A Pixie, Olivia, and the (or one of the) Grim Reapers (Ryker) work to make life or the world a wee bit safer for those that choose to live in it or have come to it for safety from their own world's troubles with Death. That in its self had me interested and then confused at the same time. I wanted to know more about Olivia, Ryker, Death, the Fae. I wanted to know why so many came to Earth in our realm of existence. I was excited to see more of what lead so much to have to so many.

Olivia was likeable until she wasn't. The time losses were a bit daunting. The friends made were entertaining. The idea that Fae would willing come to Earth to live among the common human was page turning. I wanted answers and turned every page to get more. Although I did not feel the book ended with a cliffhanger, I did feel like there was more to the story and the migration of Fae. I look forward to seeing how things all unfold in the series of Death Seeker.

I was looking for more depth and dimension from the characters along with the world that was built around it. I just was expecting more. While it was the first book of the series this will give me more time to hopefully see this world grown and the characters evolve to something more.

I was really curious to discover Cecy Robson’s new series and even more knowing that this time it featured faes and Death. How can we resist it?

So we discover Olivia, a pixie, who works in a law firm run by other companies. But the faes are on earth not by their own will, but more to try to survive the creatures that hunt them all. Olivia has already faced them several times and miraculously escaped alive, yet it seems that this time is too much for her. This is how her world will start to be completely turned upside down. She will have to fight to survive, try to control powers she didn’t think she had, and most importantly, try to figure out how to manage the new role that falls on her without warning.

I had a really good time with the characters and I was really curious to see where things were going to lead us. Because it must be said that our heroes will have to deal with a lot of things. Olivia has a touch of humor that I really enjoyed finding throughout the pages despite everything that is going on for her. What about Riker? He is intriguing, dark, touching and I was curious to learn more about him to see what he was hiding exactly.

It was a very nice first volume and I am very curious to read more as always with Cecy Robson!

Unearthed: A Death Seeker Novel has a premise where Fae creatures have come to earth to escape the Death that stalks their land and devours their souls so they can never rest. It’s a cool premise to be sure and that was my draw in as I usually enjoy stories with Fae ties and I thought the added touch of death into the story could work really well since most of the time Fae are thought of as practically immortal.

I will have to say there are a lot of things that just weren’t my cup-a. But first let's talk about what the story has going for it.

1 - Death, well at least this version of Death in the Grim Reaper was hot. I enjoyed his character and liked the idea that even Death is looking to get out of his gig and wants to be set free.

description

2 - This story has Dragons. I usually really like the addition of Dragons into a story as Dragons are cool.

3 – Olivia is likable with her love of pink, rainbow hair and prancing Pixie ways. Even though she was so cliché, she was fun and I liked her.

Now some of the issues I had that made some parts of this less enjoyable for me might sound a bit nitpicky to you perhaps, but they nagged me.

1 – The Fae on earth included Pixies, Dragons, a Hydra, a nymph, a gargoyle, gremlins and elves. Those are just the things we see. But I don’t really remember Dragons, Hydra and Gargoyles being part of any Fae mythos I’ve read before so they felt throw in willy nilly with no explanation of this Fae world.

2 – And speaking of no explanation, there isn’t exactly any backstory as to why one day Fae’s incarnation of Death decided to start killing Fae who were alive to eat their souls and hunting them to extinction. It seems like there should be some reasoning there or a prophecy or something.

3 – The office Olivia works in seems like a CW version of a law office if you worked there with kids from your high school. I mean some of the stuff was a little extreme and out of nowhere. It was entertainingly silly but I had a hard time buying into it.

4 – Vanessa the egg extractor. Why? Why is there a sentient egg extractor? What is she for? Why is she at the end during all of the fighting? I have no idea what the purpose of this thing was, why it hummed and why Human Grim Reaper Death has it in a box he took to the battle at the end.

5 – The very YA romance happening/not happening between Death and Olivia. I want him/her and we can’t be together cuz reasons. The tension between them had its moments but overall it felt YA to me and very manufactured.

