Wonderfully written, perfectly paced....just brilliant from start to end.
The story eases you into the life of the Page family, setting the scene for what is to come. All of the characters are complex with their own demons to face as the story begins to unfold.
Twists and turns which I didnt expect kept me hooked from the opening line, meaning I read the entire book in 1 day.
I couldn't recommend this book highly enough, Jane Corry has done it once again with an unbelievably addictive page turner.

Thank you so much for allowing me to review this ARC.

The story of a dissatisfied wife and her mistakes.

Poppy the main character is a little wet and worries more about what people think of her than she does about her marriage. Rather than speaking to her husband and working things through she snowballs from one bad situation to another.

Her mother in law is concerned and wants to help bit says little. Towards the end of the book they seem to bond and things look up.

I received an advance reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review

This is definitely not her best but definitely not her worst. An OK thriller, no more, no less

I Made a Mistake is told from two perspectives, Poppy and Betty’s, Poppy has been married to Stuart, Betty’s son, for 20 years they have two daughters together, Poppy owns a casting agency for extras and at an event bumps into an old flame Matthew, the attraction is still there even though he did her wrong years ago, he is all that Stuart isn’t and it isn’t long before Poppy makes a huge mistake and ultimately someone ends up dead, but who killed them?
Betty’s perspective is largely from her past, her secrets and sadness, there is a lot of present day too. We also get the court case proceedings throughout the book.
I liked the way the book was laid out Poppy’s perspective in one chapter then Betty’s in another and then the court proceedings. It was full of twists and so suspenseful I was on the edge of my seat.
I thought I knew who the murderer was but I was shocked when it was revealed as it wasn’t who I thought.
Betty’s perspective on how her life was like with her husband Jock was heart-wrenching. The whole book had me switching from many different emotions. I really enjoyed it.

I Made a Mistake is the first book I've read from author Jane Corry and it certainly did not disappoint!

Imagine running into your first love 20 years down the line. The one that broke your heart. How would you react? This is the dilemma faced by casting agent, Poppy Page, when Matthew Gordon appears in front of her. Since he left her for another woman, Poppy has gone from strength to strength. She now has a successful career, a lovely house, a dental surgeon husband and a loving family. So why can't Poppy get Matthew out of her mind and why would she risk everything to see the man who treated her so badly?

The tale is told from a dual-perspective, Poppy and her mother-in-law, Betty.  Poppy is an interesting character, more so because her actions involving Matthew are not what I would have expected from an outwardly sensible woman. I found Betty's story line to be fascinating. It is told by way of letters that she is writing to Poppy, detailing her marriage to Jock, these chapters explore the attitudes and restrictions that women faced back in the seventies. Both women have committed terrible mistakes and the book explores the consequences of those mistakes. It also takes a deeper look at the relationships between the characters and their families, and how those relationships change as a result of their actions.

The story is well-paced and skilfully plotted. By the first few chapters, I simply couldn't put it down. Everyone makes mistakes, yet you never imagine the consequences would be so dire.

I Made a Mistake is an enthralling tale of love, desire, abuse and betrayal. It is gritty, clever and wonderfully twisty, serving as a stark reminder that there are reasons why our lives move forward and it can be destructive to spend too much time looking back. Corry's latest book is a terrific read and perfect for fans of a page-turning domestic noir. I will certainly be adding Corry's past catalogue to my TBR list.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a review copy of I Made a Mistake.

Poppy has an encounter with an old flame Matthew which changes everything.
The story flips between three scenarios which I loved. Especially hearing about Betty’s life growing up and getting married.
Poppy and Matthew end up ‘conveniently’ at the same place at the same time on more than one occasion which leads to Poppy making the biggest mistake of her life which she hopes she can forget about.
Someone has other ideas and begins to make life for Poppy difficult which leads to disaster.
Although early on I guessed the outcome, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the build up to the end.
I loved the style of the authors writing, it made it very easy to get lost in the book!
Can’t wait to read more by the author!

My thanks to Netgalley and Penguin for a copy of “ I Made A Mistake” for an honest review.

