The Split is a sophisticated and well written psychological thriller with added drama provided by its opening chapters set in the Antarctic. This seems like the perfect place for Felicity Lloyd to hide from her past, but then we find out that her estranged husband, Freddie is looking for her, and he’s on a boat heading her way. I found the start a slow burner, but the suspense ramps up and the novel soon becomes gripping, with a host of Intriguing characters. The twist at the end took me by surprise.

This book started off so strongly for me. Both the location that it is set in and how tense it makes you feel right from the outset. But sadly it does not carry through the entirety of the book.
Starting so strongly only made the rest of the story somewhat of a let down for me.
The four parts feel somewhat disjointed and in a sense left me in no rush to get back to read more of this book.
The back story was one of the best parts but again was overshadowed by other longer more drawn out parts that didn't grip me as much.
The pacing was slow in parts, which again didn't have me excited to read more. And some of the twists were rather predictable, which immediately knocks a star off any review for me.
I have heard really good things about Sharon Bolton's other books, so I would be keen to try reading at least another one of her stories but sadly this one didn't impress me as much as I imagined it would.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a well written story that was totally compulsive reading. I read this in one day, staying awake in the early hours of the morning until I finished it. Superb descriptions of the Antarctic and glaciers which were so informative and as the reader made me feel that I was there seeing and feeling it all. I felt pity for Joe, the psychologist that Felicity was consulting, but at the same time frustrated with his impulsive and slightly unprofessional behaviour.
I consider that Sharon Bolton has incorporated total realism throughout this story and I simply loved it.

I have tried reading this twice now but it just doesn't grip me unfortunately. Also, the graphic detail regarding animal killings were just too much for me.

I might try again in future and update.

What a great book that simply keeps you gripped from start to finish.

There are an awful lot of characters though, many of whom I honestly couldn't see the point of , but of course, they're never pointless.

Full of twists and turns. Some you can see coming a mile off - and feel smug about for all of 10 minutes , until you realise that was the plan - and then others just come from nowhere and really leave you wondering.

I never repeat the blurb. This wasn't the best of Sharon Bolton's books, and I've read many more. Perhaps a tad too much technical glacier-based writing and I'm never a fan of being dropped into a confusing almost end of the story. I almost gave up until the actual back story started, Good read in the middle and then the ending was again overly descriptive in terms of ice.

This is a gripping read from Sharon Bolton as always.
I loved the way this book leads you one way and then turns it completely on it’s head.
We follow the story of Felicity who takes a job in icy South Georgia and loves her work.
We then delve into Felicity’s life before she went away and realise she’s frightened of someone and strange things are happening in her home.
She goes to Joe for counselling and what he uncovers is quite shocking.
I really felt for Felicity as her whole life is not what she thinks.
This is a great read that will have you hooked from the very first page.
Thanks to Orion Publishing Group and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Wow! This is a little belter of a book. It starts edgy with one of a specialised research team working out on a remote island of the coast of South Georgia, in the Antarctic, getting together plans to make herself scarce after Freddie Llyod had written to her telling her he was coming. Freddie had been released from prison after serving a sentence for murder and now he had found her. No-one knows about her past, except Freddie Llyod.
Felicity is a glaciologist, the descriptions of her work were absolutely fascinating. I could have read a book just about her and what she did there. The story bounces between Freddie, Felicity's attempts to stay hidden until the boat leaves again with Freddie on it and a mysterious woman that has remarkable fighting and survival skills that has caused a stir on the Island.
The story falls back to Cambridge and sessions with Dr Joe Grant, a psychiatrist that Felicity is seeing on a professional level. She becomes very much the damsel in distress with Grant being the one to pick up the pieces. This is such a racy story that didn't give me time to return back to any sort of reality in my own life. It pushed me past edgy, it pushed me to insanity. I loved this book.
The characters are superb, the research top notch and the storyline just blew me away. My best read of the year so far. Stunning!
I wish to thank NetGalley and the publisher for an e-copy of this book which I have reviewed honestly.

Felicity Lloyd knows ice, she studies glaciers and has been granted a posting on the island of South Georgia to do just that. This is where she comes into her own, ice is not just her comfort zone but her passion. But her past is about to come a knocking and when it does it won’t matter how remote an area her ice has taken her to, there will be a reckoning.

