This was as utterly adorable as I had hoped it would be. The illustration style is cute as heck, the colour palette is super satisfying, and the text is wonderfully clear to read.
I'd absolutely be interested in more from this world, the Nanas in particular!

One of my reading goals for 2019 was to read more graphic novels and I am so very grateful that Mooncakes was one of them. It is a story about love, family, and magic, which are basically all the things I need in life. I loved this one so much!

A (Queer, Chinese-American) Paranormal Romance

One night, a girl goes into the forest following up on reports of a white wolf being spotted there, only to end up fighting a horse demon and finding out that the wolf if her childhood crush. The two, with the help of two very cute grandmas, search for a way to destroy the horse demon and uncover a secret cult determined to harness werewolf magic to use for themselves.

There are two main characters in this story who are both Chinese-American. Nova Huang is a witch who is hard of hearing. She lives with her two Nanas (AKA the cutest grandmas ever!!) and works with them in their book store. Tam Lang is a nonbinary werewolf who has recently left their family because they weren’t very nice to them.

On top of the magical elements, this story is about self-discovery and being who you truly want to be. Nova and Tam rekindle the feelings they once had for each other. They both must overcome the hurt they both have from their parents, and even though the situations are different, they are there for each through the hurt and the magic.

Overall, I had a huge smile on my face the entire time I was reading this one. It was beautiful, powerful, and magical in every way. When Tam notices Nova changed her hearing aid color, my heart was so happy. And don’t get me started on the queer Nanas, I loved them so much and their witty banter. I can’t wait to see what Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu have in store for us next.

I love this graphic novel! It's beautiful and the story has a spark in it with a same sex relationship. A childhood friendship that became more and a demon that wants to harm or kill, I couldn't tell, the werewolf and her witch girlfriend trying to help her figure out how to use her wolf magic. It is so cute! The drawings well done. They may not be perfect, but hey nothing is perfect. I really enjoyed reading this fun, cute graphic novel. Again, thank you for providing me a copy of this graphic novel.

I gave this a five stars. I really loved it and I plan on getting a finished copy. I loved the relationships in this. And how a hard ship brought the two of them together. I absolutely recommended this. I also liked the rep in this book too.

This was a magical story, for so many fantastic reasons. I’ve been wanting to read this since my friends brought it to my attention and I’m so glad I got early access to it through NetGalley.
The representation in this book is amazing and it adds so much depth to the story. I’m so glad we’re moving more rapidly into a time where representation is more present in our literature, we still have a long way to go, but this is start. The art and illustration is so cute and makes my heart warm, it’s a perfectly contained story but I would love to see more in this world. I love all the different characters present, the grandmas are loving and kind and parental relationships are complicated but there’s growth throughout the story. The relationships and friendships in here are a beautiful example for youth to look at, healthy relationships that may inspire them.

This graphic novel is one of the cutest stories I have read in a long time. The art style is beautiful, colorful, and captures the story perfectly. The banter is funny and light hearted with underlining deep issues that people go through on daily basis. The story follows a bi-sexual witch named Nova, who needs to use hearing aids, and a nonbinary (she-they) werewolf named Tam. They both face hardships and overcome them together. Tam has just returned tp their home town in search of a way to destroy a demon that a cult group wants to use to posses them. As Tam and Nova work together to figure out how Tam's wolf magic works, they admit their feelings to each other and find out that they can do anything as long as they are together.

I have been following Mooncakes since it was being published as a webcomic on tumblr and I'm so happy to see it coming into print.

Mooncakes is a queer, sweet, heartfelt, handwritten love letter to love, friendship and families whether they be the family you were born with or the family you choose along the way. The cast of characters is diverse and rendered with such tenderness that you want to hug everyone. Nova is a witch carefully finding her footing in a world that has been hard for her. Raised by her grandmothers, she begins the comic searching for purpose and direction. Enter long-time friend and crush Tam, a werewolf, who comes back in to her life with a problem that takes a village to solve. With everyone working together, they fight to protect their homes both literally and metaphorically speaking. The end result is something so pure and wonderful and I cannot recommend it enough.

The art style is lovely, full of muted Fall colors and evokes the same sweet sentiment of the story itself, creating a truly complementary experience overall. The level of detail is impressive, every panel is designed with balance and symmetry, nothing overwhelming any of the story notes, and with an aesthetic that is truly pleasing to the eye.

I specifically applaud the genderqueer representation and perfectly executed acceptance without hesitation or question of Tam Lang in all their magical brilliance. If you like stories about discovering who you are and what you could be, sweet, soft romances, and a touch of magic, you will love this.

Absolutely loved this! The story was a wonderful quick read and the illustration style was gorgeous. All in all this book left me craving more in the best possible way!

I don’t really read a lot of graphic novels so I wasn’t too sure how I would like this one. The story was good and the artwork was really beautiful. I really enjoyed the characters and how much diversity was included here. Both MCs are Chinese - American, we have queer characters including Tam being non-binary, and disability rep because Nova is hard of hearing. Honestly, there is a lot of good here!

What I guess I had trouble with was the pacing of the story. There were quite a few times where it felt as if I was missing something or was reading the second book in a series. I constantly felt like I was missing something. To add to that, even though the relationship between Nova and Tam was really cute, It did seem like they became a couple really fast. One minute they are childhood crushes and then, BAM! They are in a relationship.

While I did have trouble with the pacing, this graphic novel does have a lot of good in it. The artwork was good and there is so much diversity. I think that so many people will love this when it released later this year!

This was so precious and everything i wanted in a graphic novel!

