Argh!!! Who hasn't envisaged all kinds of murderous scenarios when confronted with overly loud and inconsiderate neighbours. O'Neill's ode to the streets of Edinburgh is more of a mysterious who-dunnit than a devilishly thriller, but it was still a very entertaining quick read. Lol. Only the devil could afford to live in Dean's Village!

Thank you to Netgalley and Black & White Publishing for the copy.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to read and review this book.

After losing and replacing my broken Kindle and getting a new phone I was unable to download the title again for review as it was no longer available on Netgalley.

I’m really sorry about this and hope that it won’t affect you allowing me to read and review your titles in the future.

Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Natalie.

The title is very self explanatory relating to this very unusual story. Have not read any books about evil for a long time.
Cat moves from Miami to Scotland.
She has a very noisy upstair neighbour and Cat is not sleeping and getting on with life at all.
Her friend introduces her to people who say they can make her neighbour go away, she attends a meeting and her neighbour is killed.
From then on strange things are happening in her life, and life gets even harder when a new man moves In upstairs, is he the devil?

Cat (Catriona), an American, transfers to Edinburgh after getting into a spot of bother at work. She finds what she thinks is the perfect place to live, which is when things begin to go wrong. I found this to be quite bizarre, one minute Cat’s investigating and the next she’s part of some sort of coven. Somehow I don’t think the reader is meant to chortle, but be spooked by the goings on. Sorry but I laughed my way through this story, it was hilarious! Loved the Edinburgh descriptions, the book was worth reading for those alone. I hope Cat will have a few more adventures!

Really dont like to say this about a book but I didnt really like it at all. From the beginning it was a little odd. The characters were bland, there was no real interest and nothing seemed to connect. The neighbour upstairs is noisy as hell and Cat does everything she can to reason with him but all falls on deaf ears. Then she asks a friend for help.....which then leads to witches and devils and thats when it lost me completely. I found it boring and no real story to it. Made no sense at all. I'm sure this would be to others tastes but it definitely wasnt for me

Another new to me author and set in Edinburgh too, I welcomed the chance to read this one!

The book starts fairly innocuously and soon turns into a dark, twisting story. Cat moves from America to Edinburgh to take up a new job. Here she manages to secure a lovely flat in a nice part of Edinburgh, only to find she is living with the devil upstairs; Tur-Moyle! He begins to affect all aspects of her life until things take a dark turn.

The plot keeps you intrigued, with lots of twists and turns along the way. O’Neill writes well and I like how he conveyed the different characters throughout the book - you really sympathise with Cat and I loved the character of Agnes too! The author uses humour well too and I found myself laughing out loud at times.

The end is different and unexpected, although I haven’t read any books before that touch upon some of the areas this book does. It’s very much a story of be careful what you wish for... and this keeps it so intriguing and different!

The Devil Upstairs Review by Kelly Lacey

Anthony O’ Neill released Dr Jekyll & Mr Seek last year with Black & White Publishing and I adored it. So when the chance came to review The Devil Upstairs Mr O’Neills latest venture I jumped at the chance.

If you follow the blog regularly you will see that we have a variety of genres but not any horror. I am just very easily scared and because I immerse myself in my books the horror variety can often disturb my mind and I’m haunted by nightmares etc for days.

So a book called The Devil Upstairs is not going to be about kittens and rainbows. I knew that off the bat. But I threw my rulebook out the window and dived in and I am so glad that I did.

In the book, we meet Cat Thomas who has recently relocated to Scotland after unfortunate events back in the USA. She finds a gorgeous apartment in the Dean Village and begins her beautiful new life peacefully. That is until the neighbour above her decides to accent her life with a soundtrack of unnecessary nerve-wracking noise. Driving Cat into spiralling madness with lack of sleep and as her life falls apart again will her friend Agnes hold the invitation that will make life easier again?

With beautiful Edinburgh as the backdrop for Cat Thomas’s story, it accents it perfectly with the history and creepiness pouring from every nook and cranny. Cat Thomas is a likeable and relatable character. The story flows quickly it is definitely in the category of one more chapter. I read it in one sitting. It is not filled with gory horror scenes (thank goodness). It is more of the psychological variety.

