A fast paced exciting novel with a great story. My first read by Jessie Keane and I enjoyed the writing style. Thanks for the opportunity to read

I hadn't read Jessie Keane before, but I'm so glad I gave this a go!

This gangland novel focuses on Dora O'Brien, a woman from a stable background who falls in with a bad crowd, driving her to prostitution, drunk and drugs. When she has a daughter, Angel is born to a tough life which pushes her to do whatever it takes to defend herself and those she loves.

Written in a short, punchy style, this book has you wanting to read just one more page and just one more and one more...

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC without obligation.

Easily another outstanding read by this very talented author. I absolultly love the books by this author and with each and every one of them, as soon as i start it, i'm lost. Lost into a world that is so far away from our own, but so exciting to be a part of through these books.
This author does not dissapoint. ever.

This was a gritty gripping gangland thriller which I enjoyed. The narrative was fabulous and what the book of this genre needed and the characters written well.

If you like gangland chick novels then this is for you. Dora O'Brien gets mixed up with a gangster at a young age, who then takes the rap for his bosses murder. When Dora is pressured into testifying by a bent copper, her life goes from bad to worse, as he keeps her for himself so he can abuse Dora and subsequently her daughter, as a punishment for his brother and mothers deaths and the gangland boss promises revenge on her once he gets out.

The story starts in the 50s, moves into the 60s, 70s and finally the 80s and also follows Dora's daughter Angel for some of the story.

Quite a long read, but definitely enjoyable.

I received this book from netgalley in return for a honest review

Dorie O’Brien was born blessed in the looks department and a mother that would give her anything she desired. However her nature is not nice and before long she is involved with the wrong kind of men, crime, prostitution, drugs and alcohol. This book tells the tale of her downfall in life and is a must read!

Many thanks to the publishers and netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

Jessie Keane is an amazing writer for this genre and I was so excited to start reading this.
Dora O’Brien has a good upbringing but she gets involved with the wrong men! She quickly becomes a prostitute, hooked on alcohol and drugs. She gives birth to a baby girl, Angel. Angel shouldn’t be a bad baby, but when push comes to shove, she is willing to murder
What a great book. I love the underworld and crime books, bit of a break from thrillers every now and then.
This book did not disappoint. With the short chapters, you just can’t put it down.
I warmed so much to Angel and of course, I was happy to see one of my favourite characters, Annie Carter, pop up
This book is perfect for fans of Martina Cole.

I'm a huge fan of gangland thrillers and this one is definitely up there with the best. The story starts with Dora a young beautiful girl that unfortunately meets and falls in love with what can only be described as a lovable rouge, Dora gets sucked into the seedy underworld of London crime and fears for her life when she witnesses a brutal murder.
But this is just part of the story, it goes on to follow the shocking and cruel life Dora is forced to live with her baby Angel.
An excellent gritty book that keeps a good pace and the pages turning.

Dora Obrien is a beautiful child/woman who could have had the world at her feet, until she got involved with small time thug Dickie Cole until he was sent to prison and from there on her life just got worse and more complicated.
Angel, her beautiful daughter, grew up in circumstances that no child should see or hear about. As a teenager it looked as though bent cop Donny Maguire has now set his eyes on her and her path would take the same road as her tormented and desperately unhappy mother.
This is nothing short of an amazing and gripping read. I have only read one other book from this author and I can’t wait to now read more.
Highly recommended.

I love Jessie Keane’s writing and having read all her previous works I snapped this up without reading the blurb and I was not disappointed even though Dora really irritated me!
Thanks to Pan Macmillan for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.

Dora O’Brien had a good start in life, but things went bad when she began to mix with the wrong company. When her daughter Angel is born, Dora is already under the influence of drink and drugs.

Growing up in the shadow of her mother’s abusive relationship, Angel is nothing like her mother, but when matters turn murderous, Angel is forced to grow up fast and survival becomes the name of the game.

This book had me hooked right from the start....I just couldn't put it down! A great story with believable characters. There are plenty of twists and turns to hold your attention and keep you wondering where the story will go next. Another great read from Jessie Keane. Highly recommended.

There are at least 3 other gangland tales out today but no one writes them like Jessie Keane and only The Knock is showing as a number one bestseller. This is up there with her most gripping books and I guarantee once you pick it up there's no putting it back down. It's a gritty, compulsive and authentic portrayal of the criminal underworld's that exist when the day turns to night and the city becomes deserted. If you have enjoyed Ms Keane's books in the past you'll find much to love in this page-turner. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Macmillan UK for an ARC

Dora was not born in a salubrious area and I'm thankful I wasn't born in that nest. Inevitably, she gets into bad company as she's not the sharpest knife in the drawer and pays heavily for it. I had very mixed feelings about this novel. It had a gripping theme and some of the historical references were interesting. What I found daunting is that the novel scanned the years when I was growing up and even though I mixed with people from all walks of life I never heard the F and C-words uttered. For me, that spoilt the book as it felt incongruent, especially in the early part of the book. When those words dipped heavily into the narrative and introspective narrative I began to find it grossly irritating. Thank you to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan.

Dora O’Brien is beautiful, sassy and has always been adored by her mother, much to the chagrin of her two older sisters.
As a teenager Dora falls in with bad company, becomes embroiled in a relationship with a local gangster and finds herself pregnant. After witnessing a serious crime, she ends up in the clutches of the abusive Donny Maguire. Following the birth of her daughter, Dora’s life spirals out of control with the help of alcohol and the abuse continues and is now witnessed by Dora’s daughter, Angel.
Angel grows into a beautiful young lady and soon Donny’s attention moves to her. After the death of her mother, Angel is on her own and the story then focuses on her. Angel must grow up very quickly and finds herself thrown into a dangerous world, thanks to the legacy of her mum.
Jessie Keane is a ‘go to’ author, who you know will always deliver the goods. Her books are powerful, gripping and leave you wanting more. I loved the cameo appearance by Max and Annie Carter and the way that the threads of the story tie together. Another great book with a compelling plot not to be missed.

Wow Jessie has done it again. Written another fantastic book my only complaint is that I couldn’t put it down. It tells the story of Dora O’Brien who spoilt by her Mum as a child ends up getting mixed up with the wrong crowd. Being young and foolish Dora doesn’t really know how to handle when things start to go wrong. Fed up with her airs and graces and her always being put first her sisters wash their hands of her and when she finally plucks up the courage to turn to her family she’s shocked when the door is shut firmly in her face. Dora and her young daughter get stuck in a vicious and abusive relationship which has a huge impact on the rest of her families lives for many years to come.