Perhaps not the best of Jane Corry’s books , but it has a lot to live up to ! I still found this an enjoyable read . I felt the characters were well rounded and I was interested in how things would work out for each of them at the end of the book.I liked how the story progressed from the position of the two main characters
I found the conclusion to the story satisfying and had elements I wasn’t expecting .
Would recommend but also for others to see out Jane Corry’s earlier books

Disclaimer: received from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Not quite sure why I picked this one up off Netgalley but I finished it (surprise! as it's outside of my usual genre preferences). I think I was just drawn into the characters' lives (two different generations with the narrative swinging between the two which somehow worked out for me pacing wise) and wanted to find out how things worked out in the end. Somehow towards the middle it just ended being up interesting enough to win out over the other books I am always polyreading.

Bumping up the rating to a 4 as in hindsight for the genre that it is and how it's not one I'm used to and how despite that I finished it - definitely deserves a better rating for that alone I think.

I am a real fan of Jane’s books so I was so excited to receive an ARC copy of I Made a Mistake, the book is set around Poppy a successful casting agent who is married to Stuart and they have two teenage daughters.

Poppy and Stuart’s marriage has stagnated over the years to the point that they are no longer intimate so when Poppy meets up unexpectedly with an old boyfriend Matthew she is flattered that he still finds her attractive.

Matthew left Poppy for his now wife Sandra and they also have problems.

Will Poppy be tempted ?

The second narrator in the book is Betty who is Poppy’s Mother in Law and Mother of Stuart. She also has secrets about her marriage to Stuart’s father Jock , and Betty has kept them for many years putting on a brave face for her family.

This is a fantastic read, I started and I could not put it down, the characters are believable and very human and the author has a wonderful gift of hooking the reader in and building suspense throughout the story and this story is no exception.

I liked Poppy, she is all at sea with her life and when Matthew pops up in her life again she is flattered that someone still finds her attractive. However, things take a sinister turn in this relationship and Poppy is scared that she will lose everything.

I loved the Daughter in law / Mother in law dynamic. I have been lucky with my mother in laws and have good relationships with them and I enjoyed Betty looking out for Poppy in the absence of her own mother. Dear Betty, she has had a tough life and now Jock has died she is living with Poppy and Stuart and the girls but has many skeletons in her closet.

As always there is a big twist and this is something that I love in Jane’s books just when think its all over something else pops up.

Fan’s of Jane will love this book and if you have not read one before then you are in for a treat.

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Books for a free copy of the book in return for an honest review. Published 28th May 2020.

Poppy Page has a fairly comfortable life. Her husband is a dentist and she has 2 daughters. She failed to be an actress so set up an agency providing extras for the tv and film industry. It is at an evening event for the industry she bumps into Matthew, the love of her life, who dumped her to marry her friend. Meeting Matthew again starts a chain of events which could end her marriage and ruin her life as he becomes obsessed with her.

Poppy’s mother in law, Betty, lives with Poppy and her family and helps with the housework and looking after the girls while Poppy and Stuart work. She is a very fit and outgoing 70 year old.

Poppy is the daughter Betty never had. Poppy thinks Betty had the perfect marriage, but that is far from the truth.

The story is told in alternating first person narrative both from Poppy and also very cleverly in letters to Poppy from Betty. Betty’s letters explain what a difficult life she had with her controlling and abusive husband, and of a dark secret.

And add another layer to the mix, the trial for Matthew’s murder. This runs throughout the book.

There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you glued from the first page right to the last.

This is not the first, and will not be the last Jane Corry book I read. This lady can tell a story! Highly recommend.

It's my second book by this author and I really enjoyed it!
It's a great story about mistakes, betreyal, and love.
Poppy is a businesswoman, wife and a mother. One day her life changes when she again meets her first love, Matthew. She makes a mistake and she has to pay for it.
I wasn't really a fan of Poppy. I didn't dislike her, but there wasn't really much to like about her.
But I really liked Betty, her mother-in-law. She shares her life story in the letters written to Poppy. It's a very bittersweet and heartbreaking story. She is such a strong woman.
I really liked the storytelling and the author's style. I was surprised with plotwists!

This is the second book by Jane Corry that I have read and I really enjoyed it. When I first picked it up I wasn't sure. I expected a thriller but instead we learned about the seemingly innocent lives of Poppy Page and her mother in law Betty wirh a a court case popping up now and again. Two woman from different generations who both make a series of mistakes years apart that collide together and end in someone being murdered. Who is guilty and why would they commit such a crime?

I loved how this came together and you could see the process of someone making the decision to kill. I loved when the killer was revealed. The end had so many twists and turns it made up for the lack of them at the beginning.

So, if you like dramas with lots of suspense and a murder thrown in for good measure, this is the book for you! Sounds great doesn’t it and it is.

