The Making of a Mom–This book is hard to read without feeling empathy for Kim Severn, Author, and her husband, Nate. After a very difficult first pregnancy and other health issues after the birth of their son, Kim starts to feel a strong desire to have another child. Devastatingly, because of previous health issues, doctors recommend against another pregnancy. This leads them on an adoption journey.

The story of their adoption process is agonizing. There are many things that don’t feel right to Kim and Nate along the way, but they feel like they have to keep comments to themselves to stay on the good side of the adoption agency. Then, at several crucial times, the adoption agency leaves them on their own to work through issues with their baby’s birth parents. Even though Kim breaks down several times in the course of this process, she is somehow able to remain her composure when it matters most. She puts their daughter’s well-being first, even at the scolding of the adoption agency and the birth parents.

“The Making of a Mom by Severn is a book I have read twice. It is one I will definitely recommend to my friends!” -Green Gables Book Reviews

I was given this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

At times, I found this book interesting but mostly, I just found it frustrating. I don't know if it was the author's tone or the editing but it did not feel like a cohesive story. This was a shame as this had the potential to be a look with a lot of impact.

This book was alternately frustrating, empowering, and encouraging. When, due to complications of her first pregnancy, Kim and her husband decided to pursue adoption as the way to enlarge their family, they had no idea what lay in store for them along the way.
Their joys and sorrows as they sought to add a second child to their family, took me right along with them on their roller coaster of emotions.
Their perseverance, throughout the relentless surprises that they continually encountered along the way, (most of them not good surprises), brought out the cheerleader in me for them. It also brought into focus, all of the unforeseen trials and tribulations that can await those that enter into open adoptions. Kim became a powerful force to be reckoned with, once she tired of being manipulated, at will, for the sake of others' convenience, and became a mama bear protecting her cub. I found myself up reading this book in the wee hours of the morning because I just needed to know how it all ended. I applaud the Severn family for their fortitude, and I'm certain the Rhys will love hearing the story, as she grows up, of how she became a Severn. I highly recommend this book for anyone considering an open adoption, as it will definitely shed light on what one might encounter along the journey.

What a journey this family has gone thru to complete their family. In depth and comprehensive this book delves into it all. I was taken aback how author talked negatively about her daughters birth parents.

Thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book. While I got the book for free, it had no bearing on the rating I gave it.
