Woah, I don't know Jane Corry keeps coming up with these fantabulous books, but I hope it never stops. This one was brilliant, and it only took me a few chapters to become hooked.

I think if this book was to have a message it's that all actions have consequences, far more reaching than you may first think.

I mean Poppy knows pretty much instantly and cheating on her husband, with her first love when he reappears was in fact a mistake - but what isn't so apparent is just how huge an error of judgment that is, and the far reaching effects it can have on everyone she knows and loves.

This is a very hard book to describe, as I would hate to give away any spoilers, but suffice to say it is a gripping story, told from three viewpoints - Poppy, her mother in law Betty and also snippets from a trial.

Betty's story was without a doubt a highlight for me, from her time as a young girl, throughout her marriage and right up to the present day, what she had to go through, and put up with for the sake of family, is heart wrenching, but at the same time as she herself says, it was just the way things were in those days.

Equally though I did really enjoy Poppy's story, I felt for her at times, at others wanted to know why she was making such bad decisions, while understanding her too. There is a whole lot of depth to this book and it was a pleasure to read each and every word, and to see just how things unfolded.

You know from the prologue and blurb that someone dies, but just who, and why - well it's compulsive reading to find out.

Thank you to Penguin and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily,

Having read other novels by Jane Corry I knew that I Made A Mistake would be a read which was hard to put down.

Poppy Page is a mum, wife and owns a successful extras agency. When her first love Matthew Gordon walks back into her life Poppy makes a huge mistake- and that mistake is more dangerous than one could ever imagine, which is bound to have a profound effect on the whole family.

The story is well written and told from 3 different perspectives; Poppy’s, scenes from The Central Criminal Court where Poppy gives evidence for a murder trial and Betty’s, Poppy’s mother in law. I particularly loved how Betty’s story was told through a series of letters to Poppy which described her life with her late husband Jock. Betty appears to be a very loving mother, grandmother and mother-in-law, who at 70 years old is still full of life! Although she comes across very flawless, in letters to Poppy she unravels the mistakes she too made during her marriage and similarities are formed.

Primarily a thriller, I Made a Mistake also touches upon domestic transformations over the years. However, I was a little disappointed that at the end it is suggested that Poppy can’t be the best mum/wife and keep managing her agency. Despite this, the book is well written, full of suspense and once again Jane Corry succeeds in leading you to believe one thing for the majority of the book and takes you by surprise at the end.

I would like to thank Net Galley and Penguin Random House for supplying me a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

3-4 stars. While I did enjoy this book, I don’t think it was really a thriller, more of a domestic drama, with a tiny bit of domestic suspense. Very slow moving, but a few shocks that do lead you to believe one thing when it’s not the way it’ll end up being. Overall, it’s well written and does give you a couple of oh crud, I didn’t think that moments. I think Corry is very good at developing great character and that slow burn story that gives you a couple twist and turns. Would recommend to those who love the slow burn, very well developed story, with more drama and less chills and thrills!
I’ll make sure to buzz it up on all the different platforms!

I have enjoyed all Jane Corry's novels and this was also an enthralling, compelling read. Interesting characters with intriguing back stories.

This is the first book I've read by Jane Corry, and I was totally drawn in by it. The characters are believable, and I love the relationship Poppy has with Betty, her mother in law. I found myself wishing they would talk to each other more, but enjoyed the two sides of the story. I was quite sad when I finished reading it.

I have read a few books while on lockdown and struggled to get connected but this fantastic book had me escaping from these troubled times in a very welcome way .

It started with a kiss and ended in murder!!

The story centres around two woman Poppy and her mother in law Betty. Both woman have made mistakes in their lives and they both had different coping mechanisms. The society expectations of mothers and wives depending on the times is beautifully explored, and the choices available to woman depending on the age they lived in.

I loved how I never lost the storyline, each character was real to me and the struggles they faced were true to life. I loved Betty the fantastic mother in law loyal to both her son and daughter in law. (something I aspire to do)

The devastation consequences of an affair and how to let go of the past were at the centre of the story line. The decision to stay together in my mind is just as difficult as splitting up and this was depicted throughout the book.

In these uncertain days we have more time to think of what is important in our lives, and not seeing family and friends is one of the most difficult for me personally, so I could relate to both these women love of their family.

Thank you Jane Corry for another page turner and the publishers and netgalley for my chance to review this five star read in exchange for my honest opinion.

