I wanted to like this book a lot more than I did, though I appreciate the free copy I received I didn't enjoy the writing style and found the characters shallow. Just not for me.

Kittiwake, an imposing Cornish house by the sea, is the beautiful setting for this compelling story. The reader is taken back and forth in time and we learn of a tragedy that sets off a sequence of events for the family.
The 50th birthday party of Lance, being held at Kittiwake (his inherited home), is where everything reaches its conclusion in this book about consequences. I enjoyed the the story, the descriptions and the character portrayal. However, unfortunately I struggled to warm to any of the characters, and was disappointed with the ending. Thank you to Jenny Eclair, Net Galley and Sphere Publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I thought this book mainly set in Cornwall was a really good read that was well written with great character. The scenes were very believable and characters well rounded. Jenny Eclair is a great writer and although this isn't a comedy it has some good comedy sketches in it.
The theme of not belonging and not fitting in it runs throughout with Bel being the adopted daughter of a rich family. She never feels wanted or part of the family. We see her as an adult downtrodden and with her own family taking her for granted. When she invited to a party at the old family home in Cornwall were she was born things take a darker turn.
I really like the authors novels and this one is due out in paperback in a couple of months I would recommend.

This was such a good book, so different to a lot of books I have read recently. Jenny Eclair has written lots of books but, this is the first that I have read but, it won’t be the last. It was well written and funny at times. I could hear her voice as I was reading it. It was such a good book that I read it very quickly as I wanted to find out what was going to happen.
If you want a different kind of book to read this could be your sort of book.
My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

A very readable book, though some of the story threads were a bit of a stretch. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover Jenny Eclair as an author and must look for others of hers.

Another wonderful read from Jenny Eclair. A family saga with elements of sadness and humour and subtleties that Jenny Eclair is so good at weaving in.
I wanted to take my time reading this as it was so enjoyable.
The main thread is the preparations for Bel's brother Lance's 50th birthday party being held at the family estate of Kittiwake.
We learn about Bel's relationships with her mother, Natasha, brother and her ancestors.
The men don't get a great press in this book as a whole and if I'm honest the end was slightly confusing - was it supposed to be a Sliding Doors scenario I wonder? Still a great read though.

I love jenny Eclair and while this wasn't her best novel, I enjoyed reading it and thought the past and present were woven together seamlessly. This is a tough job for a writer and I think she did awesome work! I will continue to read all of Jenny Eclair's books no matter what.

I enjoyed “Moving” by Jenny Eclair so I was thrilled to read her new book - “Inheritance” - through @netgalley and @littlebrownbooks. I picked up a library copy after release to take my photo!

People sometimes refer to a book having a strong sense of place. I think this book has a strong sense of its era, and the associated paraphernalia of that time. In this case we’re talking about the time of my childhood and teens, the 70’s and 80’s. The Independent describes Inheritance as being “keenly observed”. It certainly wound my memory right back with details that mirrored my childhood home from rose patterned placemats and napkins in silver rings to the Ercol furniture (which I still have and has now become “vintage”!) and spider plants in wicker basket stands!

The story is a family saga - of sorts - with dark dysfunctional family secrets - an abandoned baby in a drawer, secret adoption, a child drowning, domestic abuse (not the main theme but it IS there). There’s an array of characters you’ll believe in and care about. Bel was my favourite and her wit and humour and stoicism in her personal life made me chuckle.

Across the generations the story centres around Kittiwake, the Cornwall family home. Bel is invited to a family birthday gathering at the old house and she hasn’t returned for many years. Her mother is also going to be there, as well as her brother and her own (man) children!
The party at Kittiwake triggers the denouement.

This is a satisfying read with plenty of wit, humour and sadness to make for laughter and tears. I kept turning all the way to the end and consumed it in two days.

I loved all of Jenny’s previous books and always made a beeline for them but this one isn’t a patch on the others. Waiting and hoping to get into it, but sadly never did and it was a real struggle to get through it. There were some comical paragraphs here and there and some of the characters were funny, but I don’t think they were meant to be! Cornish house on a cliff (where else), various people who lived in it, what’s not to like? In theory nothing, but I just didn’t feel anything for it or the characters.

Another cracking read by Jenny Eclair. A cast of wonderful characters to love and hate, with all the wit and comedy you'd expect, tempered by sadness and poignancy. The main focus is Cornish mansion 'Kittiwake' bought by an American heiress 70 years ago, left to rot and brought to life again by her grandson and his Norwegian wife. Through the walls of the house, the story of heiress Peggy, her children and grandchildren is revealed, culminating in the 50th birthday party of Lance and his adoptive sister Bel. It's a story of family rivalries, secrets and jealousies. Loved it!

Inheritance is the first book I have read by this author. I must say that it has inspired me to read Jenny Eclair’s previous novels. I enjoy her style of writing, the observational humour and eye for detail, really comes across, even in a serious novel.

The story revolves around a Cornish house called Kittiwake. Over the years the house has been reinvented by a succession of owners. Now in the present day, it is has been fully renovated and is about to become the venue for a lavish birthday party.

The story goes back decades and generations but Kittiwake is always the central location. The house has seen tragedy and turmoil, change and restoration, but it doesn’t hold the wonderful memories you would expect from a seaside retreat. There are different generations, many characters and a timeline stretching over seventy years, so the family tree at the start of the book, was really useful. I soon became familiar with the people in the book and found the switches in era added many layers to the plot.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable read from a talented writer and recommended for anyone who loves family dramas with an intertwined backstory.

I really loved Moving when I read it a couple of years ago so I was quite excited to get my hands on this book. I am not the biggest fan of books that flit about in time as I tend to get confused easily (a "me" thing, I have concentration issues) but I never got lost whilst reading this book as the past is injected in exactly the right places to add colour and background to what is occurring in the present. We first meet the cast as Lance celebrates his 50th birthday with a lavish party at his big house in Cornwall. A house, and indeed a family, that all hold secrets and more than their fair share of history. I can't really say much about the story as it all interweaves around and about itself but I will just say that it is all incredibly well plotted and played out with aplomb by some very well crafted characters who all develop nicely as the book progresses. Obviously some are easier to like than others but all were easy to connect to in some way, good or bad.
It's quite an emotional book, very sad in places, but there are enough lighter moments to keep the book balance overall. This is aided by the author's brilliant writing style which well fits this genre of book; flitting between in your face and more gentle as appropriate.
All in all, a cracking read that I thoroughly enjoyed. My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.

I really enjoy stories that switch between eras, grand old houses and family mysteries so this grabbed me right from the start.

We first meet Bel when she is hit on the head at her brothers 50th birthday. He lives in Kittiwake, the family home, in Cornwall. The location brings memories to the surface and the family secrets are laid bare one by one.

Bel is the adopted daughter of Natasha whose own mother Peggy abandoned her as a girl, leaving her with an alcoholic father after the death of Ivor, Natasha’s older brother.

A story unfolds that tells how Bel came to be found and adopted but as the final revelations are made it feels as if only half of the story is told and I felt very disappointed by the ending, it felt rushed and false. I had so enjoyed the story and was bracing myself for the big finale but it did not live up to my expectations.

The writing throughout was brilliant and the narrative was acutely observed, I would read more by the same author but I do feel that she rather let Bel down.