And last, but not least, when telling a story in first person I don’t like when the main characters passes out, only to come to later when the battle is over and other things have happened. I give the author a pass to do this every once and awhile as sometimes it is necessary. But it happened multiple times in the same book and for me that is a huge no no and makes me feel like the author isn’t really trying.

For me this didn’t really work. But for a lot of my fellow reviewers it did and if some of the things I mentioned aren’t deal breakers for you than there is a lot of fun in this story to be had.

The story is entertaining and if I’d just come off of a really tense book, I probably would have enjoyed the levity in this story a little more. As is there were just too many holes for me to kick back and just enjoy the action that was happening.

One of my favorite things about Urban Fantasy is that you get things like a law firm staffed by the Fae. That's where we meet Olivia, a pixie who lost her powers when her family escaped to the human realm. It gets even better when one of her co-workers turns out to be the Grim Reaper. But there are other types of Death in the world as well and they are hunting the Fae.

Olivia discovers that she has new powers that can help her fight the hell hounds that are after her people. Enter Ryker who rescues her and offers to train her. Those scenes remind me of Cassie and Pritkin in the Cassie Palmer series, which I love. Also like Cassie, Olivia is unprepared for the sudden responsibility, in over her head and making it up as she goes along.

I loved the chemistry between Olivia and Ryker. And I liked the supporting characters. Dragons serve the role often filled by vampires in UF of a mob boss type and his muscle, which is a fun twist. And there's a gargoyle, which I love to see. I'm also intrigued by the idea that all these different versions of Death, presumably from different world mythologies, are all in competition for the same souls.

But there a few elements that I liked much less. First of all, first person POV is uncomfortable when the main character is being beaten. And it makes for abrupt ends in the action when that character passes out. I also felt like the villain was scary enough without making threats of sexual violence. They made him seem more human, as opposed to being a monster, which was unnecessary. And then there's this sentient tool/weapon that's just weird and squicky. Maybe its purpose will become clear in a later book?

Still, I enjoyed the book overall. I like where the characters wind up in the end and I'm looking forward to seeing what's next.

I’m a huge fan of all things paranormal, and I’ve been reading this author’s paranormal books for awhile. When the chance to read this one came, I jumped on it quickly. Olivia is an interesting character, and I loved the interaction with her boss at the law firm. She was just so take-charge. I was a little disappointed that didn’t translate into her personal life for the thing she’s destined to do. No spoilers! However, she is still a fun, interesting characters. In addition to her, I really enjoyed the side characters, and I am hopeful we’ll get to know them better in the next book/books. The universe was intriguing, but I wish we had learned a little more. Again, I’m hoping for that in the future books. All in all, I really enjoyed this fun beginning glimpse into Olivia’s world and I’m looking forward to more. Recommend! I was a provided a copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

There doesn't seem to be a whole lot that Cecy Robson can't write, which is why not only is she one of my most favorite authors but also why I quickly grab every book from her I possible can. I also know, regardless of the genre or the topic, she will do it well and do it justice.

I normally shy away from books about the fae, with a few exceptions because most of them are so overdone and the same old same old but knowing what Robson can do with the mundane and same old same old, had me picking this up without hesitation and thankfully, once again, Robson pulled through and delivered something original and fun and oh so hard to put down.

I devoured this. Every. Single. Page. And just couldn't get enough. I was so sad when it ended and was already on the lookout for the next book. I can't wait for more, I so was not ready for this one to be over. I love these characters, this world, the concept and well, really, everything. Once again Robson blew it out of the park and created something that everyone can enjoy, lover of the fae or not.

