Inspired by the true stories of animals who helped the war effort during World War II, this engaging novel imagines a wartime in which wild animals also play their part. This novel continues the story of The Umbrella Mouse, Pip Hanway, as she strives to take her umbrella home to join her remaining family in the Umbrella Museum in Italy. On her way, she becomes a member of a resistance group of disparate creatures in Normandy, who under the noses and feet of the human combatants, carry out their part in intelligence and sabotage to win France back for the allies, with their own battles to fight against the animals working for Axis.
I had not read the first novel (although I will now!) but this did not hamper my enjoyment of this sequel as the allusions to Pip’s previous adventures provide enough background to give the context, which is further supported by the mention of real events and characters from history. Detailed descriptions evoke the settings and whilst never forgetting the characters are animals, their emotions and relationships reflect genuine wartime experiences.
This is a fast paced adventure, filled with danger and heroism, treachery and honour, loss and hope, with characters whose dilemmas demonstrate the value of friendship, trust and loyalty. I enjoyed it immensely.

After finishing The Umbrella Mouse, I couldn't wait for the new adventure to begin. Anna Fargher does not disappoint. Pip continues in her dramatic and dangerous exploits to help with the war effort. The Umbrella Mouse to the Rescue is packed with feats of extreme bravery, many moments of grief and sorrow, but also extraordinary companionship throughout. The bonds of friendship far outshine the horror of war. I read this book over several days as it was so difficult to tear myself away from (I needed to find out if Pip ever did get to the umbrella museum!) This book leaves you with a lasting thought....remember the most extraordinary things can happen to the smallest of creatures. Definitely a 5 star read.

I loved catching up with Pip and her friends. Yet another amazing instalment enlightening the reader to the role animals played in WWII and letting us know how Pip and the members of Noah”s Ark were doing. The drama compels you to keep reading and treats the reader to joy, suspense, pain, tears and relief in a roller coaster read. If you love animals, are interested in history and can not get enough suspense and drama, this is the book for you.

It was so wonderful to join Pip on the next stage of her adventure through War tor Europe. Pip is a charming and tenacious little mouse who never gives up hope- and never gives up her umbrella!
Pip faces new challenges as she joins the French Resistance, meeting new animal friends, deciding who to trust and bravely fighting for freedom and friendship.
Another brilliant book by Anna Fargher that doesnt shy away from the complex themes of War, grief, betrayal and morality yet in an utterly engaging and accessible way
A great read for ages 9-11.

Pip is going to France! I was happy to meet him again, with his adventurous spirit and his nice friends. Of course, the context is difficult: it's war and everyone must fight in order to survive. There's violence and death. But there's also friendship, bravery and hope - don't give up!

A follow-up equal to the great debut.
