super interesting story: what happens when someone you helped free then murdered someone? I found it initially difficult to get into but after a while I did get hooked however the story seemed a bit too untethered for me!

I really enjoyed this book, but it is SO similar to a book I read immediately prior to this book called The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell. While suspenseful and an enjoyable read, I almost knew what was going to happen, based on what happened in the Lisa Jewell book.

Perhaps the similarities would not have been so blatantly obvious, but I literally closed Jewell's book and opened this one, and in many ways it felt like the retelling of the same story using different words.

Having said that this book was still very good. And I still really enjoyed it, I mean I read it in less than 24hours, so that is saying something.

This was an excellent mystery read. It had a well-constructed cast of characters, and it is suspenseful but not overly scary, which works well in its benefit. I enjoyed reading this story, and it was clearly thought out and plot-driven, never feeling rushed but also not feeling as though it was too slow.

Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for the chance to read this book!

While I love a good mystery its quite hard to find ones I love but this book has become one of my personal favorites. While Tessa is the main character of the novel the author does a wonderful job of still making you care about the secondary characters and plot. Nothing felt rushed or out of nowhere. I feel the author did an amazing job on leading you into a journey filled with so many different emotions.

Filmmaker Tessa Shepherd truly believed she’d done the right thing when her work helped free a man accused of murder. When he killed again, her life was blown to pieces. Her reputation is in tatters, but that’s nothing compared to the guilt she feels. With pressure mounting on all sides, Tessa escapes to a decaying estate called Fallbrook that her recently deceased mother has left her. There are two elderly women at Fallbrook, ostensibly caretakers, but Tessa is more interested in what they know about the estate’s murky past. This story has delightful Gothic elements in it, with a creepy old house and the equally bizarre caretakers. A story to read burrowed under the covers
