I was a little disappointed by this book, I found it hard to get into at first. The characters were okay, the story itself was good and the style of writing was perfect. I have read many books by this author and I have really enjoyed them all.. looking forward for the next one out.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a honest review.

A good read, which kept my attention throughout. I would recommend this as a good holiday reading book. Very enjoyable.

Even good people are drawn to do evil things ... Twelve-year-old Rain Winter narrowly escaped an abduction while walking to a friend's house. Her two best friends, Tess and Hank, were not as lucky. Tess never came home, and Hank was held in captivity before managing to escape. Their abductor was sent to prison but years later was released. Then someone delivered real justice--and killed him in cold blood.

Now Rain is living the perfect suburban life, her dark childhood buried deep. She spends her days as a stay-at-home mom, having put aside her career as a hard-hitting journalist to care for her infant daughter. But when another brutal murderer who escaped justice is found dead, Rain is unexpectedly drawn into the case. Eerie similarities to the murder of her friends' abductor force Rain to revisit memories she's worked hard to leave behind. Is there a vigilante at work? Who is the next target? Why can't Rain just let it go?

Brilliant, couldn't put it down! Can't wait to read more from the author in the future. So gripping.

Rain and Hank are both victims of a murder/abduction when they were 12, the Man responsible was found not guilty and was later released from the psychiatric unit that was treating him only for him to be murdered in a similar way to how he killed. No evidence was left and the case went cold. Years later there are other similar murders of murderers who have been found not guilty. Rain now a journalist is reporting on a link and has to open up lots of memories to do this with a twist to the plot at the end.
This is a great book although being highly descriptive it was too long and found it could have been cut in places. Another great book by Lisa Unger and well worth the read.

I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was the first time I have read anything from this author, and honestly I didn't don't know what to think about this one.
I'm in two minds.
I enjoyed the premise of the story. Adults attempting to still move on and get answers for a childhood traumatic incident. I feel a lot of sympathy for the characters and was disheartened by their childhood trauma.
However, the story was just delivered a little slower than I would of liked. It wasn't boring, but I wasn't excited about reading more. And honestly, I was left feeling rather unsatisfied by the ending!
About to start Lisa's newest read so hopefully I enjoy it more.

Oh my word this book was just outstanding. Everything about this book I just loved and couldn’t turn the pages quick enough . A tense and thrilling read.

I really enjoyed this book, it’s about how something that happened before can go on and affect you forever afterwards. Big fan of Lisa Unger, this one didn’t disappoint.

I didn't really like it, didn't really hate it. Hence the three stars. I zoned out on numerous occasions and found it a bit slow at times.

There was nothing surprising for me and to be honest if you asked me in a few weeks (even days perhaps) I'd have no idea what this book was about or wouldn't even be able to name a character.

So in conclusion - a predictable, slow burning and easily forgettable thriller among others.

Oops.

What a nice find. This was the first book I've read from this author and I really enjoyed it. The story was different from anything I've read recently and really captured my attention. It was so well written and the characters were fantastic.

I overall enjoyed this book. First book I read by the author.

It definitely has a twist I wasn't expecting. And the end was very clean and with no much consequences.

Had some problem "getting" the plot. Some parts felt inconclusive.

2 stars because I enjoyed Lisa Unger's writing and concept, it was a fun read but I did have a few problems with this book. Firstly was the fact that it was referred to someone as having an IQ of about 70-not disabled but able to comprehend about as much as a twelve year old. Like surely this is offence? Also the whole plot was laid out for you, nothing was thrilling or surprising in this read, you really don't have to read to the end to find a twist because there is none, I think there could have been but it wasn't executed well at all and the ending fell flat, I felt like there were pages missing.. Surely there could have been more to this story.

Rain Winter left journalism behind to focus on her baby daughter. But when a man acquitted for murder is killed, in the same way as his suspected victims, Rain sees a pattern emerging between a series of cold cases. This was my first Lisa Unger book and despite being excited by the synopsis, this book fell short for me.

The idea behind the story is good and there are lots of moments full of suspense and mystery. I loved how Rain’s past is not apparent at the beginning of the book, but as we read on it we see how it begins to intermingle with the cold cases. There were lots of twists along the way, but I felt that the story was quite slow at times and repetitive. Saying that, I did want to keep reading and find out how things would come together and felt the book had a satisfying ending.

Thank you to NetGalley and publisher for this advanced copy.
This is the first book I have read by Lisa Unger and however hard I tried I just couldn't get into this book.
I was so interested when I first read about it, but it was too slow in places and didn't focus enough on all of the characters.

A dark psychological thriller that completely transcends the genre. Rain is the journalist on maternity leave who is sucked back into the thrill of the chase for a story when a man accused of murdering his family (but acquitted) is killed in the same way. There appear to be no leads, but Rain is closer to the story than it seems, and as she digs in further to the story shocking events in her past are brought to light. Everyone she knows is hiding something and even Rain herself has secrets that she does not want to come to light.

It is a harrowing tale of lost innocence and childhood bonds that were forged in tragedy. Interesting questions are posed about justice and morality that at times make for uncomfortable, but completely gripping reading. Lisa Unger is at the top of her game with this book and if you have enjoyed any of her previous books I would urge you to give this a go.

Couldn't get into this, it sounded really good when I first heard about it but it was slow in places and spent too much time focusing on the main character. It was also confusing to me because it used other peoples perspectives but it wasn't clear enough who it was

Rain Winter resigned from her high pressure career as an investigative journalist when she had her daughter, Lily,
Rain finds herself drawn into a new murder case that could be linked to her past.
I could not put this book down. I needed to know what had happened to Rain and her friends as children. The tension builds as each chapter progresses. The plot was brilliant, nobody could guess the ending.
I have not read any books by this author before. I was extremely impressed and will be looking for more.

Thanks to Netgalley and HQ for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Raine is a stay at home mom and previous news lady. When she was a teenager, her best friends were abducted and she escaped. One died and one was never the same. Now, itching to get back into the news, she decides to tell her story.

This book was really boring for me. I have loved some Lisa Unger books and not liked others. This one falls in the latter category. I just could NOT get into it. There was nothing interesting here, it just dragged. I didn’t give it a 1-2 star cause those are reserved for truly awful books but this one wasn’t good in my opinion.

Lisa Unger is a new name for me in the mystery/thriller genre, and after reading 'The Stranger Inside', I will seek out other titles by this talented author. If this book is anything to go by Lisa deserves the many plaudits she has received for her previous books. This is a particularly atmospheric, psychological thriller involving the main protagonist of the story, Rain Winter, a journalist, investigating what she believes are a series of linked cold cases. Veering between past and present in the narrative, a plot device I particularly enjoyed, Unger ratchets up the tension to her big reveal in the final denouement of the novel. This was particularly satisfying, when with many novels the journey so to speak is often better than the destination. Not with Unger's narrative; which was taut, twisty and well-plotted.

A satisfying read that kept me entertained and interested throughout.

Summary:
Rain Winter left journalism behind to focus on her baby daughter. But when a man acquitted for murder is killed, in the same way as his suspected victims, Rain sees a pattern emerging between a series of cold cases.
Meticulous and untraceable, this killer strikes in the dead of night, making sure that the guilty are suitably punished for their crimes.
As Rain’s investigation deepens, she must face up to dark secrets in her own past and the realisation that the killer may be closer than she thinks…

There were several points when i wanted to give up reading this but i pushed on, hoping it would be worth it but unfortunately it wasn't. The story didn't seem to go anywhere and none of the characters were likable. It just didn't seem like a clear, cohesive story and there was a lot of unanswered questions.