I first discovered this author when I picked up the first book in her Weird Girls urban fantasy series, progressed to her contemporaries, and was excited to see she was taking us back to an urban fantasy world. This time her supernaturals are fae hiding among the humans when the hounds of death got a taste for living fae souls. Suspenseful, emotional, sensual, and exciting with that welcome inclusions of the author’s own brand of humor made this a fab reading experience.
Review

Unearthed begins with pixie, Olivia Finn, working in a prestigious Jersey City law firm with her best bud while keeping up with her curmudgeonly unorganized boss and avoiding the sex on legs cold lawyer Riker. She lost her family to the death hounds when she was young and now, like every other fae, she’s trying to keep her head down and out of their notice especially since Olivia seems to be the only fae who made it through the door between worlds sans magic and her pixie wings.

All this changes when a night of terror at a fae night club shows her an unexpected magic that thwarts death itself, but not before there is terrible heart-breaking loss. Now, she is on the death hounds hit list and someone is helping them root out hidden fae. Olivia is the hope of the fae now and she must turn to the last person she would like to for help learning to use her new-found magic.

Unearthed was an obvious series introduction book, but I enjoyed the way the author revealed her world, her characters, and the situation. It rolled out steadily without being tedious as Olivia went about her new life and death daily life.

Olivia is easy to imagine as a pixie. She’s colorful and fun-loving, strong sense of humor and not the most obvious heroine savior out there with her lack of fight ability and aggressiveness. But, she has a big heart and a need to avenge her family while protecting her fae people so she fearfully takes on the impossible it seems.

But, Olivia is not alone. There is is her trainer and the most confusing, deeply wounded person she knows and misunderstood all along. There is the old ancient fae hydra sharing her officework and her friendship with a power punch of magic. One of her bosses, Bill the gargoyle who is the de facto fae leader. And, a few dragons to pad out the underdog team.

The villains, the hounds of hell who are bloated on fae souls and magic are vicious, disgusting, and perfectly evil, especially the alpha dog. They had a shadowy ally and it was a nice suspense element to see that get revealed near the end, but in the meantime, they were easy to root against.

There is a halting romance, but it has its conflicts going along the side of the main plot of Olivia prepping and taking on a powerful enemy. I look forward to seeing where things go next for this pair and also the ongoing efforts with the team who are challenging death stalking the fae and eventually the oblivious humans all with a dose of humor that is laugh out loud at times.

All in all, this was a sensational start to a new series and I can’t wait to keep going along. Urban Fantasy lovers should definitely give this new one a look-see.

My thanks to Caffeinated PR services and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

My Thoughts:

Unearthed was the first book I've read by Cecy Robson, and I really enjoyed it! Olivia came from Fae, but had to relocate to earth (New York,) after it was destroyed by death. When she and her friends are attacked by the Cu-Sith,(death hounds, a form of death that killed her family,) she discovers that she has unique powers that make her the only hope for her kind. She thought she lacked magical abilities, but while the earth's magic has clashed with the majority of magical beings, in others, it has altered it.

The Grim Reaper, Ankou, or (The King of the Dead,) offers to train Olivia, so that she can hone her abilities, and become stronger and more powerful; in order to defeat Cathasach, the ultra powerful and sadistic leader of the Cu-Sith. What starts as an unlikely partnership, quickly turns in to a close friendship, and feelings begin to grow between Olivia and the Ankou. However, the Ankou has asked Olivia to release his soul from the torment that he has experienced for so long, in exchange for his help. If she defeats Cathasach, can she destroy the soul of the Grim Reaper, when she is falling in love with him?

Unearthed was such a fun and fast-paced urban fantasy. I loved encountering so many different magical creatures; pixies, nymph's, elves, leprechauns, fairies, garden gnomes, giants, banshee's, gargoyle's, dragons, and more! The dangerous tension of the ever growing threat of Cathasach and the Cu-Sith kept me at the edge of my seat. I loved watching as Olivia trained and learned how to use her magical abilities. She was petite, but packed a powerful punch with her huge heart, courage, perseverance, and compassion to those all around her. I loved her character!

The Grim Reaper was a character that I enjoyed getting to know as well. He was extremely lonely, tormented, and ashamed of who he was, and what he had to do to survive. However, Olivia brought out a fiercely loyal, attentive, and vulnerable side to him. The interactions between these two were exciting, and had me eager for more!