It’s a dual narrative story (which I personally love) with a murder trial alternating so we know from the get go, something has gone terribly wrong.

Poppy Page works as an agent and is married with a family. Her mother-in-law Betty is a big help at home and dealing with a father who has the beginnings of dementia, her busy life is thrown into turmoil, when her first love Matthew walks back into her life. Charming, handsome and someone she hasn’t really gotten over, will Poppy fall for his charms or is there something more sinister behind his re-emergence?

This novel is such a page turner. It had me hooked from the get go. The prologue sets the scene and from there on, you know there’s been a murder and I loved that. It kept me reading and I couldn’t put it down. I also loved how the main characters were female. This novel is all about suspense, with a good drama as a background and is a perfect read for the summer.

4🌟 from me!

I wasn’t sure about this book at first, but once I’d got to about third of the way through, I was hooked! I liked how the author pulled me in with the different characters and telling the story by using the voices of 2 of the main characters (Poppy and her mother in law, Betty) and also telling the story from different points in time. It had twists and turns, making it unpredictable and exciting with a satisfying ending.

‘I Made A Mistake’ is the latest book by Jane Corry.

In Poppy Page’s mind, there are two types of women in this world: those who are faithful to their husbands, and those who are not. Until now, Poppy has never questioned which she was. But when handsome, charming Matthew Gordon walks back into her life after almost two decades, that changes. Poppy makes a single mistake – and that mistake will be far more dangerous than she could imagine. Someone is going to pay for it with their life.

I’ve come to really love books by Jane Corry. She always writes a gripping first line that grabs the readers attention and ‘I Made A Mistake’ is no different.

The story is seen from the narrative of booking agent Poppy Page and her mother in law Betty and the two narratives from both women are extremely compelling.

Poppy never got over her first love called Matthew and when he reappears into her life after being away for years, she finds herself drawn to him. After one reckless tonight together, Poppy finds herself being terrorised by Matthew as he claims that he’s never gotten over her. Betty, thought she found her soulmate called Jock who she married in the 1960’s but instead she founds herself controlled, alone and longing for a better life.

The story goes through the narrative of both characters back and forth in the past and present tense and I found this fascinating reading. I loved Betty, this strong vibrant character who’s priority is her family but as the story flashes back to the past tense, we follow her as she transforms from a meek character to a strong woman. The story reflects on the controlling aspects of relationships but also how women were treated and expected to behave in the 1960’s.

Poppy was also an interesting character, unsatisfied by her relationship, she’s flattered when the once love of her life reappears claiming undying love for her. Her head’s turned and when tragedy strikes, she finds herself in the spotlight.

The steady pace of the story really pulls the reader in, with the dual narratives plus the inclusion of court appearances, this book made for gripping and fascinating reading. In this story, Jane concentrates on the darker themes of society, such abuse, infidelity and lies and this made the story for addictive reading.

Riddled with tension and suspense throughout, ‘I Made A Mistake’ is a genuinely gripping psychological thriller, filled with twists and turns, this cleverly written story was a fantastic twisty tale.

You can buy ‘I Made A Mistake’ from Amazon and will be available buy from good bookshops

This is a very absorbing and tense read, though if it had been a movie I was watching I would have been hiding behind my hands. Skilfully written, the plot draws the reader in. I spent much of the novel and made me want to shout at Poppy to think again before she refreshed her relationship with Matthew, to take the time to really talk to her husband to try and work though their differences etc. This was my first read of a Jane Corry book, but not my last.

The headlines for this book make it sound like a 'roller-coaster' full of twists and turns and a bit of a thriller. I'll admit there are a few twists and turns but find it inaccurately portrayed like this as a thriller and it's definitely not a roller-coaster!

Having said that I enjoyed the read albeit with the slower pace compared to what I was expecting. There are only brief elements of tension as a lot of the prose is past-tense. Also I found the twists to be somewhat revealed in a low-key manner when tension could have been built up before a big reveal. I felt it could have been so much better with a little tweaking.

Betty, the mother-in-law, turned out to be an interesting character but to be brutally honest also a little too unbelievable to enjoy the ending of the book.

In summary, I enjoyed it but it wasn't the roller-coaster I was expecting.

Jane Cory takes on a fabulous journey, of someone who made a mistake, discovering that she wasn't the only one to make a mistake. The story is told from different perspectives with much feeling and cleverly brings in unexpected twists.
