Favourite Daughter by Kaira Rouda is an entertaining and intriguing story, narrated (unreliably or not?) by Jane.

A very twisty thriller that kept me hooked. Getting the narrative from Jane was a good touch as it left no opening for another perspective. That becomes significant by the end. Good twist at the end. Looking forward to reading more from the author!

Both this and Best Day Ever had a really fresh and current vibe that makes you feel like you’re reading something from an author who has found their perfect niche. I’m a huge fan of Rouda’s style and am so excited to (hopefully) see her continue writing in the same vein. 4/5 and a huge thumbs up.

What a fabulous book! Whilst I didn’t like any of the characters in the book, the dark and twisted plot quickly drew me in. The style of writing is very clever and highlights the main characters mental state. I will definitely read more from this author in future.

A story of lies and family secrets but I did figure out what the twist was going to be. I would still recommend this book as one worth reading though

A strong read about family ties, jealousy and family lives.

Highly enjoyable, the storyline developed and blossomed into something I couldn’t put down. Definitely recommended.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 sociopathic stars

I read this book based purely on recommendations so wasn’t sure what to expect but ended up really enjoying the book.

Jane is a great character; I think the book was a bit slow to get off the ground with the real character of Jane.

But once we started to see the real Jane the book got very interesting and very dark. I thought there was a good amount of twisted humour as well which I enjoyed.

The last third of the book was far better than the first, the pace picked up and the story had you going in different directions.

Recommended.

This is a story about control and narcissism. Overall it is a good read. Jane is totally unlikeable and tries to be manipulative the whole way through. I guessed early on what had happened to Mary. It did not spoil my enjoyment of the story.

Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.

Jane, the rich bitch mother has spent a year grieving the death of her daughter,Mary. She is in a fog of medication and drink, her husband is having an affair and her other daughter, Betsy, despises her but Jane is going all out to prove that Mary was killed by someone she knows.
My second book in a row that was such a let down. I hated Jane with a passion, everything about her annoyed me. The ending was predictable and the book bored me. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

Oh wow. When I first start a book, all I want are characters that I will like. I didn't like a single character in this book but I've still given it 5 stars.

Jane Harris is a self absorbed, delusional, manipulative narcissist and you just love to hate her. I love how the story is written, as though Jane is speaking to the reader. It's like you are inside her brain and you are brought along with each lie she tells and her true inner thoughts.

Jane is mother to Betsy and Mary, who has died after accidentally falling off a cliff, and wife to David. Betsy doesn't have a great relationship with her, David is cheating on her and she spies on them through apps and trackers. She makes it seem like everyone is against her, she's the victim. The pace is great and Jane is waiting for the culmination of events, the truth coming out (well, her version of the truth), so it makes you want to quickly read on to see what will happen.

Favourite Daughter was a read and a half in a good way, twisting and turning all the way through.
Jane is the main character and the book is read in her viewpoint making this quite a dark read at times.
Jane has been pooping various anti depressant pills since her first daughter died in a tragic accident, whilst she’s been doped up she has lost her way a bit with her over bearing manner. Her husband is having an affair...she’ll put a stop to that and her second daughter is in love with a teacher, yes she is eighteen but Jane’s not having that! Jane is full of anger, revenge and jealousy and is seriously sick in more than one way but what Kaira Ronda has done is make this woman truly awful with some of the stuff he does but because you think “no way has she done that” and she has, you actually love her as a character, and I stress as a character not someone I would want to be friends with although at the start I did feel sorry for her.
A great read that had me intrigued from start to finish although I did get what was going to happen about two thirds in it definitely didn’t spoil my enjoyment.
I would like to thank Netgalley and HQ for this ARC I received in exchange for an honest review.

I did enjoy this book but unfortunately had worked out the twist quite early on so this spoilt it for me. It’s a good story about family secrets and lies after the death of the perfect daughter and how the family unravels after the event.

Told from the perspective of Jane, a twisted and delusional Orange County housewife, this book is like going inside the mind of the epitome of a narcissist and sociopath. A delicious delight to read, but a toxic nightmare to those around her, I loved every second inside Jane’s mind. The author has written what I think is one of the most addictive thrillers of the year.

It’s been a year since Mary, the perfect daughter in the Harris family, fell to her death in a tragic accident. In that time her mother Jane has been unable to deal with her life and just trying to survive each day surrounded by the fog of grief that engulfs her. Her husband, David, and disappointing younger daughter, Betsy, are barely around and she feels abandoned. The only people that listen are her psychologist and the lyft driver who takes her to her errands and appointments. On the first anniversary of Mary’s death she receives an anonymous note that reads: MARY’S DEATH WAS NOT AN ACCIDENT. JUST ASK BETSY. Jane immediately believes her secretive daughter is hiding something, she’s just like her cheating father after all, and starts in motion of revenge for their betrayal and justice for the death of the favourite daughter.

Oh Jane. Controlling, manipulative, condescending, demanding and crazy Jane. She is one of the most unapologetically awful people I’ve ever read and, in a strange way, I adored her as much as I despised her. At the beginning she seems to be a sympathetic character: her daughter died, her husband is hardly home and is clearly cheating on her, and she’s isolated. But it doesn’t take long for her to show her true, ugly, colours. She has a justification for every action, lies without a second thought and takes joy in plotting revenge to ruin the lives of those she believes have betrayed her. Jane gets what she wants and will lie or take out anyone who gets in her way without a hint of remorse. She has a warped idea of what it means to be a good mother and if you google “how not to be a good mother” there is probably a list of everything Jane does. If there isn’t then there should be.

Favourite Daughter is a definite page-tuner and I couldn’t tear myself away once I began reading. I loved how the author had Jane talk directly to the reader, almost as if we’re friends. It was a great tool in showing the extent of her delusion and connecting us with her. Thought I saw a number of things coming it didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the book as how things were revealed to Jane and her reaction to them was fun to read. It is a testament to this author’s talent that she was able to create someone who encompasses such narcissistic and sociopathic traits but still manages to evoke sympathy from the reader. Ms Rouda has found herself a new fan that is going to buy her first book as soon as I finish writing this.

Thank you to NetGalley, HQ and Kaira Rouda for the chance to read this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Favourite Daughter is the follow-up to Best Day Ever and is one of the craziest books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. It's a very dark read about the facade people put on for the world to see, the reality behind it and the secrets that can tear a family apart. There are a few twists, but I guessed correctly the way it would conclude too easily and quickly for my satisfaction. Main character Jane is intensely unlikeable and appears to be a sociopath with narcissistic personality disorder. I am sadly familiar with NPD due to a family member having it and it really does make life hell for those who are frequently around that person, but it is well-researched and accurately portrayed here.

We get to see things from Jane's perspective which was intriguing, to say the least, and confirms that she is completely delusional turning her into the ultimate unreliable narrator in the process. There is even some humour interspersed throughout to lighten a deep, dark tale. It's the sign of a good author when they have you despising the characters as it is much more difficult to craft characters readers will hate than ones they will love. It's actually a rather wild and entertaining read and due to the unreliable narration and delusional state Jane is in, it will keep you guessing from beginning to end. You never know what is real and what is merely imagined. Very enjoyable, and I can see many people loving it. It's the perfect summer holiday read. Many thanks to HQ for an ARC.

I was really looking forward to to getting stuck into this book. I was so disappointed as I was sold after reading the blurb. The plot was weak, the narrative was annoying, why was the reader constantly asked questions? Surely a reader does this themselves good or bad and is part of the joy of reading.
I would like to thank the author, HQ and Netgalley for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
