The Midwives of Lark Lane by Pam Howes

We meet the main character Cathy as she is getting married to her baby’s father in a double ceremony with her mother and new stepfather. Her mother who had suffered through an abusive marriage previously now seems to have found happiness.

After a horrible miscarriage, Cathy leaves traveling with the fair with her new husband to become a midwife. There she and some of her friends plan to make a home for unwed mothers as well as an operating maternity clinic. Things seem to be finally looking up for Cathy, her family, and her friends til news that her former stepfather has escaped from prison.

This seems to be a continuation of a series of books. While it’s story is interesting and readable on it’s own . I am drawn to other books in this series to get the back story. The author does a great job in creating the world the story appears in and many times I looked up from my Kindle in surprise that I wasn’t physically on Lark Lane.

I also admire the emotion and depth in the characters of this story. I truly felt for all the characters in this book. Overall, I’d highly recommend this author and this book.

A wish comes true

I enjoyed reading The Midwives of Lark Lane. It appears this may be part of a series and I have not had the fortune to read the books which preceded it; however the author did a good job of filling in gaps on some of the characters.

The story follow Cathy, a midwife, Gianni her husband, and Lucy their daughter. The challenges of a newly married couple as they are separated at first while Gianni performs on the carnival circuit riding a motorbike and Cathy, a nurse, completes her midwifery education.
This brings in the colorful characters of Eloise and Maria. Eloise is the jealous ex girlfriend, and Maria Gianni's fortune telling stepmother.

Cathy works with her friends who are midwives at the hospital. They all dream of opening their own maternity hospital for unwed mothers and those that wish private accommodations for the birth of their child. With the help of the characters of Jimmy and Johnny this comes about.

In the midst of everything Cathy's grandmother passes away and Gianni is there to help her through her loss. It's only after Cathy's abusive stepfather escapes from prison and tries to harm Cathy that Gianni gives up the racing circuit and gets a job to stay home with Cathy and Lucy.

This book is filled with a lot of love, its share of drama and a bit of sadness. I would recommend the book.

Thanks to Pam Howes, Bookouture, and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review and advanced copy of the book.

It's the first book I read in this series and found it poignant and engrossing, an emotional rollercoaster that I couldn't put down.
I loved the background, the fleshed out cast of characters and the well crafted plot.
I look forward to reading other books by this author.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

I have been patiently waiting for the next book from the author in the Lark Lane saga and have to say that now it’s finally here, it has been well worth the wait.

Over the course of these books, I feel like I’ve become one of the family with the characters. I’ve been with them through all the highs and lows and shared tears of joy and sadness. What a journey it’s been.

Whilst the focus has changed from Alice to her daughter Cathy in this book and the previous one, I like how we still get to catch up and keep up to date with Alice as I had grown very fond of her from the first book. Through the characters, we get to appreciate what life was like back in the early sixties in Liverpool.

Jack is one character I’ve never been fond of. Man, he made my blood boil. I was angry and both scared for Cathy and her family and don’t think I’ve ever wished someone to drop dead before. I did with Jack though. He is a horrible character though and I was willing that everything would come out all okay by the end.

The Midwives of Lark Lane was another emotional roller coaster of a read that captivated me, yet had me on the edge of my seat a number of times. Just as you think everything is going to be okay for Cathy and her family, life has other plans for them yet again. The story had me so engrossed that I couldn’t get on with my everyday life until I had finished it. If you enjoy a heartwarming saga that makes for a compulsive read, then look no further than this authors books. They are truly wonderful.

An utterly fabulous read for me. This book is set in Liverpool in the early 60’s. There was nothing in this book that I didn’t enjoy. A great storyline and great characters which make for a perfect read. Once I started this book it was so hard to stop reading it as it’s so good. This is part of a series but I hadn’t read any of the previous books so these have now been downloaded to my kindle.

Another great read in this brilliant series set in the early 60's, and still a time when being pregnant outside of marriage wasn't readily accepted by everyone. Cathy and Gianni finally tie the knot when their daughter Lucy is 18 months old, fortunately they have had the support of Cathy's gran and her mum and step dad. Everything seems to be in their favour but tragedy strikes only a few weeks after their wedding. There is also a black cloud from their past waiting to engulf them, their friends and extended family. This is a great family saga and a very enjoyable read.
