I just finished her previous novel so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one! This was just as well written, fast paced and non-stop action until the end. Can't wait for the next one!

A visit by an FBI agent to the funeral of her father, turns into an investigation into a serial killer. Non stop action and a great mystery thriller.

I really really enjoyed this book. It is up there with one of my favorite books of the year.

The story is told in two halves. I found that the first part of the story was more of a story telling the background and the second part of the novel was where all the suspense and action took place.

Some characters reminded me of characters i have seen in other books, but I still really enjoyed meeting them and coming across them in this book.

I did guess the ending, probably because I read so many of these books. However, it did not disappoint and was a great read.

Thank you for the opportunity to review and read this book.

GIRLS LIKE US is one of these novels that I pick up because I find the blurb intriguing and then it engrosses me so much that I don't put it down until I finish reading. It's a domestic thriller, fast-paced and full of suspense, keeping you always on the alert.

Nell Flynn is an FBI agent who had it rough in the last months. First she was injured during an arrest and now she is back in her childhood home, where she hasn't been for the last ten years, to attend to her father's funeral. She is supposed to organize her father's estate and then go back to Washington DC, but she finds herself involved in the murder of a young woman. This brutal homicide seems linked to another one her father was investigating before dying and it leads Nell to a ring of prostitution and human trafficking in the area. However, the more Nell investigates the more her father's involvement becomes suspicious. Did he have anything to do with the girls' murder? And did he really die in a motorcycle accident?

The novel really captivated me. There is the story of young prostitutes being killed which is dark and disturbing, but there is also the story of a woman and her complicated relationship with her father. Her flashbacks introduce us to an ex-marine, alcoholic, a bit abusive and, for the last ten years, Nell and her father have barely talked to each other. His possible involvement in the murders lead Nell to wonder about her mother's murder opening up the novel to more twists and suspense.

Nell is quite an interesting character. She is likable, super-smart, a brilliant FBI agent, she acts rough, but she also shows her emotion and her pain. She is haunted by her past and by her complicated relationship with her father, but she keeps always her head on the job.

As the novel ends with a few unanswered questions, I really hope it's going to be a series and that soon there is going to be another novel featuring Nell Flynn. If you are looking for a fresh and thrilling novel that keeps the tension always high, then GIRLS LIKE US is the right read for you.

This book was so good. I have never came across a story that is similar to an action film. I got so lost in it, I felt like I had been watching a film. The twists and turns from each person in the story kept me reading. The writing was beautifully wrote. When I thought I had an idea of how it would end, another twist came through. The characters were easy to follow and I would recommend this book to anyone.

Girls Like Us, Cristina Alger's second thriller and follow-up to the fantastic The Banker's Wife, is a compulsively readable and riveting tale. It follows FBI agent Nell Flynn as she returns to her Long Island residence after taking a leave of absence to deal with a cornucopia of personal issues; her life has rarely been an easy one. Now, when requested by childhood friend and homicide detective Lee Davis, once police partner to her father, she takes the position of consultant on a case very much resembling the very last case her father worked before his untimely passing. What she finds makes her question the man she thought she knew. Her father. But does it implicate him in something nefarious and sinister?

I would say this is a book more suited to those who enjoy character-driven stories as the amount of time given to Nell's private life and that given to the overall investigation equates to approximately the same. The first person narrative will appeal to a wide audience as it allows us to see things clearly and get into Nell's psyche to follow the story easily without switching perspectives. Be prepared for the slowish start to the story as the scene is set and we are introduced to the cast. I always appreciate when the author invests time and effort into this, and it's well done here. After that, the story takes off and the tension is slowly ratcheted up leading to the satisfying conclusion. Many thanks to Mulholland Books for an ARC.

Exhilarating, Atmospheric, and Apprehensive with Danger at Every Turn!

When homicide detective Martin Flynn is killed in a motorcycle accident, his daughter Nell (an FBI agent) reluctantly returns to Suffolk County. It's a place full of bad memories for Nell – her mother was murdered when she was a child, and since then her relationship with her father has been strained, and they've rarely spoken in the past ten years. While there, Nell is asked to assist with an investigation – a case her father was working on involving the murder of two young women. As Nell delves into the evidence she begins to suspect her father. And not only that, it makes her wonder whether he had something to do with her mother's death as well?

Gripping, tense, emotional and satisfying with an intense pace culminating in an adrenaline rush conclusion. Nell was a character who was easy to admire – she was intelligent, brave, generous, caring, had a highly developed sense of right and wrong, and would stop at nothing to get to the truth. Her recollection of memories effectively conveyed the close, protective bond she had with her mother, and the disintegration of the relationship with her father.