Poppy is a married mother of two, she is a successful working mother with her own business, as you would expect she has the usual stresses and strains of juggling family and working life. Her relationship with her mother-in-law is very strong and you can feel the love they share for one another. Poppy makes a mistake and her mother-in-law is there to support her and help to pick up the pieces. Things aren’t what they seem, and their past experiences come back to haunt. The story evolves and those in the wrong shifts, the ending was very very good. I really enjoyed this, a very good thriller with a huge emphasis on family relationships and how our past can influence what decisions we make in the present.

The story of two women who had both made mistakes in their lives and the sacrifices they were prepared to make to save their families.
An interesting story line but in parts, especially the sections set in the present day, I felt it was bordering on farce.
It did not feel like a thriller.

An easy to read story of how a woman's mistake of being drawn in by hey first love.

After compromising her family and everything she holds important, she has her ex threaten to take all of that away from her.

With a combination of her mother in laws narration of her marriage which is beautifully written gives the book more heart contrasting

An excellent read, a story of mothers and mothers in law and of affairs. Just when you have solved the mystery another gigantic piece of information is added to the mix which turns your theory on its head. The way the mothers and the daughter in laws stories run alongside makes for an interesting slant on married life. So affairs, blackmail, murder - blimey, how much more excitement can you get in one book. A very enjoyable book, we get a full family saga from beginning to end over the generations. It a tale that keeps its secrets to the end.

My second book by Jane Corry and it was just fabulous !!
This is a story told in alternating chapters by Poppy and her mother in law Betty that has a slow and compulsive build up as we find out more about the lives of these two different women and how they both had to cope with mistakes they made. The characters of the two women were brilliantly written especially Betty who was my favourite character all through the book and I loved her story and her struggles in a time when women didn’t have the choices they have today.
The read was for me one that I couldn’t put down and I loved the the book was set out, Jane Corry certainly knows how to write a story that can grip you from the start and I feel sure that she has written another winner here and one I can highly recommend.
My thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Books UK for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

In this story, we follow Poppy and her mother-in-law, Betty. Poppy is a career-focused woman, currently struggling with her marriage, so when she meets up with her former boyfriend, Matthew, who she loved with a passion before he broke her heart, Poppy ends up sleeping with him and everything goes wrong from there.

The story is interwoven between the two women, we have Betty telling Poppy about her life and her marriage to Jock and also the things she was never able to confess to her loving family. and also Poppy trying to keep her family from finding out that she had slept with her old flame.

This book is well written and extremely enjoyable.
I did manage to guess some of how it was going to end but there were still parts that I wasn’t expecting.
I can’t wait for Jane to release another book as hers make a compelling read.

Excellent read. Two stories in one...told by Poppy and her mother in law Betty.
The story hooks you right from the start...when something happens on the underground...there then follows an eventful ride full of twists and turns till the end. Once I'd started it, I could not put it down! An addictive read. First I've read by Jane Corry...I shall be looking for more.

This has been a gripping read which has kept me on the edge of my seat. This is well written with a great pace and enough edginess to keep the reader guessing.
I have liked the characters in this book and felt that the courtroom scenes gave this book extra substance.
However, the ending of this one could have been stronger in order to make this a five star read. I enjoyed it but the ending was lacking something for me.

This wasn't a straightforward story, lots of unexpected twists. Two stories in one makes for an interesting read. Some realistic characters, great descriptive writing and a conclusion that brought tears to me eyes. Fascinating story.

Every so often I review a book which, for me, seems slow for the first 75% and then explodes into a superb book. I Made A Mistake falls into this category.
I checked other reviews and one-line 'superb' quotes on the book and they are full of 'twists and turns'. For me this is true at the end but not for the majority of the book.
After the first chapter sets the scene you know something has happened on the London Underground but what and who?
The remainder of the book splits into 3 streams - Betty (mother in law) very detailed 'letters' about how she grew up and progressed through life - Poppy (main character) again very detailed explanation of what happened prior to the first chapter and thirdly, the Old Bailey, where Poppy is grilled about what happened.
I 'confidently' worked out who it was and why but the verdict is given when 85% through. So I thought there must be a chapter of a new book at the end to pad out to 100%.
Read on and then the book explodes and I couldn't put it down. Lots more to read and several big surprising twists that I was nowhere near seeing. Beautifully written and well worth waiting for.
