Finding one’s self in an unimaginable time

Karis found herself in an unimaginable time. All of her friends and co-workers have perished from the strange “Flu” that is spreading across the states. She has barricaded herself in her apartment with her dog Zeke.

She is afraid to go outside, she begins to here strange noises and to imagine things. She goes over her life and her relationships and wonders what went wrong and why she is still alone at 38.

Her only contact is over the rooftops and through windows talking to two young girls taking care of their sick mother in another apartment building. Then the mother dies from the flu and one by one the girls die from the flu. Karis is now alone with only a phone call to her mother and her dog Zeke. Then the lights go off, the water is turned off and there is no heat and nowhere to get food or supplies.

The only way out is to find a car that works and escape to the west which is still an unaffected zone.

Will she make it out alive? Will she perish in New York in her apartment? The answers are in the book. Pick up a copy today, you will enjoy it. I recommend this book.

Thanks to Nicole Mabry, Red Adept Publishing, LLC, and NetGalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of the book.

Past This Point reminds me of Stations Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel in all the good ways.

Karis Hylen survived tragedy only because she gave up on society. That’s what makes this story so appealing: she survived based on a decision that had nothing to do with what she would eventually encounter. Kind of like that feeling you have when your cat throws up and in the time you take to clean up the mess you miss your plane and the plane lands in the Pacific and there are no survivors.

Nicole Mabry takes an apocalyptic scenario and makes you feel the heat. This book has everything: a strong protagonist, grief, hardship, hope. She gives us every reason to pick up it up and read it right to the end.

Thank you Net Galley for allowing me to read this book.

I really enjoyed this book as I could relate so well with Karis. I found I felt as though I were going through the adventure myself and it brought all the fear I have of medical issues plus being alone. It's a fast moving story which kept me turning pages to see what next happens. Karis is with her dog when a virus takes over N.Y. and she's stranded alone, watching as her food supply dwindles and apprehension starts working on her own mental state. This is a book many will relate to for various reasons, be it a past fearful experience, an emotional tug for Karis, a fear of viruses, not trusting others or just the story alone. Let's not forget Zeke, her dog, her companion as they battle to get to a safe area. I wish to thank Nicole Mabry and Red Adept Publishing for giving me the chance to enjoy this book.

After reading the reviews and the synopsis of the plot, I was really excited to begin this book ! Everything got off to a great start – who doesn't love a great apocalyptic novel ? I like the author's writing style , but somewhere along the way as the plot unfolded it felt like there were too many elements crammed into this plot. I was a little disappointed that the main character was not as brave and resourceful as I had hoped for , and the romance that occurred later in the book was just a little too perfect for the situation. Although it did make for some interesting diversions from the main plot.

This was not at all a bad read , but I did not enjoy it as much as I had hoped for. I do look forward to another book from this offer , however.

This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I love apocalyptic storylines, but most books were written for and about hound adults. This one isn’t, that’s a nice change.
Karis, the main character, is a troubled woman in her thirties (aren’t we all?). She gets stuck in NYC after a deadly virus breaks out. She is confined to her apartment building for months. You would think this wouldn’t make a compelling read, but it does. She makes friends with neighbouring girls, and helps them. In turn they help her grow as a person too.
I don’t want to give too much of this story away, you should just read it. It’s female empowerment at its finest.

And the cover, come on, it’s so beautiful!
To me this book read like it would make an amazing movie. Bearing in mind the book will always be better.

Karis Hylen lives in New York City with her dog Zeke. She leads a reclusive lifestyle, having been hurt in her last relationships.
When a super flu virus spreads through the city, killing most of the population, she is isolated in her apartment, the area now a quarantine zone.
With only Zeke for company, occasional phone calls to her mom, and chats through the windows with two young girls living across the way, Karis fights to maintain her sanity through the crazy times.
She learns to be strong and self sufficient, foraging for food, protecting herself from bands of marauders as provisions diminish.
One day she notices a man outside, being beaten by a group as they steal his back pack and then leave him for dead. But Karis sees that he is still breathing and gathers her courage to bring him inside to her place.
At first, as Ollie is healing from his wounds, she ties him up, not sure if he is a good person. But he slowly gains her trust, and their feelings for each other becoming stronger each day.
They make a plan to travel to the quarantine border, knowing they only have each other to rely on. Will Karis and Ollie make it to safety? Will she have her heart broken once again?
This apocalyptic thriller with a dash of romance was entertaining and engaging, with a believable storyline.
I loved Karis, with her strong character and her devotion to her dog Zeke.

I really loved this book! Karis and her dog Zeke are trapped inside her NYC apartment building when a pandemic hits and it's not safe to go outside. As more people die or leave the city, resources get scarce and Karis gets more and more concerned for her safety. She the more days she spends alone, the more and more stir crazy she gets until it becomes obvious that she will need to get out of the city if she has any hope of survival. The main character was smart and resourceful, but also rightfully scared of what was going on around her. I really enjoyed the adventure and would read more by this author.

I loved this book. I couldn’t stop reading it! I also found it very scary. The protagonist, Karis, is a New Yorker who has had one bad break-up too many. She quits going out and quits seeing her friends, and therefore doesn’t get sick when a deadly virus is released in New York City. Due to a series of events, Karis doesn’t make it out of the hot zone in time. She is stuck in her apartment as what’s left of society in the walled-off, infected half of the country completely breaks down. She and her dog Zeke are on their own in her apartment building as the city dies around them.
