This was a truly wonderful read – how did I miss this book when it was first released! It’s the story of Jess who, on the day of her mother’s funeral, finds a box of unopened letters addressed to her in her mother’s attic. The letters are from Jess’s first love, Joe who walked away from her 17 years previously. Jess is desperate to find out the truth as to what happened and enlists the help of her cousin, Michael and her friend, Belinda to help find Joe.

It didn’t take long for the tears to come flowing with this book – make sure you have some tissues as I’m sure I was crying only a couple of pages in. Jess is a lovely character and one which I connected with straight away. Not only having to contend with her mother’s funeral but finding out that she was lied to so many years before was devastating for her. I loved how you never really knew how this story was going to end up. Whilst searching for Joe, Jess comes across so many obstacles, barriers and dead ends that you couldn’t see there being any way to finding him. But, despite all those things, she gets to meet (and we do as well!) some amazing people who also knew Joe and who reaffirm just what a wonderful person he was! (Now do you understand why you’d need a full box of tissues!).

The story takes us on a rollercoaster of emotions, across different countries and places, each with their own special piece of Joe left behind at! It’s a crazy road trip, with her friend Belinda and cousin Michael, and it’s filled with lots of fun and laughter alongside all the tears! I love both Belinda and Michael’s characters equally and loved them even more when they were together! I will stop even trying to talk about the book now for fear of giving away any spoilers, but it’s safe to say this is such a fantastic read…one of my favourite books in a very long time! Completely heart-breaking but totally and utterly heart-warming. It’s all about family, friendships, loss, love, forgiveness and putting the past to bed. Fab, fab, fab!

I really enjoyed reading Maybe One Day, it's a heartfelt story that really captured my attention. I loved that it was well balanced, it was quite a sad story that had me shed a few tears but at the same time it was also life-affirming and inspirational. It's always good to be reminded that life is worth living.

Plus, I loved the sense of mystery and how easy it was to relate to our main character, Jess. She was such an interesting character, and I loved following her in her adventures to rediscover a past of her past. I think the author kept us in our toes for most of the story as you never knew what Jess was going to discover next and I enjoyed being surprised more than once.

All in all, a beautiful story with interesting characters that take you to lots of different places, both physically and mentally.

Unfortunately, I didn’t give this book the attention it deserved. I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump for the last month and have just struggled to read anything. I really like Debbie Johnson, and have read the majority of their books, but I just didn’t read this one properly and that is absolutely no reflection on the book. I took me about 2 weeks to read the first 61% but then I finally sat and read the rest in one evening and I’m really sad that I didn’t give I the attention it needed. I did enjoy the story and hopefully one day I’ll read it again.

OMG WOW! what an emotional rollercoaster. On the day of Jess’ mums funeral Jess clears the loft and comes across a box of letters and cards. They are from her childhood sweetheart Joe, and have been hidden away by her parents. This is the story of Jess piecing her life back together again. I was in floods when I find out what had caused Jess’ breakdown and the reason this young couple had been apart.

Jess is reeling after finding a box of letters in her mother’s attic from her first love, believing he had left her without a thought 17 years ago.
Jess and her cousin embark on a journey trying to follow the old faded postmarks on the letters to trace her long lost love.
I loved the adventure and hope this evoked, I was with Jess as she goes through the wringer talking about the past to try and find her future.

I was delighted to be sent an Arc of this but I had problems with my e-reader from March onwards so I didn't manage to finish reading it. :(
Thank you Netgalley for the free eArc in exchange for an honest review.

This is a fine example of the type of poignant love story Debbie Johnson excels in. She weaves together romance and heartbreak with just enough humour to ensure that the reader can laugh through their tears all the while crossing their fingers for a happy ending. In this book she only gives away Jess and Joe's back story a little at a time which keeps the reader addictively turning the pages to find out whether or not this tragic couple can find each other again. I would advise a large bar of chocolate and a box of tissues would be good accompaniments for this book.

What an emotional rollercoaster this book was! From beginning to end it toys with your emotions and on more than one occasion there were a few hold your breath moments.

Jess is in her late thirties and has just attended the funeral of her mother - a woman whom she loved but who was very much of the stuff upper lip variety. Her mother was protective of her and Jess often saw this as stifling and controlling.

The funeral is attended only by Jess, her and uncle and her younger cousin (Michael). Afterwards, Michael offers Jess a lift home staying for a while and together they decide to start clearing out some of the clutter that lies within the house. They start in the attic, a place Jess didn’t venture to very often and come across all matter of things: her mother’s old sewing machine; photographs; cookery books etc. etc.