Even if you have this one figured out early on (which unusually for Sharon Bolton thrillers I did) it doesn’t detract from a well executed and gripping thriller. The descriptions of the unforgiving landscapes of South Georgia are an absolute bonus. Highly recommended.

Abandoned at 30%. Present tense, multiple viewpoints, ridiculously short fragmentary chapters - no coherent story emerging, no character I care about, and I'm finding myself skipping huge sections, especially the ultra-tedious relating of dreams various characters have, which I suspect are supposed to be building an atmosphere of dread but in reality are as tedious when someone in real life insists on telling you their dreams. Add in several touches of "that day" syndrome, and I'm done.

This is a fast paced thriller. A bit of a rollercoaster read for me. Some parts had me gripped and other sections dragged and I could feel myself skim reading sections of description. I would definitely recommend if you enjoy psychological thrillers. There were quite a few twists but the final sequence was a bit long winded for me.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for allowing me to read a preview copy.

This book was entertaining. But as the plot progressed you have to suspend any belief and just go along for the ride. Well written.

This is a great read, and certainly not what I imagined it would be from reading the description! Felicity Lloyd is working as a research scientist in South Georgia. It quickly becomes clear that she has fled there for her own safety, and is terrified that her pursuer is going to find her. When she sees the name Freddie Lloyd on the passenger list of an incoming ship, she has to flee. The story then goes back 9 months to Cambridge, where Felicity is living and having counselling after suffering some fugue episodes. She starts to emerge as a character with severe psychological problems. This is a real roller coaster of a story, which I highly recommend as a jolly good read! Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.

This book for off to a promising start with an interesting and original location. But as the plot unfolds the reader is expected to suspend disbelief too often for this to be a satisfying read. It got me through a couple of days of lockdown but under normal circumstances I may well have given up.

Sharon Bolton's fabulous psychological thriller is a winner for me. It features the wonderful South Georgian landscape which is described so well that I could almost feel the cold wind, smell the churning seas and hear the glaciers groaning.

Glaciologist Felicity Lloyd is on a 2-year placement with the British Antarctic Survey but she has secrets and fears, which materialise in the form of a visitor arriving on the very last tourist ship of the summer season. Much of the action takes place in flashbacks from Felicity's recent past in Cambridge, when she suffered multiple blackouts. Her therapist, Dr Joe Grant regresses her with hypnosis and make some disturbing discoveries. They both become involved in the search for someone who is killing and terrorising the local homeless population, as well as committing break-ins. Naturally, there are red herrings galore! My favourite character is Joe's pink-haired foul-mouthed police detective mother, Delilah.

The book is written from multiple viewpoints and the plot is cleverly presented with a couple of big reveals towards the end. A 5-star read, definitely recommended.

I had the pleasure to enjoy this book as an audiobook, it was so interesting and addictive that I was all day glued to my headphones, and I’ll have to admit that it was much easier to concentrate on the audio these days than reading it! So, if you are struggling with books, try this audiobook, I am sure you’ll love it! 😉 Maybe I am a little biased, I’ve been reading books by this author since the beginning, Sharon J. Bolton is one of my favourite authors, twisted and mysterious her books are always a must read!
In this case the story is told between different times, the present and the past (recent past) but the main characters will be the same, but we will discover what links them together and what is really happening thanks to the back story. Because, the story begins with Felicity Lloyd, she seems to be hiding from someone (almost at the end of the world), what we don’t know is the why and who. On the other side there’s a mysterious character who seems to stalk her, why? There are so many questions on this book! It took me a while to discover the plot of the story, there were a few “twists” that I predicted from the beginning but it didn’t spoil the story or the ending!
A part from the mystery of the book, I loved the background of the story, the scientific part of the book is so interesting! Who doesn’t love to learn something when they are reading?
This had been an amazing trip, original and addictive, The Split is your next read, ready?

Unfortunately this wasn't the best book I''ve read from Sharon Bolton. It started well enough with Felicity finding herself in remote South Georgia with work but also fleeing Freddie her husband, but when he finds her the hunt is on,the story then flicks back to Cambridge where Felicity lived. This is when the book lost my interest as it became bogged down with meaningless dialogue and for me got confusing also, when the book flicked back to South Georgia for the ending it picked up again but I'd lost interest by then to be honest, other readers may enjoy it but for me it I just didn't enjoy at all.A 2 star read at best for me.
