A good thriller with a twist I didn’t quite see coming!

Karen is a marriage councillor who takes on the case of Josh and Lydia Green. What seems like just an average couple looking to save their marriage quickly turns into something far more sinister. As the sessions progress Karen starts to feel uneasy about the couple. There’s something about them that reminds her of events from her past, a past she has tried hard to forget.

Initially I had a hard time getting into this novel. It was a lot of back and forth, session after session. But once I started to realize there was much more going on I had a hard time putting it down. Even when I thought I’d had it figured out, the twist was something I didn’t quite see coming!

I feel like this book gave away the premise and key plot points too early. I didn’t find it suspenseful enough to be a thriller. I did enjoy the writing style itself and the flow as it was easy and engaging to read.

Long chapters! But this was a good read. Keeps you guessing. Domestic thrillers are my favorite. Good plot. Good characters

Really enjoyed the different voices taking alternate chapters, it added to the confusion and tension of the tale building. So clever and thoroughly gripping!

I flew through this book! What a fun read. I love psychological thrillers and was immediately drawn in by the fresh feeling of the therapist’s point of view. The choice to use the therapy sessions as a framework for chapters provided a steady pace of balance information and anticipation. I never knew exactly what was going on in The Divorce and I enjoyed that very much. The therapist angle, the multiple points of view, and the meandering but somehow hypnotic pace of this novel all worked together so effortlessly.

I didn’t see the end coming to this book and, while I personally felt that it could have turned up the drama even more once we got there, this was great for a first debut into psychological thrillers for Jenkins. I enjoyed this book a lot and will definitely be looking for more like this from this author.

I found this book to be interesting and it kept me guessing. I didn’t put two and two together at first. The writing was good. Thank you to netgalley for the ARC.

Having read some of Victoria Jenkins’ previous detective novels I was looking forward to reading her first psychological thriller. While the premise of a therapist telling the story of a client couple is interesting the first half was an extremely slow buildup plodding along before anything is revealed. Jenkins writing is always good but I wish the plot and the ending matched her skills. I’m glad I read it but was left wanting more.

The story starts with Karen, a marriage counsellor, who takes in a couple - Josh and Lydia, who are on the verge of separating, as her new clients. They seem to go around in circles every time they discuss their problems. But helping them sort out their problems is what Karen does best. Once their sessions start Karen begins to notice certain tell-tale signs of abuse and wants to help Lydia the best she can except she begins receiving threatening emails and is worried for her own safety. There is something about the couple that makes her feel odd and she isn't sure if she really wants to continue helping them. But mostly she is reminded of a similar past case, the one that still haunts her.

This is a very slow burning book. I didn't really get into it, but for some reason I couldnt stop reading! I dont know what it was. I feel a lot more could have been added, e.g. more events leading to the reveal etc rather than just talking and describing.

Excellent psychological thriller by Victoria Jenkins with a superb twist at the end to shock the reader.
Well written novel with great characters, captivating prose, excellent storyline and an absolutely thrilling finish.
Highly recommended.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for ARC in exchange of honest review.

I did not enjoy this book. It was slow and boring for me and also not the kind of mysteries I like
Karen is the marriage counselor and she takes on the case of Lydia and Josh who are going through some issues in their marriage. They go through some counselling sessions until Karen find out some more details about the couple.

The end was kind of open to interpret.

I skipped pages to finish the book.

Thank you to the publishers for letting me read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The Pros:
This book had a slow build to it, which was enjoyable. It kept me interested enough to turn the page to see what happens next, the storyline was great!

The Cons:
It was one of those novels where you know what's going to happen before it's even told. The ending could have been much better as well, it didn't leave me with the closure of what happens to one of the characters (spoiler-free review here), unless that was intentional for a sequel, which would be a great arc to leave it at.

A family drama-thriller if there ever was one, The Divorce will have you contained until the very last page. The writing and story, both beautifully wound together, captivated me and wouldn't let me go. This is sure to be a hit with those who love domestic thrillers.

The last 35% of the book made up for the slower start of the plot. The chapters were told from alternating characters that provided different prospectives kept the plot moving. Towards the end, the pieces all started coming together, the plot twisted in ways I didn't see coming or could have expected. Overall a good read.

I have to agree with most of the reviews on here - the divorce just didn’t grip me as much as I expected.
Set solely in the therapists office - it is a very slow burner.
Lucy and josh are not very pleasant - and although josh appears controlling and abusing, it isn’t too long before Lucy starts showing her true colours.
Good twist at the end, but it didn’t make up for the long drawn out rest of the book.

My deep appreciation goes to Netgalley and Bookouture for a chance to read this title before it publishes. Lydia and Josh go to marriage therapist, Karen, to try and save their marriage. Josh appears to be controlling and maybe even abusive. Yet sometimes Lydia does an about face when she’s talking that seems strange. Two things bothered me about this book. 1. The author set it up so every scene was in the therapist’s office. An author who does that has set themself up for a huge challenge in keeping the interest of the reader high. That leads to number 2. Too many boring passages with just talking and reflecting and no action. That’s why I rated this book three stars.

I didn’t predict the ending and it was unexpected. But that wasn’t enough to keep me engaged throughout the story.

Some reviewers thought it was a compelling, short read. I wasn’t one of them so read at your own risk.

I recommend this book. It is told in alternating chapters by the three characters which works well to build the tension that this book offers. This book is unique in some respects in that there are very few characters in the book, which I liked as all the focus and investment is on the ones that there are. the story unfolds gradually during the therapy sessions with all the characters gradually exposing more and more about themselves until the ending. Perhaps not quite a 'twist' but certainly eventful and satisfactory.

The Divorce is a unique and with ugly characters. The book moves at a snails pace, but if you can stick with the pace the book is still a decent read.

3.5 stars .

For me , started slowly but builds in tension as the story progresses. The characters were ok although I didn’t take to Josh at all.
I for one didn’t see the twist coming at the end.
Overall an enjoyable read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy.