I highly recommend The Devil Upstairs by Anthony O’Neill. A creative read with Edinburgh as a supporting cast member. A must-read for anyone looking to be challenged and excited by a fast-paced plot and incredible writing.

Okay so while the plot sounds interesting The Devil Upstairs wasn’t one of those synopsis’ I read and thought “I need to read this”, but I’m so glad I did. I was absolutely obsessed while reading this, I couldn’t talk about anything else and now even my local shopkeeper knows how great this book is!

Putting a modern spin on satanism and succeeding is something to be proud of, well done Anthony! I’ve been thrilled and chilled! Dark, addictive and memorising this is a must read.

Cat Thomas has moved to Edinburgh, from Florida. She has found the perfect flat and for a while it is an idyll. But then her neighbour comes home and Dylan Moyle or Tur-Moyle as he is known, makes her life hell. Constant noise all night to the extent she spends some nights in a nearby hotel, just to get some sleep.

She’s started her new job, as a fraud investigator for ABC bank and is befriended by Agnes, a fiery Scot with a penchant for the Goth. Chatting about witches and general spooky stuff, Agnes invites Cat to a get together of her group, the conclave, for a game.

Tired and stressed, Cat agrees….takes part in a weird aptitude test, while drinking Irn-Bru and breathing in sulphurous air…….just who is sitting in the velvety blackness?

She wakes up in her own bed, not really knowing what’s going on…Agnes says she was just drunk! But then Tur-Moyle is found dead in the flat upstairs, torn apart! There are more murders, anyone who upsets or threatens Cat, seems to end up dead.

What follows is a clever mix of Ira Levin and Dennis Wheatley, with strange violent events, a charming, mysterious new neighbour and creepy, whispering ‘tourists’…..

This captures the damp, foggy atmosphere of a chilly Edinburgh, and the general inconsiderate nature of some people in general……a chilling reminder of Be Careful What You Wish For and its consequences…utterly brilliant.

My thanks to Black & White Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this for free. This is my honest and unbiased review.

My Rating 4.5 stars
The Devil Upstairs is a dark yet intriguing read with a gripping and entertaining plot that I just couldn’t get enough of. It was well written and had some had great characters which I felt were very well written and developed. I really felt for the main character Cat, who was having a trouble with a noisy neighbour, especially as I myself, can hear nearly everything our neighbour does through the walls of our house, and it can be very frustrating and while you’re trying to get some good sleep.

There are some really cleverly written twists that I wasn’t expecting at all, and the ending was really good and satisfying.

This was such a fab read. It had me hooked right from the start. This was my first book by Anthony O’Neill and if his other books are like this one then definitely won’t be my last.

If you love a good dark suspense novel with a chilling plot I think this would be an ideal read.

I would like to thank Jaz at Black & White Publishing for sending me both and eBook through NetGalley and a physical hardback copy in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Dark suspense and a chilling premise which was executed well. What happens when a neighbour is making life unbearable? When that neighbour simply doesn't care? Well - ask for help of course! Protagonist, Cat Thomas, is in exactly that predicament. When she asks for help she gets way more than she bargained for. A thoroughly entertaining, imaginative read with twists and turns aplenty.

I was really pleased to receive a copy of 'The Devil Upstairs' to review, with thanks to Black & White Publishing and of course, the author Anthony O'Neill. Once I started reading, I was hooked straight away into our protagonist's relocation from a lifetime in Florida, to a completely contrasting environment of Edinburgh city.

Cat Thomas, after facing death threats as part of her fraud investigation work, is now based in a two-bedroom flat in a converted 18th century building - everything begins perfectly until the tenant of the flat above comes back. She is faced with the neighbour from hell who is loud, inconsiderate and beyond rude; we watch Cat slowly deteriorate from lack of sleep until she despairingly agrees to visit a local witches coven as a potential answer to her hellish neighbour above. Now, this is where things become decidedly strange and the book takes a sharp tonal turn. I quite like the weird and wacky, so I happily read on into a darker territory of suspicions, secrets, odd behaviours, threats and death. It's now a study of Cat's conscience, police investigations, a mysterious new tenant and a building fraud investigation that sets alienates her at work. I was gripped and recommend this book as a quirky creative read.
