Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

The premise of this book really intrigued me but I felt it was such an average read unfortunately. I wanted more. Sorry 3 🌟

I found the pace quite slow until near the end but there were lots of twists and turns to move the plot along. I would have preferred a faster pace though.

The sheer volume of twists and turns in this book make it difficult to review without giving away any spoilers. Suffice to say that if someone offers you money to pretend to be their dead sister so they can claim an inheritance, you'd be better off saying no and running away as fast as your little legs can carry you...

Exciting and gripping, I loved discovering who was the Better Liar.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC without obligation.

Thank you Random House and Netgalley for this book.
I wondered whether to give feedback or not as I didn't really enjoy this book.
I didn't find it to be a psychological thriller and to be honest, I was bored. I also guessed the plot etc within the few fifth of the book which didn't help. This really wasn't one for me hence 2 stars - my opinion only.

This is a psychological thriller filled with mystery and surprises.
The pacing was a bit slow but it still had intrigue.
The ending was epic and memorable.
A brilliant book

So... I predicted the plot of the entire book in 7 pages. And I really did not like the writing style. This... did not go the way I had planned. At all. I mean, nobody plans to figure out a plot in 7 pages. Anyway... the story really just did not interest me. It was a dissatisfactory ending, with so many plot holes. Plotwise, not my thing at all. Writing-wise, also not my thing.

Apart from the ending, I didn't like anything about this book.

The characters are all vile. The plot, I think, could have been really good but it just misses the mark for me.

This book gripped me from the start! We begin with Leslie finding her sister dead and the introduction of Mary in the first few pages and from then on you know it is going to be an intriguing read. Both women have problems in their lives that they need to sort out and with secrets of their own, the money left by their dad seems like the only solution.
But who is the better liar? The book kept me on the edge throughout and the last 20% with the big reveal is crazy, I couldn't put the book down! I really enjoyed this read and it is perfect for anyone who loves thrillers with a big twist.

This is a good plot, interesting characters & satisfying end, yet I have so many issues with the writing style. I just couldn’t gel with the narrative which made the story feel quite flat. I think the idea is great but could have been executed better. Some may enjoy this for the twists & turns but it’s not really for me

The Better Liar is a twisty psychological read which is told through multiple narratives, all by narrators who don’t seem to be completely honest…

At the start of the book we see Leslie going to visit her sister Robin, who she hasn’t seen in years, and finding her dead in her room. After fleeing the scene in shock, she meets a lady called Mary who looks like Robin, and asks her to pretend to be Robin in order to claim the inheritance their dead father has left to them, which can only be accessed by Leslie if both sisters are there in person.

The book is split into three perspectives, which do jump around in terms of timeframe, moving from the present day back to long before Leslie discovered Robin’s body. Therefore we read Leslie’s perspective, that of her ‘fake’ sister Mary, and some chapters from Robin’s point of view, so we can better understand the events leading up to her death. I loved this switching of views; it offered a bit more mystery and confusion as you’re never sure who is the most ‘reliable’ of the narrators (as hinted at by the title of this novel). Also, I found I didn’t hugely connect with Leslie or Robin, but Mary felt a lot more engaging as a character, so it was nice to see different perspectives, not just Leslie’s.

There’s some dark parts to this story, and lots of secrets. I really enjoyed reading The Better Liar – it’s clever, twisted and, most of all, an entertaining read.

The Better Liar by Tanen Jones is a good old escapist thriller with a great hook. Leslie and Robin are estranged sisters, Leslie has been the good one, the one who worked hard and did everything the right way, whilst Robin is the wild child who ran away as a teen never to be heard of again. When their father dies Leslie is aghast to discover that despite being the one who has cared for him in his final years, she will not acquire her share of his inheritance without Robin. His final bequest is for her to find Robin and only then will they both receive what they are due.

Tracking her sister down to Las Vegas she visits her apartment only to find Robin dead on her bed from a drug overdose. She has been living under a false name and so, when Leslie meets a young woman, Mary, who is similar to Robin she hatches a plan. Mary will pretend to Robin and the inheritance will be hers. Of course things don’t run quite that smoothly.

Like all great crime and thriller books it has a lot going on under the surface. In this case it explores family, not only the relationship between two sisters but also motherhood and marriage. Tanen Jones uses some clever narrative devices with flashbacks to Robin’s youth giving us an insight into what sort of person Robin was. It also allows us to see the complexity of sibling relationships with Leslie’s resentment at being the one left behind seeping from the pages.

But is Leslie keeping her own secrets? She is an excellent unreliable narrator and I didn’t ever quite know who or what to trust. It makes for a tense and nail biting read and is excellently plotted. I love a book which knocks me off kilter and this one does it in spades.

This is a real page turner of a book. It’s hard to review without accidentally revealing spoilers as it is one of those books where you think you know all the answers and then the rug is pulled out from under you. Its pacing, clues, titbits and red herrings are perfectly pitched and I found myself unable to put it down.It is wonderfully entertaining and the perfect escapist read.

Twisty tale of sisters and you are going on a rollercoaster with them. 2 sisters with different names. And a 3rd one too. Confused? Well read this and the riddle will be answered! Clever stuff.

An easy to read, entertaining psychological thriller with unlikeable characters. Well-paced and engaging overall.

Couldn't get into this book and I did try! Think the flow of the story and the way it was written was difficult for me. That does not necessarily mean its a bad read, just not for. me. There are some fantastic reviews for it but sadly not my kind of read.

Thank you Random House and NetGalley.