They move on to a different section of the attic and amongst other things find an old shoebox. The shoebox is packed with cards and letters from the love of Jess’ life, Joe. We learn that there was an accident in which their young daughter Grace died and Jess shortly afterwards had a complete breakdown which resulted in her being admitted to hospital. Jess’ parents told her that Joe couldn’t cope and had left her and now 17 years later she finds that this wasn’t true and that all this time they had been keeping him away from her.

What happens next is Jess, Michael and an old friend Belinda embarking on a journey across the U.K. and Ireland in a bid to retrace Joe’s steps and discover what had happened to him. Along the way they meet an array of characters who add to the story.

This book was not a typical Debbie Johnson book but it was amazing and I don’t think anything I say will convey just how good it is. I loved every minute of it.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced read copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Maybe One Day by Debbie Johnson is a beautifully written and poignant story of lost love that’s overflowing with a sense of hope and new beginnings. It is an exceptional read that captured my imagination from the very first page and didn’t let go until the final, heartachingly moving page had been turned – and I loved every word of it!

Jess has never forgotten the man who disappeared from her life seventeen years ago, so when she discovers a hidden box of letters in her mother’s attic, she’s shocked to discover the truth of why he walked away from her so abruptly. Determined to put things right Jess sets out on a journey that takes her across the country, with each new clue bringing her closer to the man who once broke her heart. But not only will this journey lead Jess to her lost love, it will also teach her things about herself that she would never have expected it to.

Maybe One Day is an emotional rollercoaster of a read that takes you on a journey that encompasses everything from laugh out loud funny moments to desperately sad and heartbreaking events that are filled with a poignancy that take your breath away. With a cast of characters you can’t help but fall in love with, this is a book that has a depth to it I didn’t expect. Debbie Johnson has written a moving story that’s full of both shade and light, plucking at your heartstrings as you’re swept along on Jess’s journey, making you experience every emotion right along with her.

A beautiful and poignant story I would highly recommend.

A very clever and moving novel.

I've read a number of Ms Johnson's books but this one deeply affected me, emotionally. This is the story of a women who suffers a breakdown triggered by a deep, personal loss and the story of her search for the one person she was always able to depend upon. Through it, she learns the truth, no matter how hard it is and further, to cope with the pain it causes her. The journey she decides to take is not alone, but with friends, old and new to help her.

I refuse to say a jot more about the story as you must read this for yourself. I'm not ashamed to state that I had tears in my eyes as I read, more than once.

My thanks to Netgalley and Orion for the reading copy!

Another great book by Debbie Johnson. This was another quick read which kept me hooked right to the end. Jess’ world broke apart when an accident caused her to lose her daughter and become separated from the love of her life. She recovered as best she could with her life changing once her mother died.

I simply adored this story and very much enjoyed working through the journey of Joe over the years with Jess. Just simply a lovely story that was written with lots of compassion, love and hope. Just what I needed to read during lockdown.

Thank you to NetGalley & publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a honest review.

I feel a bit torn rating this book. On the one hand, I always say that every trope and storyline can be interesting as long as there is a new spin to it. And while I enjoyed Johnson's writing (it felt very fluid), the story just - lacked originality. Or at least something innovative so I wouldn't go through every chapter thinking "Well, I've read this a dozen times but I liked it way more when X did that". So, yeah. Maybe this storyline just didn't work for me?
I do want to pick up another of Johnson's books up, though, because the writing really was immersive.

As with all of Debbie Johnson's books this was a great read and was easy to fly through. It was emotional and without giving anything away I was kept on the edge of my seat throughout wanting to see how the characters had developed. Less romantic that other books that I've read by this author but I really enjoyed this new style of writing.

Jess comes from a family with a stiff upper lip, one where emotions and feelings are things that are not talked about or expressed. The story starts as Jess attends her mother's funeral. A small, unemotional affair with no wake or celebration of life afterwards. Simply returning home with her cousin they decide after a pink gin or two to start clearing some of the items on the house.

Starting in the attic which was her mother's place for hiding things away. They discover a box full of cards, postcards and letters. Which after confessing to her younger cousin about a daughter he knew nothing about. Along with a period of time in a mental hospital. Sparks a journey of finding the love of her life, who she thought had left her abandoned her. However, her parents had kept him away whilst she was ill.

Retracing the places he had sent letters from she embarks on a road trip to see what happened to him.

One to read with tissues handy as you learn about Jess and Joe's hardships. As well as what has happened in the seventeen years since she last saw him.
