At first, I couldn’t put this book down. Nick goes missing one Saturday night. He walks out the house to get milk and doesn’t come back. The story starts then exploring the reasons why he wouldn’t come back, from having an affair to a secret in his past. There are lots of strands to the book and is written in past and present to try and unravel the mystery.
I thought the characters were well written. Cora was a horrible character and there were times I couldn’t believer she had just said what she did.
However I did feel it was quite drawn out and towards the end I started skipping bits just because I wanted it to get to the point. I had already guessed aspects of it but wanted to confirm my suspicions. Overall though, a well written thriller full of twists and turns

Based on reviews, I was so excited to read this as it sounded brilliant. Unfortunately, for me, it was a bit of a slog. I had worked out the background and the characters within the first few chapters, and it just wasn’t engrossing enough to keep me reading despite thinking I’d worked it out. By around 50% I was speed reading.

A real shame, as the premise sounded great, but this one just wasn’t for me.

This is nothing short of brilliant. I absolutely loved every minute of it. You are never certain what happened to Nick and why until you reach the last couple of chapters. The book twists and turns and leaves you wanting to just keep on reading. If you have a passing knowledge of 20th century Russian history you should be able to work out something very revealing about one of the characters before you get to it in the book at around half way. The lead female character, Grace, is always at risk of 'losing it' psychologically but I'm delighted to say this simply does not happen.
Don't miss this one

This book by Emma Curtis is full of suspense, twists and turns and would make a wonderful film. I loved it. It seems that all the adult characters are badly flawed and have something to hide. This book shows the worse of human nature. A real page turner and a must read.

I am a real lover of Emma Curtis and the books that she writes and she definitely doesn't let you down with this one.

A thriller that grows in tension as it progresses. Admittedly the story starts off slowly but stick with it because once the pace picks up it's full of twists and turns. Themes of betrayal and hiding secrets run through the story which keep you guessing as to which characters can be relied upon.

An enjoyable and exciting read!!

Brilliant book - it felt a real departure from the norm and I enjoyed it immensely. The story was believable with enough intrigue to keep you waiting to carry on - I really struggled to put this down.

I don't think I would have dealt with the mother in law in the same way and this was the part where I was shouting at the book, but otherwise a really well crafted story.

This was a fun read. Grace's fiance disappeared hours after proposing to her and that left her in a conundrum of confusion and fear. What had happened to him? And what was he hiding?

My first book by Emma Curtis showed me Nick's life in the present and the past. The events which led to the disappearance were laid bare as the pages turned. There were a lot of disturbing characters who seemed to have a hand in this. It took Grace strength and fortitude to get to the truth.

The first half was a bit slow as compared to what thrillers do. 2 timelines and many POV too kept me on my toes. There were not many twists, but the story itself was engaging to keep me engrossed in the mystery of Nick's disappearance.

Overall, a fun read.

.. Without giving anything away, Nick has just proposed to Grace. He goes for a walk and doesn’t return, This book was brilliant, with several twists and turns I really did not see coming. Gripping right from the start, highly recommend.

Wow, I couldn't stop reading this book and never wanted it to end. Drama, twists, and suspense you name it. It had it. I could connect to the characters which is a good sign for me. Lots of secrets in this one. It was very tense at some points. I cant wait to read more of emmas books.

The beginning of this book is very slow but the pace picks up. There are plenty of twists, secrets and betrayals.
The characters are easy to relate to but I wouldn’t trust them
I finished this book in one day
Well worth a read

I was looking forward to this book as it seemed to be right up my street, a domestic noir/mystery with plenty of twists. However, I found it fell a bit flat and I was quite disappointed. The story started off well and I didn't mind the timeline going back and forward and getting to know the characters, but it all just became too unbelievable. I know you have to suspend disbelief to a large extent when reading fiction, but I found that there were too many characters becoming directly involved in the storyline with the coincidences linking them just too far fetched.
I felt this was just an ok book, but there was too much going on which stretched credibility.

This was such a unique novel! The plot sounded bizarre, and it truly was, but definitely in a good way! There was just so much suspense, and the twists were truly surprising.

I can't say too much without potentially giving anything away, but all I will say is that I guarentee you will not see the end coming... or even the middle for that matter!

I must admit, it did take me a little bit to get into it, so if you're struggling a bit do definitely continue, as it is totally worth it in the end!

Nick has just proposed to Grace when he goes for a walk and disappears.
Grace thinks she knew him but as she seeks answers more and more is revealed about Nick. He has a scret. A tragedy which happened in his past. Was he to blame or were others to blame and what will happen when the past meets the future?

I hadn’t read any of the author’s previous work but the storyline intrigued me, rightfully so, it was a book that kept me reading.

Nick, Grace’s fiance disappears hours after proposing to her. He goes out for a walk on a Saturday evening and doesn’t return. It leaves Grace wondering if she isn’t the only one to be hiding something from her partner, especially as she uncovers something from his past and that he knew the new hot Mum at the school, who knew Nick in her childhood, surely not a coincidence, especially as she says Nick’s dad, Tim, took advantage of her sexually when she was a teenager and vulnerable after he sisters death. Nick’s boss also known to Anna is involved in someway too, but how and why?

Anna is very disturbed, filled with the guilt that she was ultimately responsible for her little sisters death years ago. Fuelled buy this guilt and the desire to get back some of her life that she has lost, she is seeking some form of payback from Tim and Nick. But is she responsible for Nick’s disappearance? Throw into the mix Grace’s ex and father of her daughter being his ever controlling self, it makes for a really engaging story. Later in part 3 Anna is also attacked, but by who? There are a few with more than motive or means to want to keep her quiet.

The first third of of the book took the longest, it was a little slow in setting the scene and the dual time line of present day and back in 2000 seemed quite disjointed and not connected really. However all comes clear near the end of part one. This then allows for a much more free flowing story. The story is told from the various character voices and the timeline jumps around a little so you have to be mindful of who and when each chapter is. You don’t get to know the characters too in-depth, however as there are so many leads in this story I don’t think this detracts in this instance. It is written well and does keep you engaged, the story is one that doesn’t lead you up a garden path, but equally it isn’t one that you can see where we are heading, so there is no need for any plot twists.

I really enjoyed this book it kept me enthralled to understand what did happen to Nick and why he went missing. I received this as a free copy from Net Galley and the publisher, in exchange for this honest review, so my thanks go to them. I give this 4.5/5 (rounded up to 5), it is close to an outright 5, but the first part of the book for me just didn’t read as well as the rest of the book.
