Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

A great, thrilling read, which will keep you entertained throughout. A good one sitting read, get the nibbles ready, close the door, and read!

Brilliant read, especially given that it deals with a difficult topic that becomes the twist in the plot. Couldn't stop reading!

Thank you so much for the advance copy of this book which I didn't realise when requesting was based on a true story.
This was a brilliant read and very well written with a good plot and storyline which had been hooked. I liked the characters as they were believable and i constantly found my self second guessing only to be wrong.
I hope the author writes more books as I would be interested in reading them.
Definitely recommend.

Didn’t realise this was based on a true story, was fantastic! I had my heart in my mouth at some moments, on the edge of my seat ploughing through it....

Brilliant story and characters and I cant wait for more from the author.

Cleverly Penned Narrative....
Psychological suspense taking inspiration from real events. Tense and emotional with a cleverly penned narrative. Characters are credible and relationships portrayed well.

A bit slow for me I'm afraid. Kind of knew where it was going right from the start and needed something a bit extra to persuade me to stick around

My first book by author Emily Elgar, the story brought a sinking tumoil in me. I had read enough to realize where the story was going, but the author's writing did its magic on me, and I was entranced to keep reading.

MAJOR SPOILERS
Writing seemed great, but was a rip-off of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's story. This was acknowledged in the author's note at the end, but I feel like the author might have been better off covering Gypsy's story as a non-fiction, because I really can't fault the writing!

I have mixed feelings about this book.

It was well written, thrilling and a page turner however as it is based on the true story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard I already knew the outcome. I also didnt like that the author didnt admit what it was based on, this felt like the story was being ripped off.

It was good but not sure if I would recommend.

Having heard of the true life story that Grace is Gone is based on, I was compelled to read.

I wasn’t disappointed.... confinEd to a wheel chair with numerous illnesses, with her mother as a main and only career.

Things take a turn.... amazingly written.

When Grace, a 17-year old wheelchair-bound girl with multiple serious health problems is given a diary, she vows to find secrets she can write into it.
In the picturesque English town of Ashford, Grace and her mother Meghan are beloved members of the local community, which is always keen to help Grace with fundraisers. But when Meghan is found dead and Grace is missing, along with the only suspect: Meghan’s abusive ex-partner and father of Grace, it becomes apparent that many people in the community have their own secrets. With Grace’s wheelchair left behind and her need for medication, the search becomes more urgent.
Cara, who found Meghan’s body and grew up with Grace, is hit particularly hard by the tragedy. Desperate to find Grace no matter the cost, she joins forces with Jon, a journalist despised by locals for his reporting on Grace, who already juggles work and couples therapy to win back his estranged wife and son.

Based on a real-life occurrence, the author changed some details about Grace’s disappearance and made the story her own.

The book alternates between the two narrators Cara, who finds Meghan’s body and Jon, the disgraced journalist, on their quest to find Grace. The reader hears directly from Grace through her diary entries.

The book draws in the reader quickly, it was easy to read and flowed well. While some twists were obvious, it was still enjoyable.

I am glad I did not look up which real-life mystery the book is based on, as the there was extensive news coverage on the 'real Grace' and I had of course read about her at the time. I enjoyed reading more on the 'real Grace' and finding out where the author went her own way.

I look forward to reading more books by Emily Elgar.

With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the arc, which I have enjoyed reading.
This was a very clever psychological thriller with an excellent storyline and believable characters. Meg is the mother and Grace the daughter, whom Meg cares for as she is an invalid spending her life in a wheelchair. Meg is brutally murdered one night and the sick daughter disappears. Everyone believes her father is responsible and has disappeared with Meg. After the death by drowning of his son, Simon has had severe mental health issues since his sons accidental death and is incapable of doing what everyone assumes he has done. Jon and Cara investigate Meg’s death and Grace’s disappearance and find out the truth.
Highly recommended.

Having vaguely heard about this as it is based on a true story, I went in to this book quite excited! The fact that it is essentially true crime makes it quite intriguing and you do find yourself as moments reminding yourself that this really happened.

This book is definitely a page turner and I found myself wanting to keep reading more, but at the same time is lacked any great excitement or thrills and I guessed quite early on how things were going to play out.

I enjoyed that the book was written from different points of view and I always find this makes want to read a book more. I especially liked the diary entries by Grace as we really got to find out the truth that way!

Really enjoyed this book. Lots of twists and turn that I didn't expect and certainly didn't guess many of them. Certainly keep me eager for more which is what I like in a book.

While this begins slowly, it soon picks up pace and becomes a fascinating read. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read it prior to publication.
The story focuses on what happens when Meg, a much-loved local woman, is found murdered in her home. Her daughter, Grace, is missing and so begins a tense hunt to discover what happened to her and try to find her alive.
Watching this story unfold is a journalist called Jon who seems unhealthily interested in this story. As we follow him through his day, we learn why. This family is known to him. Things between them didn’t end amicably years earlier when Jon interviewed them and suggested Meg’s ex should not have been cut out of Grace’s life in the way he was. With Simon, Grace’s dad, the prime suspect for this kidnapping we guess it’s only a matter of time until we find the truth.
Simon is, eventually, found. He refuses to cooperate with the police, but asks to talk to Jon. Breaking with protocol, focused only on getting Grace back safely, this is allowed. And so begins a tale stranger than any you could invent.
Not knowing crucial information is essential to the success of the book. Whatever our views of the characters involved, it certainly raises interesting questions about criminality and human behaviour. The ending is ambiguous, and this definitely encourages us to reflect on the information we have been given and consider what we would do with it.

This story is about Grace, a seventeen year old wheelchair bound girl, with multiple health problems and her devoted mother Meg. They live in a small Cornish village and are well liked. One day Meg is found battered by Graces' empty wheel chair. This story has lots of twists and turns and is revealed in small sections. Very absorbing story.

Single mum Meg is the sole carer of her very sick child Grace. To say she is over protective is an gross understatement as Grace isn't allowed to do anything. She is wheelchair bound and seems to spend most of her time being taken from one doctor's appointment to another. Then one day Meg is found dead and Grace has vanished. The narrative is told in present tense from the points of view of three of the characters, but unfortunately the style doesn't work for me with this particular book.

I was on a long haul flight recently and chose a film to watch knowing nothing at all about it. Based on a true story about single mum Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her sick daughter I was intrigued. What followed was a truly upsetting story of the relationship between these two.

Why am I telling you this? Because as soon as I started reading this novel I knew exactly who these characters were, and realised where the inspiration for this book came from. I think I would probably have got more from it had I not known the back story. As it is I have not enjoyed what I've read so far as I can't get on with the style of writing, or the construction. I don't usually care for fictionalised accounts of real events and I don't remember any reference to that when I first came across this book; it's disappointing that that piece of information was omitted.

My thanks to Netgalley for a free download, but I cant recommend this.

I felt that the book was slow to get going, but I persisted with it. Then it suddenly turned a corner and I couldn’t put it down.

Based on a true story, it tells the story of how Grace goes missing after her Mum is murdered. Her friend Cara searches for her with the help of a journalist, Jon.

I could see this as a movie or even a mini series on TV.

Thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read this, in exchange for an honest review.
