Ben thinks highly of himself, “you done checking me out, so I can get dressed.” Ben really should be thankful his woman isn't a money grabber, “why do you have to be so difficult? I said take the card.” I motion sharply for him to take it. “I’m already late. Come on, Ben. Just take it.” Ben’s nostrils flare and his jaw ticks, but to my relief, he snatches the card from my hand." Ben can totally compromise, “you can call the shots next time, babe. Right now, you’re gonna take off your shirt.” I liked this book, I loved Ben.

This is hands down a new favorite author for me! I adored her writing style and almost felt Emelia/Em/Emmy/Shortcake was modeled after how my own brain works! I seriously say a lot of things that she says throughout the book. Like too many things. So many things that I wondered if there was a secret hidden camera in my brain the author was tapping into.

As a PTSD survivor myself, this book held some raw truths that only another survivor can truly understand. It shows the many facets of PTSD, and that it's not just military men and women who suffer from it. Although Ben is ex-military and does have it too. I love that she shows how strong both characters are and gently leads into the 'why's" of their struggles with the demons/memories from their pasts.

This book is laugh out loud funny and every single one of the characters will steal your heart! The chemistry between Ben and Emmy is built up wonderfully! If I had one wish, it would have been to have this written from a dual perspective. I would have loved to delve more into Ben's thoughts, feelings, and emotions like I was with Emmy. But that does not take away from the book at all!

This book is a true winner and I can not wait to read more from this author. And hopefully, the other characters get their own books too, because they need it. I mean seriously Ms. Watson, do it for the people! :-)

This was fantastic! Loved the battle of the sexes between Ben and Emelia. Emelia takes care of Ben's beloved grandmother until she dies leaving the house and her money to both Ben and Emelia. Both have to love together in order to inherit the property and money. Ben thinks the worst of her and treats her like crap but Emelia dishes it right back. The book is the perfect recipe of wit, originality and heart wrenching romance. It makes it especially entertaining with the introduction of Ben's friends who are hilarious and swewt.
Both Ben and Emelia have troubled pasts but their resilience and strong personality forces them to stick it out because neither of them want to quit. Love prevails in the end and both realize they can't live without the other. Hope the author writes more and makes it into a series.

4.5 stars. ARC given for an honest review. This book was LOL funny. I loved Emmy and this was a sweet romance. This is the first book by this author and I can’t wait to read the next one. I will say this about the book. This is a slow burn book and I mean slow, but it kept my interest. I even reread the ending a few times. I almost thought the book was written on Wattpad because it kinda read like every chapter was a cliffhanger. It wasn’t. I yelled at the book several times and that means it was a good one. Highly recommend.

I received a copy of this book from Net Galley for an honest review. My opinions are my own and are not influenced by the writer or publisher. I will state that I have never read anything by Lucy before and I had not heard about her previous works.

Although this book was a good enemies or lovers romance, there were things in the plot that just made me feel gross. Emmy and Ben both need some serious lessons on effective communication because I had absolutely no reason to believe that the ending would be as it was. It was cute don't get me wrong.. but the fake marriage on top of Ben thinking Emmy manipulated her way into his inheritance and the trauma with both characters' histories.. it was a lot. There is also no clear point in this book where I feel as though Ben has stopped thinking that Emmy manipulated Rose.. I wanted to know more about their histories. What specifically happened with the shooting that Emmy was involved in? How did Ben get the scars on his body from his time in the Marines? I felt there was ample opportunity for those topic to be explored and it would have helped develop the characters.

Overall, I would not have fallen for Ben. The character made be cringe. Even when they had crossed the line into lovers, he was still rude and arrogant and just an all around dick. I liked Ben's friend more than him. I honestly don't think I would explore a romantic relationship with someone who thought it would be appropriate to throw me in a giant trash bin.

3 stars from us.

***Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***

I absolutely devoured Lucy Watson's Shortcake! The characters are vividly real and fun. The romance is sizzling. I don't know why men who are jerks (with hidden depths) are so hot, but Shortcake is one example of how hot a jerk can be. I wish there had been a little less caveman grunts and more self-respect for our main character, but in the end it seems to make sense.

Holy crap. I can't even explain how much I loved this novel. The characters were downright hilarious and I seriously couldn't stop laughing at their witty banter. Needless to say I don't know how Lucy Watson did it but she won me over with this enemies turned lovers trope and whirlwind romance that stole my heart. It's been a while since I last came across a romantic comedy that actually had the 'comedy' in it. So I have to applaud the author on her outstanding debut and I hope we're able to revisit these characters in the future.

So, I got about halfway through this book and just couldn't continue it. As a PTSD survivor myself, it just triggered me too much and the hostility that Ben showed was borderline abusive. The creepy relationship with her cousin made me severely uncomfortable too. 2/5 stars. It would be better if I wasn't a survivor myself I'm sure.

5 strong stars for Shortcake. This book just catapulted itself onto my best of 2019 list! Very much in the same category as The Hating Game, this story is a haters to lovers tale that I just couldn’t get enough of. I don’t know if this is the author’s first book, but I can’t wait to read more from her.

Woosshh... that is the sound of this book flying to my favorite-2019 shelf. After being in a bit of a reading slump I was so happy to find this book! I loved and enjoyed it.

The book is called 'Shortcake' and is written by Lucy Watson. As a 'The Hating Game' fan by Sally Thorne you get the attracted immediately. Shortcake and Lucy on a cover.. yummy. I just had to request it @Netgalley!

The cover is a bit misleading. The book is a romance and it has a lot of funny moments, but also more heavy moments. Emmy is a nurse and has just lost her patient, Rose. Rose was a friend to her and when the family arrives at the house she expects to leave and find another place to live and work. However, it seems Rose had other ideas! Emmy and Rose's grandson Ben must live in the house and fulfill some tasks to both inherit half the estate. If they forfeit everything will go to Ben's father, the father he is embroiled with.

Ben doesn't like Emmy, at all and so a small war is fought between them while painting and doing their part of the deal. They both give as good as they get, a real enemies-to-lovers! I must say I enjoyed their quarrels and one-upping each other. Also really liked the friends.

The book is a slow-burn as to the fact it takes until almost the end of the book before they get it on, but the time-frame of the book is only a month. I finished the book in just a couple of hours, I really enjoyed it so much. It is also filled with references to movies and series.

Only after you start wondering about certain things (there is a loose end I would like to have seen fixed) but maybe I just should NOT start wondering and just take the book for what it is. I loved reading it and look forward to more books by this author. I would also like some more about these characters!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this book.
The chemistry between these two characters is written really well. The situation they're in is also amusing and gives them a lot of sexual tension. There were just a few issues that I wanted to know more about; like Ben's injuries, his Dad's illness (did they reconcile?) and Emelia's anxiety.
The moments Ben and Emelia shared where they were actually talking and getting to know each other were really nice. It would've been sweet if they'd been able to discuss Rose a bit more before the rushed wedding but I suppose it was too much too soon.
The side characters and Ben's friends were a funny addition.
An addictive read.

This is Ben and Emelia book, Emelia is a caretaker for an older woman who passes away and the woman is Ben grandmother, Ben is an ex military man that comes to his grandma home when she passes. The will says the two must live together and fix the house together!! Just the two of them no outside help! They must fix the house and live together for the next 30 days or the estate will go to Ben’s father, who Ben hates more than anything else in this world! Ben can’t stand Emelia he think she’s a money grubbing leach! But they must work together because he’d rather deal with her than have The estate go to his father! This book was very interesting I did like it but I don’t know, I didn’t like the way the author spoke I guess it’s hard to explain if you read this book then I guess you’ll see what I’m talking about or maybe you wont LOL I did like it like I said but it was just a little different I guess? Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for sharing this book with me!
