I thought that this was a biography of Emma Hamilton. Instead, it was mostly a compilation of her letters. Still, this book shows Emma Hamilton as a fascinating historical figure. I think that I’ll still be looking for a better biography.

From reading the description of this book I feel it would have been one that I would have enjoy tremendously. For this reason I gave it four stars.

Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for an Advance Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I should preface this review by saying that I knew very little about Lady Emma Hamilton and her relationship with Lord Nelson before reading this book. Essentially the book is a retelling of Emma's life through letters written to and by her to the prominent people in her life. Therefore, her relationship with Nelson only takes up a third of the book. My understanding is that she is generally viewed by historians to have been of low birth, course manners and an unforgiveable home-wrecker. But because the history starts with her very early life, it's easier to understand the choices she made, or in some cases, was forced to make.
Her peers were conservative Victorians, consumed with the importance of propriety and, although she seems to have been innocent and guileless in her early life, society's criticisms and the mistreatment and judgement of those around her seem to have made her nature and ego much worse. She's an interesting character - beautiful and foolish - she'd fit right into reality TV these days!
I read an uncorrected proof which was hard to follow at times but I expect the final version will be much easier to read.

An interesting subject.
The life of Emma Hamilton is fascinating, the letters less so.
The historical narrative is a great read but the letters are long and some of them are a bit rambling. I personally don't think that including whole letters add anything and shorter extracts would have worked just as well for illustrating the personalities and concerns of the protagonists.
There were some formatting issues that made some of this difficult to read. But it's such an interesting period of history this is definitely worth read.

Thank you Netgalley for the digital copy in return for an honest review.

Been on a being of reading about people I haven't heard of. This is an addition to that pile. A chunk, well pretty much of it is her letters and some returned responses with a bit of biography about her and some people in her life. A nice source of primary information about her.
