Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

A good premise, however, I am a little disappointed because I thought it was going to be a book where the 2 main characters were twins, something I haven't seen in quite a while in a fantasy book.

My thanks to Little Brown Book Group U.K. Piatkus for a digital edition via NetGalley of Maria Lewis’ ‘The Witch Who Courted Death’ in exchange for an honest review.

This was a superb urban fantasy and I became an instant fan of its author and immediately added her earlier books to my wish list.

I will not say anything about the plot as I feel it’s one best to read ‘cold’ without preconceptions or spoilers.

Its main character, Corvossier (Casper) von Klitzing, is not a witch but is a powerful gifted medium who interacts with the dead. She lives in the Bierpinsel, a building that secretly houses Germany’s supernatural bureaucracy. Later in the story Casper travels to Boscastle, Cornwall where The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic features prominently in the story. There be witches.

Lewis’ world building is excellent with a wide range of supernatural creatures. She confidently combines supernatural fantasy horror and action with wry humour. It’s quite dark yet smart and sassy with plenty of pop culture references sprinkled throughout. Casper has totally won my heart.

I loved it. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this. It was a fun, fast and thread. Great world building and wonderfully written characters. A lit slow to start but definitely worth the perseverance to get into it properly. A bit darker than a lot of urban fantasy but the humour balances this out and it’s a great read.

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion

I request this book by mistake as I already read it :(
I can only repeat what I already wrote: This is a fast paced, funny, well written and engaging urban fantasy.
I'm happy I requested it because I discovered a new to me interesting series and a good author.
I loved the characters, the world building and the fast paced plot.
it's a page turner I couldn't read fast enough.
I look forward to reading other installment in this series.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

Caspar and Creeper, not particularly positive nicknames given to the world’s best mediums. They’re carrying out what they see as everyday activity, when an unprovoked attack occurs and things are changed forever.
Having to adjust to life without her brother in a physical sense, Caspar is determined to seek revenge. She’s heard strange tales of who was responsible for the attack in which she lost an arm, and is determined to make them pay.
We follow Caspar to Cornwall as she searches for a witch who survived a similar attack. There’s something odd going on, and it focuses on some supernatural behaviour.
The pacing of this felt slow initially. The story itself was entertaining, and it built to an exciting end. However, there were key background details that I felt were lacking, and there were a number of characters/moments that I felt were preparing us for another story.
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me the chance to try something different.

I enjoyed this book quite a lot. The setting was ver well done, and it was very imaginative. I liked the writing with some humour injected in it. The story was interesting, I enjoyed reading about these characters.
All in all, really enjoyable urban fantasy. Recommended.

I was intrigued by the description for this book and was looking forward to diving into a world full of witches. The first thing that struck me was the character names which were awkward to pronounce, but I moved past that as the story began to unfold. The two main characters, twins, Casper and Creepy (their nicknames), were well developed and I loved their strong bond. The action at the beginning of the book was excellent too. I don't know what happened because the story seemed to come to a stop when Casper went to Cornwall in search of a witch. The plot seemed to stop here and things dragged. I missed the action from the first half of the book and nothing was really happening. In fact, I would so far as to say, I wasn't looking forward to reading anymore and I didn't really care what happened. Casper brother seemed to vanish and the focus was more on a romantic relationship. I was hooked on the need for revenge in the early chapters. I loved Casper's interaction with the ghosts and her brother, but I found myself becoming bored from the 50% mark.

What could have been a great story got lost in need to introduce an unnecessary romance. Overall, this book just wasn't for me. I loved the first third but it fell short after that.

I really enjoyed this, it was quite different from the urban fantasies I have read recently, it was quite dark, but still had some humour. The story was good and I loved the main characters, and the setting.Nothing to not like, I thought the author had a great imagination, and I can't wait to read more of their books. Thanks to the publishers and netgalley for this ARC.

This is an note resting story that I wanted to read because of the title. I love witches and when I found out this was also an urban fantasy set in Europe, I had to read it!
Our main character is Casper who is the worlds post powerful medium. She is strong, composed, caring and also driven by revenge which I enjoyed. She wants revenge for the death of her twin brother who was targeted by a group of bad guys.
The worldbuilding was good as there were a number of different beings and there was a social hierarchy. The author clearly has a lot of supernatural knowledge. I liked that it was set in Europe. I found the powers Casper had were fascinating and I won't lie, I love a revenge plot. I also really like when the character has to do some detective work!
However there were a few things that I disliked. The pacing seemed to really slow down which I found a little strange. Also I wasn't a fan of the romance because it felt like it became the focus of the story and not just a detail. I'm not a fan of romance in general though.