As far as secondary characters went, my favorite was Jane, an extremely old and powerful hydra. She brought levity, and a ton of laughs to the story with her eccentric personality! I also loved the shapeshifting dragons, (Olivia's good friend, Frankie,) and (Stevie, a goth teen who had a huge crush on Olivia, and she had sworn to protect.)

If you're in the mood for a fun, fast-paced Urban Fantasy, with a variety of magical creatures, danger, a ton of laughs, and the beginning of an epic romance, I recommend you check out Unearthed!

I ended up DNFing this at the halfway point, but might pick it up again later to finish it. The premise is really interesting, and it's well written if somewhat repetitive. It's just not holding my attention and I find myself cleaning the house to avoid reading - a total reversal of the norm for me, I assure you.

I loved the concept of this...light and dark, good and evil, the characters are amazing and compelling. I am eagerly looking forward to another book in this series, there is so much more to learn.

When it comes to office drama Unearthed fits the bill with secret magical beings and a fae pixie named Olivia, who becomes the target of the Cù-Sìth.

The Cù-Sìth are Celtic demon dogs who destroyed the homeland of the Fae, and after killing Olivia's entire family, the survivors were forced to hide on Earth.

Only now, " hiding from death is no longer an option"...

Olivia's special ability makes her immune to Death hence Cathasach, the packs Alpha is attracted to her and becomes her predator. Still, she'll need to grow some heavy balls and become stronger to keep her people safe if she is going to fight with death. So, Ryker Scott volunteers to teach her how to use her powers which will destroy every form of Death and become a hero.

Ryker is normally a handsome and sexy criminal defence lawyer but he is also the Grim Reaper aka Ankou. Therefore, his need to feast on souls consists of his clients. Genius. There is a slight hint of romance between Ryker and Olivia and moments of humour to lighten the mood.

Even though I had to read the book twice, I appreciated it more the second time.

I loved Olivia's colorful outlook compared to Ryker's. Olivia and Ryker together were perfect yin and yang. The story's pace was steady and action packed. I would love to read Frankie's story as well as Stevie's. Jane is my favorite secondary character. I couldn't wait to see her pop up in the story. While humorous at times it had its sad moments as well. Olivia's training didn't just automatically make her a perfect warrior and it was those imperfections that made her real. Overall a great read and I will be picking up the next one.

Unearthed, A Death Seeker Novel, Cecy Robson

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

genre: General Fiction (Adult), Sci-fi and Fantasy

I love Cecy's stories so was keen to read this but...I did find it confusing at times. Its got that “first novel in series” issue that often happens, where there's so much to deliver, story, world building, type of character and what magics they have, that it can easily get confusing.
Everything here is so very different, for example Olivia is a pixie, but living among humans as so many of the Fae are, but undetected. She has magic that's so far unknown but when it does come its kind of typical Olivia, she of the rainbow coloured hair has pink magic, deadly, dangerous magic, but pink.

I really liked Olivia's spark, loved the humour in the book, the loyalty she inspires. I loved Jane, a fellow magic user, an Elder, but who communicates in somewhat different ways. Then there's Ryker...swoon...who turns out to be more than just a heart throb top legal expert.
There's a terrific cast overall, some much needed humour at times among all the death and destruction that lifted the tone just when I needed it. I had a hard time believing that all that devastation could go unnoticed by humans though, and it wasn't really explained that well. A couple of times early in the book we get to hear what story has been put out, but later on when the destruction is massive, I didn't find any explanations of how humans wouldn't have noticed, or what they would have thought.

I did find the constant battles with the hell hounds a bit wearying, and too graphic for me. I know it wasn't easy killing them, I know the deaths they caused weren't pretty, but after the third time of reading just how they dismembered victims I got the picture, didn't need a blow by blow account full of gore and detail every time. I ended up skipping those parts, and of course there lies the danger I may have skipped something that's later a major part of the story.

