"The truth? An activist isn't actually any one 'kind' of person. They're not a breed. They're not homogeneous. We are all activists in training. We're learning about the world all the time, and all at different levels."

In 2017, Gina Martin was at a festival when a man took a photo up her skirt. When she reported it to the police they said it wasn't a sexual offence and there was nothing they could do. In 2019, after a tireless one-woman campaign, upskirting was made a criminal offence.

Be The Change is a toolkit on how to be an activist. It explores the three main components of a campaign; awareness, advocacy and action. With advice on everything from petitions and social media to how to recognise white privilege, this book is an accessible and engaging guide on everything you ever wanted to know about being an activist.

Martin's practical advice and examples of her own successful campaign, when she had no political and legal background herself, provides hope and inspires us that we have the power to change things. A must-read for anyone who is disillusioned with politics, or just doesn't know where to start in trying to make a change. .

In the time of such political and social uncertainty, this book has given me hope. It has stopped me from feeling so small in all of this, and made me realise that I have power and a voice, and I can use both with the right tools.

Be The Change was written in such an accessible way, making such huge change as Gina did seem even more possible to achieve. Gina Miller writes with such passion, it is hard not to find it infectious and want to make an impact.

I love the concept behind this book; showing the insides of a young woman making a positive change for the country and that it is possible without any legal or political experience. This is a book I reccomend to anyone feeling disengaged with politics, but especially to young women for a successful role model figure.

An inspiring and accessible read, Be The Change sets out to train a new generation of activists in a world that desperately needs more activism. Talking through social media, rallies, marches and interviews, as well as gentle activism like purchasing power, Martin makes the case that everyone has the capacity to take more action- and teaches the reader how without lecturing, condescending or overwhelming. Inspiring!
