This book was a little too chaotic for me. I think this would be good for readers who always want there to be something happening, but for me personally, I think our protagonist could have gained plenty of life experience without so much drama. There were also a couple of things I'll admit I found a little odd. I didn't really understand the narrator's need to retell the reader, stories that they'd literally just read. I also wasn't a fan of the non-drug induced hallucinations. It was just too weird for me.

I really enjoyed this book! It sucked me in from the beginning and didn’t let go. I was expecting short stories but it was actually the story of John trying to find himself while on a drive to San Francisco. Lots of interesting characters and many unexpected twists I didn’t see coming. There were a few disjointed parts in this ARC but I am so glad I got a chance to check this book out. I would definitely read more from Bob McCrillis.

This was an interesting tale of John Bennett's cross-country car driven journey across America, where after a dismal performance in high school and tanking college, John wants to experience the Summer of Love in San Francisco, California, at the height of the swinging sixties in 1967. He wants to experience the hippie counterculture before he considers enlisting in the United States Marine Corps and serve in the controversial Vietnam War. It takes quite a while before he gets to his final destination, as he stops around the country, in places such as Newburg and Standish, in the state of Missouri, where he needs to fill up his petrol tank and get his car fixed and maintained, so stopovers are necessary as he works odd jobs using whatever expertise he has, to finance his journey and be useful. He meets a lot of unique, eccentric, and dangerous individuals, and has to make and take difficult decisions, and learn a lot of important lessons along the way. This novel was a sensational and wild ride.