I enjoyed this story but wasn't riveted to it. I think its one I'll come back to further on in the series when I understand more, and get much more from it. For now I just feel a bit overwhelmed by such complex events and characters. Its a three star now, but I suspect when I'm more into the series it'll actually be a five star read. I'm just still a bit confused and bemused...
BTW thanks Cecy, no awful cliffhanger, my bête noire . This story ties up with indications for future books and that's just how I like a book in a series to end.

Stars: Three, a story that's complex, and I found a bit too packed with world setting, new events and characters. I feel when I understand more of this world I'd probably rate this a five but for now its a three.

What Did I Like About It?
Cecy Robson is a new-to-me author but found this book engaging and easy to read. I liked Ms Robson’s writing style; the prose she used, the balance of dialogue to narrative, the pace of her plot and the characters that she created. I enjoy stories more when they are populated with complex, multifaceted characters – characters tend to feel more realistic when, like us, they live in the grey area between evil and goodness and are shown to be capable of both.

While I’m on the subject of characters, if you’ve read my reviews before, then you’ll know that I connect to a story more when the main female protagonist is intelligent, resilient, resourceful and has plenty of gumption; Olivia ticked all of my boxes and also came with a wonderful sense of humour. Riker was dark, deadly and damaged but with an air of old knight gallantry about him that satisfied all of my cravings as the main male protagonists in this tale. Perfect.

Unearthed didn’t take the course I was expecting – I thought a story about a pixie would be a light hearted humorous cozy paranormal mystery, it’s not – there’s more darkness, fear, terror and adult themes in this tale. But rest assured, dear reader, although it may have had my pulse racing in fear and tears streaming down my face in sorrow, it also made me smile and actually chuckle out loud, had me scratching my head trying to work out the mystery, warmed by old romantic heart and gave me delicious flutters of arousal. In short, I felt a completely emotional connection to this story, which is what we’re all looking for, right?! 😉

Was There Anything That I Didn't Like?
As you can tell by my rating, I really enjoyed this book and I am looking forward to seeing where Ms Robson takes us next.

I will just take this opportunity to remind you that as the first book in a new series, not all of our questions or mysteries are resolved within these pages, although the immediate threats are satisfactorily dealt with, there’s no awful life-or-death cliffhanger at the end of this book! Woo!Hoo!

So Basically, What I'm Saying Is...
I really enjoyed this story! It’s got everything that I look for to keep me engaged; great action to get my adrenaline pumping, an intelligent mystery to get my little grey cells whirling, nail biting tension to keep me on the edge of my seat, well written humour to put a smile on my face and balance any darker plot-lines and this story had the added bonus of a sprinkling of romance and sexual heat. Delightful!

Since the blurb and the cover got me curious, I requested the arc for Unearthed. What can I say: this was definitely not what I expected. since the Pixie on the cover was pink and with rainbow hair I thought it would be a cozy read. But no, you dive in nose first when the story starts with Hell Hounds, who rip magical beings apart before they eat them. Oh-kay... I didn't see that one coming, but the story is easy to read, with a lot of tension and even very funny parts. Olivia is the cute pixie from the cover, who has lost her family to the Hell Hounds of Death. Only a talisman keeps her safe from the Hounds. like all other magical creatures, she hides in plain sight on earth, working as a PA/administrator at a law firm. When on a night out gremlins appear and take of the talismans, Olivia gets rescued by a strange warrior, who turns out to be her biggest jack ass coworker: Ryker.
Ryker, turns out, is the Ankou: King of the Death and the one to help souls cross over after death. But the biggest shock is when Olivia turns out to be Life: the only one able to defeat the Alfa of the Hell Hounds of Death. So now, the fate of the magical race is on her shoulders, with only the grimm Ryker as her allie. No biggie. Together, Ryker and Olivia prepare for her big face-off with death. But can you ever be ready for that? Suspense, fun, loyalty and heartbreak. A wonderful mix. Four out of five stars from me and a special thank you to Netgalley for providing the arc.