The overall tone was atmospheric and made me beyond excited for the upcoming fall months in New England. The subject matter was also right up my alley and the magic system was very similar to that of the Harry Potter series which I really enjoyed. Oh and the romance was ADORABLE.

I can't wait to get my hands on a final copy in October to see the finalized artwork! Also crossing my fingers that we'll get a sequel in the future since it finished on an open-ended note.

Mooncakes is a simple, magical tale that can entrance anyone looking for a short, whimsical story. The art style wasn't too complex, but it stood as cute. The plot wasn't very deep, but deep enough for a complete graphic novel, though I do wish that the story was a bit more complex, bringing more to the plot. However, as far as completion goes, I'd say this story does its job. The characters, in my opinion, could've been more rounded out, but I get the feeling that the book was going for flatter characters so that those characters would have room to grow and fill out in terms of relationships and personal growth.
In the end, Mooncakes is a tale that I could enjoy with a nice pumpkin spice latte in the cool of October.

This is a beautifully illustrated queer fantastical graphic novel. The representation in this graphic novel is fantastic with a queer disabled main character and the other main character identifies as non-binary. The supernatural story is weaved in wonderfully with the exploration of the relationships and development of the characters. This was outside of my normal comfort zone but I truly enjoyed it and can't wait to re-read it again when the final product is released.

This was a really cute, enjoyable read! I loved the witchcraft and the importance of family. Tam and Nova were really cute. The only problem I had was that I felt like the dialogue was jumpy in certain scenes and everything was wrapped up too quickly. It was kind of awkward to read and felt forced. However, the illustrations were really cute and I still think it's an enjoyable read!

A cute graphic novel about a werewolf and a witch set in a sleepy New England town. Personally, I was more invested in the characters than the plot but I enjoyed it nevertheless. Nova and Tam's relationship was sweet- I'm hoping for a sequel because I'd love to see these characters more as well as Tatyana because she was pretty great. Overall, a fun read with neat illustrations, magical charms, and autumn vibes that gave me cravings for pumpkin spice lattes in the middle of summer!

This is absolutely adorable. The art style is incredible and definitely pulled me in. Mooncakes had me smiling from start to finish.

This to me was such a pure and sweet story that can't help but pull you in. I really hope this is the start of a series and we get to see the relationship between Tam and Nova develop further throughout each one. This very much feels like the start of something amazing! I would honestly recommend this to anyone that is interested in the synopsis, you won't be disappointed.

Mooncakes is the story of a witch and a werewolf, Nova and Tam. Tam has been gone for years but when they come back, they find Nova pretty fast and confide in her. They're being hunted fro their wolf magic. Nova and her grandmas take Tam under their wings.

I really liked this. The story was interesting and pretty well paced, the characters had depth and so did their relationships. I just felt like something was missing. I guess it could have been a bit longer and add some suspense both in the main plot but also in the relationship plots... I don't know. I would love a sequel though, I would love to see these characters more.

What a beautiful little story!

I had different expectations when first going into it. I expected the usual kind of heavy action and plot that goes into similar premised books such as this -- and Mooncakes didn't have that. While that is the reason it took me a little bit into the book, once I understood the tone and what I could expect, I was happily surprised.

Mooncakes is less of a thrilling book to read and more of a soft and cozy story that romanticizes the slice of life kind of thing (with some supernatural elements thrown in for good measure!)

It was a sweet, romantic read with LGBT+ leads, a supportive family for Nova (our protagonist), and an art style this is cute and a little whimsical.

The only drawback that I had from this, was the climax of the main plot. It felt a little gimmicky and shallow, but not enough that it look away from the story.

I definitely recommend this if you're looking for something cozy and sweet!

Nova is a teenage witch working with her grandmas at their bookshop. Tam, her child-hood best friend (and maybe a little more than that), come back to their old town, needing help against dark forces that are pursuing them. I KNOW : this is the graphic novel you didn't know you needed. And you will probably fall in love with it as I did.
You cannot not love this graphic novel. First of all, let's talk about the obvious : the art. Wendy Xu's art is all I love : from the sweet, soft lines to the gorgious color palette, the comic boards are immensly aesthetically pleasing and just beautiful. Overwhelming, but in a good way. I wanna use them as wallpaper for my room.
The storyline and drawings carry a cute, witchy ambiance that I love. We have magic, witchcraft, and a spark of romance, all surrounded by books. I mean, that's all i ever asked for.
Of course, the strengh of the book is its characters. It can be hard to develop complex characters when the authours also want to develop an action-packed storyline. Well, Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu did it. The grandmas are simply iconic, Nova is absolutly sweet and inspiring, Tam is touching and Tatyana is hilarious. I want to be best friend with all of them and participate in their adventures.
The storylines itself is not outstanding but still is good enough and satisfying. There are some plot twits that really had me SHOOK - even though one seemed pretty obvious.
The only thing I could hold against the novel is the pacing. It was maybe a little too quick. Although that can be just me, wanting the story to last longer.

YAAAAS! I was so excited to read this! Two Asian-American protagonists, both queer, one is non-binary and the other has a hearing disability, one is a witch, the other a werewolf - I AM HERE FOR IT! If all of that is not enough to make you fall in love with this story, what about a beautiful coloring and artwork? Or lesbian grandmothers? Magical forest creatures? Tons of magic?

Mooncakes was a really entertaining and lovely story to read. I had heard of Wendy Xu's fiction work (small self-promo in one of the scenes was great!) but hadn't had a chance to pick it up so far. I'll definitely look it up now and look forward to both authors future works.
