected immediately.
Twists and turns all the way with the shocking moments making me feel like my heart was in my mouth! There is even a bit of humour running in the book!

WOW. Another great book by Ali, I was looking forward to reading this and I was not disappointed. It had be gripped from the start and I enjoyed the twists in the story.

3-4 stars. A well written story with some shocks, thrills, and chills, but a lack of that unputdownable component I love in books. I found myself pretty enthralled while reading, but found I didn’t reach for it as much as others nor had as hard or a time putting it down as I do my very favs. Overall, well written, and pretty thrilling so I do recommend to those who love the domestic drama thriller type books.
Will make sure I buzz it up to others!

The Runaway was a twisting, compelling, sick, and somehow still fun mystery. The two female private investigators are riveting, and the two parallel stories of missing people, weaving thru the story kept me interested. I am a person who believes in justice to my core and this book is a good book that brings sickness and crime to justice. I did not read Ali's first book in this "series", but this book was fine as a standalone in my opinion too, although now I want to go and read book one for some of the back history. This was a good book in my opinion.

There was a lot I enjoyed here. The setting is great, and the friendship between Lee and Jo absolutely convincing. Whilst not shying away from the realities of crime and assault, there's no unnecessarily lurid descriptions. Overall, the book had echoes of Val McDermid's early Kate Branigan books, which I always enjoyed. I didn't find the plot completely satisfying. There were too many threads, which meant none of them were explored properly. The deductions and solutions happened too easily, and the ending came out of nowhere. And I was left wondering how on earth the No Stone Unturned business made any money. Overall, an easy-going read.

Atmospheric, but laced with humour, I was gripped by this from the start. Loved the characters and couldn't wait to find out what would happen.

Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of the runaway by Ali Harper. While I did enjoy this book for the most part I also did find it a little bit boring at times. There was a lot of good mystery and surprises but some of the other parts were a bit slow And hard to get through. I still recommend though because overall it was good.

I think I would have benefited from reading book one in the series first as it took me a while to get into the partnership dynamic. A good solid book with good solid female reads. I have put book one on my TBR pile and I'll reread this one one I've read the first one to see if my opinion changes.

This was such an amazing read that I couldn’t put it down. It went everywhere with me. To the doctors office, the dentist, the eye doctor. IT WENT ABSOLUTELY EVERYWHERE. I was so sad when it ended that I immediately went and bought more books from this author!

In a lot of ways this book reminded me of the Kinsey Millhone series by Sue Grafton. At first it led me to believe that it was going to be quite a light read and I loved the banter between Jo, Lee and Aunt Edie. It wasn't long however before the story became a lot darker dealing with heinous crimes and putting the investigators at serious risk. This was the first book I have read in this series and it can be read as a stand alone story but I would have preferred to have read the preceding mystery The Disappeared first.

Book 2 in the series, I could still read it as a standalone. Lee and Jo ran a Missing Persons private investigation agency.

Entered Nikki wanting them to find her boyfriend Jack. A phone call from a retired reporter too got them a cold case, not of a missing person but to identify the body of an unknown woman who was found dead in the park seven years ago. The girls, sorry women, had two cases to solve, and one led to the other in due course.

My first book by Ali Harper, had me quite excited to read this story. I liked the camaraderie between the two main characters, and both knew how to look in the same direction which obviously came from years of friendship.

The plot had good number of twists to make the story read faster. It had the girls, sorry women, jumping through all kind of hoops. I liked how their brain worked to the point I wondered why the cops couldn't do the same. The two made it look easy. It was all about their intelligence and determination.

The pace was fast in most of its pages, but some sections meandered and I lost some of my interest, it took me 2 days to get through, the longest for a thriller. Some reactions felt a little off, especially of the serial killer.

Overall the writing kept me gripped to the story and it was a fun read.

Jo & Lee run a private investigation practice.Their first case is Nikki a young girl whose boyfriend has gone to a gig and not returned home. She needs to find him as she has found out she is pregnant. There are plenty of twists and turns before her boyfriend is found.
Their second case is a young girl who was found naked tied to a statue with only a necklace on. The police have put it down as suicide .But as they start to dig they unearth dark secret.
Great Book
Thanks NetGalley

The Runaway by Ali Harper is the second addition to the No Stone Unturned series featuring a detective agency run by private investigators and longtime friends, Lee and Jo. The novel works well as a standalone, but my own curiosity had me wishing that I had come to it with a little more background about the women's shared history, and how the agency had come into being.

When a naked woman is found dead, leaving behind only a necklace, police are quick to dismiss the incident as a suicide. But when another young woman approaches the agency to report that her boyfriend has mysteriously disappeared, the circumstances of the two cases become entangled for the private investigators. Is the missing man in any way connected to the body in Leeds?

This is a fast-paced read, and I very much enjoyed getting to know this fearless female duo, particularly Lee whose point of view informs the entire plot. I will definitely look forward to continuing with this series.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper Impulse and Killer Reads for this ARC.

The Runaway is the second in Ali Harper's No Stone Unturned Missing persons detective series and it's great. I loved The Disappeared (which was the first in the series), but The Runaway, in my humble opinion is even better and more so because it's based in Leeds and felt so immediate for me.

The main thing that draws me into these books is the characters. Harper has drawn two very different but equally likeable female protagonists. Told in the first person through Lee's point of view, Harper's writing style is almost conversational and because of this its so easy to whip through the book, which I did over two days. I love the insights we get into Lee's character. She is vulnerable yet, when it comes down to it she demonstares a bravery and tenacity beyond even her own expectations. Jo on the other hand appears a bit less vulnerable, a bit more savvy and as such the two compliment each other beautifully.

However, I was so chuffed to see Aunt Edith return in The Runaway. Such a brilliant character - well drawn, appealing and so delighfully humerous. Which brings me onto the second thing that really made the book for me ... the humour. It is so gently written in, but had me guffawing at intervals throughout and I think the humour is a really graceful way of balancing the dark subject matter of The Runaway.

So, with the backdrop of #MeToo and Epstein and .... the list is endless, The Runaway is a timely reminder of how far we still have to go to change attitudes. By weaving together two subplots, one historic and one current, Harper really gets to the heart of how celebrity can bring immunity and it is a current and thought provoking read.
My favourite scene has to be the Rave one in the countryside - Loved it. Loved seeing a different side to the two characters - Watch out for it - as well as being a key scene it's so full of life, fun and joy that I felt like I was in my twenties again.

This is a definite strong 5* read from me.