Four stars: A book featuring fae and Death clashing in an epic battle of good and evil.

Olivia Finn is a paralegal working in a prestigious law firm, but there is so much more to her than meets the eye. In reality, Olivia is a pixie who escaped from the land of Fae, a paradise overrun by the death hounds. Olivia and her family fled to Earth in hopes of escaping, but unfortunately, the hounds of death followed. The only thing that protects the vagabond fae from being eaten by the hounds are the small talismans they must wear at all times that keep them veiled. Things go horribly wrong when gremlins begin stealing the talismans, exposing the fae to the death hounds. Then the King of the Dead swoops in. Death and Olivia may be the only thing standing between the hounds overrunning the Earth. Can this unlikely duo save the world?
What I Liked:
Cecy Robson is known for her creative urban fantasy novels. This one is no different. I enjoyed the new spin on Death and the fae. There is plenty to like in this one. Big props for originality.
It’s always a tall task to deliver something different when it comes to the paranormal, but Ms. Robson did her research and brought us plenty of unique characters. There are the Death Hounds, pixies, gargoyles and a centuries old female Druid who masquerades as an old lady, not to mention there are also dragons and the King of the Dead. I loved reading about all this different entities. Plenty of new and creative characters in this one.
The story is action packed. It hardly lets up. It opens with a terrifying encounter with the death hounds and goes on from there. There really aren’t very many quiet moments in this one, so if you are a reader that likes heaps of action, this is one to read.
I enjoyed the humor. In between the action and the death, there are some funny scenes peppered in. I especially got a kick out Stevie, the young teenage dragon, and Jane, the wizened Druid.
I have to admit, I was shocked when the mastermind behind the scenes was revealed. I didn’t see that one coming. I always like a novel that has a good twist. Not only did I like that I was surprised by the unmasking of the bad guy, I also liked the way it all goes down.
The book ends in a nice spot, no cliffhangers or loads of unanswered questions. Always nice when the first book of a series doesn’t leave you on the edge.
And The Not So Much:
I was disappointed that the law office had a couple of slutty secretaries. I could have done without that cliche.
I didn’t like that there were times when Olivia was in the midst of a terrible life and death battle, and then she blacked out. When she woke, up the fight was over. I wish the fight scenes had played out in their entirety, instead of the fade to black and then recap.
I wish that there was a little more depth and detail when it came to the land of the Fae. I was confused about the death hounds and their origin. I also found it a little perplexing to have two forms of death: The King of Death and the hounds.
Unearthed is a promising new start to an action packed, paranormal urban fantasy series. I enjoyed the unique paranormal characters as it is always nice to get originality. I also liked the action and the plot twists. I am eager to read more of this series. It certainly started out with a bang.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own, and I was not compensated for this review.

Always love Robson's paranormal adventures. The Seeker has a bit of a twist with the Fae try to stay under the radar in order to save themselves and humans. Olivia does not know what powers she has but knows that she does not like the hotshot lawyer Ryker. With the help of her office buddies this should be a magical ride. Great start to the series. "A copy of this book was provided by author via Netgalley with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my honest opinion."

Whenever I pick up a book written by Cecy Robson, I expect nothing but sheer awesomeness and Unearthed (Death Seeker) book 1, offered all that and more. Not only was it a unique and well-written story, it was awesome and captivating from start to finish.

The story was loads of fun. The interactions with the characters were both fun and solemn. Every moment felt real. I found myself invested in the lives of the characters. I feared for them in the face of danger and cheered them on in the heat of the battle. It was a pleasure spending time with these awesome characters, at least the good ones. My favourites are Olivia, Ryker, (main characters), Jane, Stevie and Marco (secondary characters). The evil ones were ok, but thank goodness, this is a fantasy, as I for one would not want to encounter those things in reality.

