I was hooked by the first few pages. A little boy from number 14 gingerly walked into the square with blood on his hands saying “help me”…….. Almost 20 years later, Leah and Jake were overjoyed at the cheap rent on the basement flat of number 14 and moved straight in.
The owner of the house, Anton has just returned from 19 years “away” and begins to befriend Leah who looks remarkably like his dead wife, he is drawn to her. Leah doesn't understand why the residents of the small community have shunned this old gentleman and allows herself to indulge her loneliness by passing the time with him. But when it's revealed by the community that he murdered his wife some years earlier Leah wishes she could un-share some of the secrets she told to him. The story unfolds in a slow, predictable and deliciously dark, sinister and eerie way, although there are twists and turns that you couldn’t predict.
It was a chilling read that gave me goose bumps and a shiver down my spine, this would make an amazing movie.

Thank you to Karen Perry, Penguin Roundhouse and Netgalley UK for my ARC for a fair and honest review.

I really enjoyed this book - it was a truly menacing and tense psychological thriller and the ending was unexpected. I did like Leah very much and really felt for her as she was drawn into Anton's trap and the involvement of the other characters was interesting and well written. Recommended.

Very dramatic opening and the tension was maintained throughout the story. Lots of twists and turns and a great conclusion.

An interesting read that delves in to the complicated relationships between neighbours. With this story there’s a love triangle, of sorts; murder, lies, and mystery aplenty.

Who killed Charlotte? Was it really her husband, Anton, or someone else? I mean, Anton was found guilty in a court of law so he must have done it, right? Well, that’s what everyone believes and he doesn’t exactly make them think any differently with the way he behaves, however much he professes his innocence. Can he prove it though?

Will Leah be able to keep her secret under wraps forever and live harmoniously with Jake? Will Hillary’s long lost love come back to her and fulfill her dream of a happy ever after? Will Greg one day gain his wife’s love and affections? All will be revealed.

I really think this book deserves to be a bestseller. Very much in the vein of Gone Girl, this is a thriller that will have you questioning every character, including the narrator. Can Anton be trusted? Is Leah naive? I loved the premise and the book lived up to it. A great gripping quick read.

It is around 20 years since Anton was convicted of his wife's murder despite hie pleas of innocence he has served his time. As he is released from prison Leah and Jake move into the basement flat of his home unaware of its history. In the Irish town that he lives again emotions are stirred on his return. The book reads easily enough but I would describe it as a unexciting narrative without the building of real thrill. I could feel myself sighing at the stupidity of the characters- as we learn more about each of them their own histories seem somewhat unbelievable and it is difficult to really fall into the storyline - "I kept wanting to say oh come on - really".

It was Ok but not the best read

Leah and Jake are so happy when they are offered a basement flat with cheap rent and start to get used to living together. They know Anton lives upstairs in the main house and eventually learn that he has just been released from serving 19 years in prison for killing his wife, Charlotte - in the house. Leah has her own secrets and finds herself drawn to Anton as he understands what she has been through.
They make friends with the neighbours Hilary and Greg but Hilary also has her secrets and she is biding her time until all can be revealed.

A fairly slow paced story that is told from the perspective of Anton, Leah and Hilary with flashbacks to when Charlotte was killed. The characters are mediocre and flat and although there are some twists - it does not take too long to work out who has done what.

Ooooohhh! This is creepy....but in a great way! Leah, Anton and Hilary all have a past. Secrets they don’t want to talk about, don’t want others to know. But when you live in such close proximity you get to know more about your neighbours than you ever wanted,to. So who is telling the truth? Anton? And his stay in the hotel? Or Leah? What is she not saying? Or Hilary? Why is she there?
This book will hold your attention from the start and will twist and turn in ways you never saw coming. Read it!

Two and a half star rating.
Jake and Leah can’t believe their luck when they are offered the basement flat of a large house in a smart area of Dublin. But then again they didn’t know the owner who has just returned there after a lengthy spell in prison. This book had a few creepy moments but it wasn’t the thriller I was expecting plus it wasn’t difficult to work out who was doing what, so the reveal didn’t leave me shocked at all. The main characters were a bit odd and hard to like. The cover was lovely and intriguing and I would definitely have picked it up from the bookshelf for a closer look.

A very clever suspense thriller that will have you changing your mind numerous times about what the truth behind the murder of 19 years ago really is. A slow burner but gripping nonetheless.

A really good summer read. Is Anyon innocent of murdering his wife? Should Leah trust him? Interesting take on relationships.

This was a great, gripping thriller. And a great, unpredictable whodunnit! I loved the atmosphere and the pacing also. If you like a suburban thriller - like Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine - you'll love this.

A great page turner, hard to put down, totally gripping and suspenseful.
A young couple Jake and Leah move into a basement apartment of a house in a very respected area. The property belongs to a colleague of Jake's, Mark, whose father has been away. Jake is an actor and is often away, he also has a seven year old child from a previous relationship whom he sees regularly.
It transpires that Anton, Mark's father has been in prison for 19 years for the murder of his wife and upon his release comes back to the house still maintaining his innocence.
A friendship slowly develops between Anton and Leah much to the displeasure of both Jake and a neighbour, Hilary.
Friendships, relationships, secrets, and love, this story covers it all. It is cleverly written with lots of twists. Did he or did'nt he?
