It took me a while to get into this, but over time the characters drew me into their world. I liked how the differing lifestyles were portrayed. But it was the main character, Hope, who drove the story, prepared to do whatever was necessary for her family. An enjoyable read and a series I’d be interested in following.

I struggled with this at the beginning but stuck with it and really grew to like all the characters and setting. I found the story to be fast paced and well written. I particurarly liked the protagonist - even in the times when it is a man's world, she was able to fight for the truth and what was right. To be honest, I always prefer a badass heroine. It was the first book I came across from the author, but hopefully not the last.

This book takes place in 1899 London. It chronicles the life of a 20 year old girl who discovers, following a fire, that life is not what she thought it was. Was the fire intentional? Did she really know her parents? What should she expect from life, and life from her?

It was interesting and entertaining, but meandered a bit, and left a loose thread, that I wish was pulled.

A story set in London’s East End, a typical pub that is family owned. Hope has a father who is a gambler and drinker, a Mom that supports her youngest daughter Violet in her dreams to become an actress, and an older brother John who can’t wait to get out of the pub and have a place of his own. Also there is a little brother who is bullied at school. Hope, an aptly named main character, is the mainstay of the family. Tragedy triggers the family’s devastating loss of everything. Hope desperately tries to hold the family together. A quick, but not a memorable read for me. The writing was very good and I had no problem finishing the story. I give it 3.1/2 stars.

This book was easy to read and I enjoyed reading it. I felt sorry for Hope but she was strong for her family. It is emotional but I do recommend it to be read.

I struggled with this at the beginning but stuck with it and really grew to like all the characters and setting. It accurately depicted several economic levels of turn-of-the-century London England although perhaps unrealistically had characters rising above their levels. This historical novel was slightly of a romantic bend but not overly so. I enjoyed it enough to look for other novels by this author. I hope these characters show up in another novel. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book. I thought I would give it 3 stars because it was good but just an average book. . As I continued to read it I liked it enough to give it 4 stars because the last third of the book was very good. The storyline was very good with a surprising ending. I liked it also because there was no swearing or sexual content.

Quick pace easier read full of emotions. It's a semi-fast read two days for me. A lot of emotions. Good for a beach read or weekend read.

The Daniel's family have run the pub, the Hope and Anchor for many years. Mom does the cooking, dad runs the business, keeps the books and does the banking. Hope does the shopping, helps serve and also helps mom in the kitchen. John her brother helps their father serve the drinks. Violet doesn't he at the pub, she spends her time at the theater. Little eight year old Alfie goes to achool.
When money starts going missing and the Bill's aren't being paid, Mrs. Daniel's discovers her husband is gambling and using their hard earned cash to pay his losses. The losses get so bad he has made a deal with the proprietor, Silas Quirk of the Grenadier. He will let Hope work as a hostess for one year for no pay, just her tips.
Hope is not happy about this arrangement, but she will honor the deal. The family go through many hardships and traumas. This will only make them a stronger family. Throughout, Hope is the stalwart young lady she has been raised to be. Hopefully she will be able to make a life of her own.
A story of family, love, loyalty and trust.
Well written and a great read.

I love everything about this book! The characters were exactly like
a family would be. Some that are selfish and have some hard lessons
to learn. I really liked, Hope! Even in the times when it is a man's world,
she was able to fight for the truth and what was right.
This story really took me back! I think it is one I could see myself
reading again someday.

Thank you so much to the writer, the publisher, and to NetGalley for this
chance to enjoy this one!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of A Girl Called Hope from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was an original story. It was well written and most of the tragic plot seemed very plausible. I found it interesting and generally believable. (A plot twist---which I will not reveal--involving the history of Hope's family, was held in higher regard than I expected by another important character in the novel.). My only wish is that there had been a little more romance in this book.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

This book is too similar to other historical fiction books. The characters were unimaginative and stereotypical. I am disappointed for myself, but I am sure the novel will have an audience.