The attraction between the main characters leapt from the pages. The sexual tension was so thick not even a knife could penetrate it. There was so much going on Olivia and Ryker could not find time to give into the attraction. In addition, the baggage between these two proved to the biggest dampener.

The action was off the charts. The fight scenes kept me on the edge of my seat, and every moment leading up to those segments were nerve-wracking.

I found myself immersed in the world the author created. A unique world where the King of Death and the Queen of Life were actual people and were attracted to each other. Also in this world Faes dwell among humans, not because they want to, but because their world had been destroyed by the Death Hounds and those who survived the wrath of the hounds escaped to earth. Despite this, they were not safe as the death hounds were determined to extinguish every Fae.

Conclusion / Recommendation
This is an exciting start to the series, and I am eager to see what’s next in store for Ryker and Olivia. If you love fast paced and action packed stories with awesome characters, then I recommend you get a copy of Unearthed.

This is a wonderful book for after you've just gotten done reading a nerve-wracking thriller or a really heavy book. Cecy Robson kept this book light and fun with a bit of humor even though the tougher scenes.

The main character, Olivia, absolutely radiates with positivity and rainbows. Well, rainbows that are all shades of pink. She is a bit quirky, but in a good way. I found myself loving her character in the first chapter... but then I got a little underwhelmed with how she evolved through the book. I don't want to say that she evolved in a bad way, just a lot more pink and girly. I was hoping for a bit more of a strong female lead that fainted less. To be honest, I felt that she could be very immature at times for working at a law firm and having such a big responsibility placed on her shoulders.

Then, you have all of the supporting characters. Each supporting character was very unique and different. I mean, you have the Grim Reaper, a gargoyle, a hydra, and dragons. Not to mention the other smattering of mystical creatures! It is enough to really keep your imagination going. The descriptions were pretty on point and allowed me to mostly paint a vivid image in my head.

Now... the story line itself. The world building was really good and the mixture of mythology and the real world was done well. Plus, I really do think that it was a pretty original idea. However, there were a few parts that I felt were thrown in there for shock value. They didn't seem genuine to me.

All in all, this was a good read to kind of wind down between books. I would be interested in reading the second in the series just to see what happens next.

Unearthed is book one in the Death Seeker series by Cecy Robson.

I feel in love with Cecy Robson’s Weird Girls series and deiced to give her new Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance a try. I enjoyed the book, but I had trouble staying interested. Not sure if it’s just first book syndrome, but I’d read a few chapters, then put the book down for a few days, then pick it back up. Their where some areas that captured me and others no so much. I wasn’t as engrossed in this novel as I have been with her previous work.

In Unearthed we are introduced to a verity of characters. Their are several different kinds of Fae and concepts of Death. I like the verity, but at times it got to be a bit overwhelming; especially with Death. It sounded like some aspects of Death are good and some are bad, yet by the end the author made it sound like all the different kinds of Death where/are out to kill Olivia; expect Ryker who will protect her.

We meet our heroine, Olivia, right off the bat. She’s a Pixie with no wings and no magic, or so she thinks. She’s lovable, slightly clumsy, and has this spark, but she has this habit of fainting/blacking out when things got rough. This happened a few times in the story during the height of a battle scene and then we are moving onto the next day or a few hours later. I didn’t care for the fade to black moments.

Ryker our hero, is The Grime Reaper, Ankou, aka King of the Dead. He’s sexy and has this bad boy vibe going. He helps Olivia train and becomes her protecter. In return he want’s her to end his life. He’s been the Ankou far longer then was meant to be and the long life has taken it’s toll on him.

The background was interesting and I liked the premise, but I really needed some elaboration on what actually happened in Fae to make all the Fairy’s leave and come to earth to hid among the humans.

We are also treated to a few surprises along the way and the action scenes are fast paced. We also get some tender moments, but I wouldn’t call this novel a romance. At least not yet, but their is the possibility.

Unearthed is well written, with moments of very realistic humor, but overall, it was just ok. If you enjoy stories about Fae and magic then this is series might be up your alley.
