I haven't read anything by Rebecca before, so I didn't really know what to expect. I was enthralled, entertained and thrilled until the end, and will definitely read more by her in future. Recommended.

Caroline and Joanna are sent to spend a summer with their Great-Aunt Dora in the quiet village of Witchwood. It is a beautiful summer with the freedom of the countryside and the friendship with the pub landlord’s daughter. Then it all goes horribly wrong. A sequence of events leading to a terrible death. Now years later Joanna discovers that her sister, Caroline, is still haunted by the events of that summer. Joanna has to return to Witchwood to discover the past.

This is a well written thriller in two time periods. We follow the present day Joanna as she attempts to discover what was terrifying her sister. We also follow the two girls as they enjoy their summer of freedom until it all goes horribly wrong. As Joanna remembers, so we discover the murder suspects and the seemingly inconsequential events that lead up to the death.

I enjoyed this book. The characters are very real and three dimensional. The childish actions of the two girls, the unknown implications of what they say and do seem very real. Who doesn’t tease their sibling, who doesn’t say what they think they want to hear to make them less grumpy? Normal sibling behaviour which, in this case, had great implications. Those awkward early teenage years with their crushes & the need to be so grown up whilst still hanging on to some childish desires. The interaction between the two sisters & their friend are what made this book a bit different.

In all this is a good read. Plenty of mystery and intrigue with a good twist at the end. I shall certainly keep my eyes open for another book by this author.

I received a free copy of this book via Netgalley.

A good read. Why does Caroline think she's being stalked? What did Joanna do that summer that fractured the sister's relationship? What happened in the village that summer?

This book felt over long for the first half with characters being drawn carefully and vividly. This scene setting made sense as the second half of the book cantered along with the story flying by (in a good way). The way in which the characters had been introduced in the first half of the book meant that the pace of the book was able to be picked up without losing a sense of the depth of the characters. A good ending which keeps the reader guessing. A recommended read.

A dark and twisty thriller that races along. Taught and suspenseful, it was a great read that I would definitely recommend to people.

This is one of those reads I am in two minds over, maybe because it was written over the two time periods 1990 and the present. I’m not always keen on books that do this. However that is just down to personal preference. Others probably like this way of telling a story.

Two sisters Joanne and Caroline in the summer of 1990. Something happened causing the two sisters to have a falling out, later Joanne had to go and identify her sisters body. Had she committed suicide? If so why?

Some of the story was a little slow paced other bits drew you in, with some parts deliberately throwing you off of what happened.

The two sisters were spending summer at their great aunts in the country. A chance to get away from a town life. Staying in a sleepy little village. The aunt seemed happy enough for the girls to do whatever they wanted for the most part. Having a bit more freedom.
Something had clearly happened whilst they were staying at their great aunt Dora’s. But what? And what impact did it have on the future.

Some of the characters were well written drawing you in. Great Aunt Dora being an interesting and colourful lady, and Mrs Hooper Joanne’s piano teacher,. Some of the other characters weren’t as convincing.

The main thing is what happened in 1990, the disappearance of a child and Caroline stirring up trouble in the village with her words that left life in shreds. Joanna investigated the past to find out what had happened all those years ago trying to find out the truth. The pace gradually going leading to a big secret revealed at the end.

Overall a good read.

As young children Caroline and Joanna are sent to stay with their great-aunt in a remote village. Pretty much left to their own devices they have a great time, until an awful chain of events is set off.
The events surrounding their childhood - where their young friend is found murdered - have clearly impacted on their adulthood, though we don’t put all the pieces together until later on.
Suffice to say, this is a fairly typical scenario. We are more focused on the extent to which the girls are involved, why at least one of them thinks they’re culpable and how all the loose ends get tied up.
Unfortunately, the modern day situation always felt like we were one step behind things and the final ‘twist’ was meant to be shocking but wasn’t actually feeling like much of a reveal.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with the chance to read this in exchange for my thoughts.

I received an advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book was just OK. A standard issue thriller - If you like that sort of thing you’ll like this but there’s nothing really to recommend it beyond just the conventions of the genre for its fans.

A Place To Lie has a great start! Then we have the storyline of modern day and then thrown back into 1990. I really enjoyed Rebecca’s writing style, very flowing and romantic atmosphere and I was gripped throughout.
This is definitely one for your summer reading list.
A strong 4/5.