The amount of detail the author included to describe the landscape meant I was able to accurately visualise Nell's surroundings. In the process I also leant a lot about the geography of Long Island – didn't realise the Hamptons was surrounded by some less than desirable areas.

Girls Like Us was a fast read that had me frantically swiping the pages to see where it was leading. Christina Alger is a talented writer, and I look forward to reading The Banker's Wife.

I'd like to thank Netgalley, Hodder & Stoughton – Mulholland Books, and Christina Alger for the e-ARC

Really got on with this book and consequently read it pretty fast (schedule permitting). It's a very well constructed mystery/thriller set in a world I felt instantly a part of. Nell is a great character to be in the POV of. A sharp, smart and complex woman, who is flung into the deep end when she returns home to take care of her late father's estate.

Very much enjoyed taking the journey with her, solid twists, none of the usual forced romance tropes. All round winner for me!

FBI Agent Nell Flynn has not seen her father for ten years when she gets the news that's he's passed away in a motorbike accident. Her mother had been brutally murdered when she was just seven years old. She returns to Suffock County, Long Island to scatter his ashes and sell his house. While she is there, she is asked by her fathers partner, Lee Davis for help investigating the murders of two Latina women. The case is similar to another cold case her father had been working on. It's not long before Nell suspects that her father knew a lot more and could even have been involved more than he should have.

The pace is fast and the storyline gripping. The story is told from Nell's point of view. The book is well written with well rounded characters who were true to life, complex with some dark secrets. The tension builds throughput. I liked the authors style in writing. It's full of twists and surprises. My first book by the author but it won't be my last.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Hodder & Stoughton and the author Christina Alger for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Well worth the read, don’t miss. I enjoyed this book and the story is well written and gripping. After her homicide detective father’s death FBI agent Nell Flynn helps his partner investigate the case they were investigating. Two murdered girls. But we’re her father’s friends covering for him? Should he have been investigated for it?

I would like to thank Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for an advance copy copy of Girls Like Us, a stand alone set in Sussex County, Long Island.

FBI agent Nell Flynn is back on Long Island after an absence of ten years to bury her father and wind up his estate. While she is there the body of a young woman is found buried in the sand. Her school friend, Lee Davis, who is now a Sussex County homicide detective and her father’s partner asks her to consult on the case because the manner of death is almost identical to another murder from the year before, a case that was her father’s last before his death. Nell soon realises that she knows little about her father and as she starts to investigate what she uncover makes her wonder if he was involved.

I thoroughly enjoyed Girls Like Us, mostly due to Nell’s compelling first person narrative which held my attention throughout. The plot itself is fairly average and I had a good idea of where it was going right from the start although a couple of twists at the end caught me out, mostly, I think, because the other characters are rather stereotypical so it was easy to pick them out and because some of the scenario is based on a real case that I am familiar with from watching true crime documentaries.

It is a novel of two halves with a slower first half which sets the scene as she investigates her father’s recent activities and covers her backstory. The second half pulls it all together and is a tenser, more action packed read. Nell’s voice guides the reader throughout. The novel may not be for everyone as it takes a close look at her character, warts and all, and her history at the expense, in the first half, of a strong investigation and even, in the second half, the crime conclusion seems rushed and slightly perfunctory, although probably realistic, in favour of her personal odyssey. Personally I found it fascinating, compulsive and very well done. I’d love to spend more time with Nell.

Girls Like Us is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

When Nell Flynn goes back to Suffolk County for her father's funeral she ends up helping to solve the last murder case that he was involved in.

She then begins to question whether he was in fact the culprit.

Full of suspense, I really enjoyed this book.

A smooth read as it is well written, with some twists some of which can be seen 'a mile off'. However, the main character, Nell Flynn an FBI agent, is so well drawn she had my support from page 1.

She has returned to her home town in Suffolk County USA, to try and tie up her late father's estate. Then it turns out that he is a prime suspect in a couple of murders, and may have been killed unlawfully.

Nell digs deeper to find other challenges, and at this stage I am not going to spoil the story any further. Suffice it to say that Nell is gutsy but vulnerable, and tries to solve the cases without having access to loads of money and unlimited FBI sources.

I did not realise that the author had written other books, and I am looking forward to these!

I loved this. It was such a gripping book and I finished it at breakneck speed. It's a really intense, atmospheric read with a brilliant lead character. The story has twists and turns and like the main lead you don't know who to trust or what to believe. I thoroughly enjoyed this and hope there is more to come.
