Princess Fuzzypants here: If the beauty and the grace of Charleston was not enough to tempt people to visit once the current lock downs are lifted, the ghosts might. With a history that dates back to the 16th Century, all the lives and history that have imbibed this city has contributed to it’s plethora of supernatural stories. You will eat up this book if you are, as I am I, a fan of such tales.
In short but fascinating stories the author describes not only the legends but also her own research as a paranormal investigator to sift fact from fantasy. There are some great stories. Some are sad. Others are scary. All are entertaining. She even has one very spooky story at the end of the book that will leave you shaking your head in wonder.
Since you cannot travel to Charleston right now, I can recommend this literary trip. Five purrs and two paws up.

I like it because I've been there and it shows a lot of different places. A good book if you're into ghosts, like I am.

Denise Roffe’s Ghosts and Legends of Charleston, South Carolina is an informative and fascinating book. Charleston has a long history which has been marked with death and tragedy through wars, piracy, earthquakes, fires, and slavery. This book is an excellent introduction to the history and paranormal activity of this beautiful and interesting city. I wish some of the writing was better edited but I thoroughly enjoyed this well-researched and quick read.

I love history and the paranormal so this book was perfect for me! Roffe combines interesting historical research with spooky eyewitness accounts. I loved reading about Sullivan’s Island where the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe had a friendly interaction with a woman searching for seashells. I also enjoyed reading about the restaurant Poogan’s Porch and the ghost dog. I was moved by the sad stories and histories attached to the graveyards and cemeteries as well as the Hunley submarine and the many plantations.

The book is well-organized into chapters which include Charleston’s haunted history, haunted eateries, island ghosts, day trips around Charleston and even a section on cryptozoology! There is also a great introduction with a helpful description of the equipment used to document paranormal activity.

Roffe’s writing style is approachable and informative. The book is filled with historical information but it is presented briefly and simply. There’s also an excellent balance between pictures and text. Too many books in this genre are often filled with blocks of writing and little to no pictures and I usually have to Google to visualize these specific places. The pictures in this book are black and white and I do think full colour would have really elevated some of them. However, I am just so happy that Roffe included so many pictures! I loved looking at the haunting but gorgeous architecture of the cemeteries, plantations, restaurants, and houses that she mentions. There’s even a picture of a supposed apparition!

But, Roffe’s writing could have been a little better edited. She sometimes takes a while to get to the point in certain sections. Also, the transitions between some sections are a little jarring. Additionally, some more detailed information could have been provided about certain stories and locations.

Ghosts and Legends of Charleston, South Carolina is a well-researched and fascinating book about a legendary city. This quick and easy-to-read book is perfect for those who love history or who want a succinct but informative look into the paranormal.

If you're looking for a guide for the history and ghosts of South Carolina, this is a great place to start. In the end, this is a fantastic ghost guide and an accidental guide.

This was a informative and well-written book. It's clear that the author has done her research while writing this book and it was interesting to read.

This has just the right amount of history and spookiness. The author shows that she has done a lot of research, I did find that I enjoyed the legend/stories behind the hauntings more than the actual eye witness accounts but that's normal with me. Even with ghost hunting tv programmes, I am always more interested in the legends and history than the actual ghost hunting parts. I also found the second half of the book a bit more interesting than the first half, maybe due to the places it covered. I really liked the section that covered a bit of the legends and supernatural creatures of the Gullah/Geechie people, especially the Boo Hag, very creepy! Unfortunately I didn't enjoy the part about UFOs since I have little interest in that area.
I recommend this to anyone who has a interest in American history as well as the supernatural.

This is a non fiction book that details ghosts and legends of Charleston in South Carolina. It isn't an overly long read and it's interesting if a little bland in places. It's historic and factual rather than sensational and the stories are more eerie than actually scary. I feel like this book might do better not being read on a kindle as photos etc would show up better.

Charleston is considered one of the most haunted cities in America; it’s certainly seen a lot of things, both profane and beautiful. Roffe presents the stories of hauntings with a solid base of research so readers will understand why a location might have a spectral presence or two floating nearby. Fun and informative

Living in an area full of medieval castles, old battlefields and execution sites of both witches and and 17th century Covenanters, it is no surprise that local tales of the supernatural abound here. Some places just lead themselves to ghostly happenings. One such place is Charleston. With its Native American heritage, colonial settlers, revolutionary and civil wars and its dark and disturbing connection with slavery, is it any wonder that the haunted past is still experienced?

Now paranormal investigator Denise Roffe has produced a scary and informative guide to the numerous sites in and around this most antebellum of Southern cities. Tales of ghostly pirates, plantation dwellers and soldiers are all here. There is even the ghost of Edger Allan Poe no less. Add to this various cryptozoolical creatures and UFO's sightings and we have here a book fully rich in all things paranormal however strange, even a mermaid!

With many photographs (including an alleged ghost near a tree) and useful tourist information on opening times and phone numbers of the attractions, this a guide that any visitor to the City should consider taking. I'm a natural sceptic but the author's own experiences particularly a bizarre encounter with a tour guide doppelganger does make you wonder. I have never been to the USA but one day I will hopefully travel there and if so Charleston will be high on the list of destinations.
