I read this book so quickly and subsequently finished the rest of the series in a week! I loved how fast paced it was and the mysteries in each. I also loved the authors description of the places the characters are in and their surroundings. It really brings it into your mind as you read. I love me learning more about history and art throughout the books!

History, family secrets , mystery, romance... This book has all of the elements I love. Degenerate art? I had never heard of that and found this story to be sooo interesting. I was captivated from the beginning. I can’t wait to read the next installment.
Many thanks to Paperback Writers Publishing and to NetGalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is an exciting story about a teenage sleuth investigating the mysterious death of her great aunt and missing artwork from the World War 2 era. I found it hard to put down, I got caught up in the story from the beginning. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

Stephanie meets James, the guitarist in an up and coming rock band when she travels to stay with her grandmother in the small village of Carlswick. She quickly discovers that their two families are embroiled in a longstanding feud and sets out to discover the cause. During her investigations she learns about the unexplained death of her aunt as a young woman, and sees a painting that looks suspiciously like an authentic master, Both these things seem connected. While trying to unravel these mysteries Stephanie's and James's families are trying to thwart their burgeoning romance, and other more sinister forces are at play.

I particularly liked the mystery as it was very well thought out. I learned about Degenerate Art and Hitler's crusade to destroy it all, which was really interesting. The romance was YA and I had to keep reminding myself of the couple's age when I was sighing over a sulk or tantrum. All in all this is an enjoyable romance-mystery.

The Carlswick Affair by S.L. Beaumont is a mystery with deep roots in the past. Stephanie Cooper is coming the Carlswick to spend a quiet couple of months with her grandmother before starting university in the fall. On the train she meets a very attractive young man, a musician named James, whom she discovers when she runs into him later is a member of the very popular rock band, The Fury. Both she and James are warned away form one another by their families because of a feud. When Stephanie asks her grandmother, she replies, with tears in her eyes, that they were responsible for the death of her sister, Sophie many years before and Stephanie should avoid them. James finds some old family photos and invites her to view them. Sophie was in some of them. There was a definite family resemblance. Stephanie looked just like her deceased great aunt. From there, things start to get muddled.

This is a decent book with a great premise, but somehow it missed the mark. I am not sure why. It was a quick, easy read. The plot was good, but it wasn't as thrilling as it should have been. Stephanie and James were not as clearly developed as they could have been, nor were Anna and Andy. Stephanie's grandmother was underutilized and should have been a great character. The cliffhanger at the end was kind of a cheap shot for a cozy mystery, which this attempted to be. I enjoyed it but I am sorry for the missed potential. I recommend The Carlswick Afffair to any one who is interested in the Monuments Men and missing art during the Nazi regime.
