Even though I came in new to this series with this book, the author had enough references to past books that kept the plot moving without making me feel lost. I liked how the author wove some folklore into the story. I thought that the characters were realistic, and the law enforcement techniques were accurate. I look forward to reading more of this series. For a full review, please visit my blog at Fireflies and Free Kicks. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for a digital ARC of the book.

I have read and enjoyed every book in this series and I was happy to read this one as well.

Dave and Jenna are tasked with keeping Black Rock Falls safe, and that isn't easy with the number of murders that seem to occur there! This book is full of quite gruesome murders and I like the way the team solves them. I wish Wolfe had a bigger part to play, and his daughters too, but that is ok.

A good, solid book, yet again.

4.5 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the read. All opinions are entirely my own.

Book eight opens up with a murder, a 911 call by a wife saying her husband has been killed. What looks like a murder turns into more murders and actually a serial killer. Jenna and Kane are working the case when they are sent help from the FBI agents Jo and Ty. Hopefully, they will show in the next book they were good characters and added to the story.
Getting into the story you find the person they are looking for has been around for 20 years and has changed his M O so it has been difficult for people to find him now that he is in their neck of the woods they have a chance to catch him hopefully before more bodies show up. Some twists will keep you going with the story and the characters will also are from the other books and because of that, the story flows though it is a mystery, suspense. A very good book once again.

'Her Broken Wings' is the eighth book in the bestselling series featuring Detectives Alton and Kane. I have read, reviewed and absolutely every book in the series to date. I read the synopsis for 'Her Broken Wings' and it certainly sounded like another cracking read. I must by psychic because that's exactly what it is- an absolutely cracking read, which I thoroughly enjoyed but more about that in a bit.
It didn't take me long at all to get into this story. In fact as soon as I glimpsed the title and the cover that was it I had to get a copy of the book, which sounds really superficial I know. For me, 'Her Broken Wings' was the definition of an unputdownable page turner of a read. I picked my Kindle up only intending to read a couple of chapters to fill in the odd half an hour, but I immersed myself in the story so fully that I was still sat there reading well over two hours later. I just couldn't bear to put the book to one side for any length of time for fear of missing out on some vital clue or on some crucial information pertinent to the investigation. I tried to pace myself as to how quickly I read the book but my attempt at pacing was soon thrown out of the window because I was enjoying the book too much to put it down. I soon reached the end of the book which I was disappointed about because it meant that I had to say a goodbye to Detectives Alton and Kane.
'Her Broken Wings' is superbly written but then I think that to be true of all of the books in the Alton & Kane series. The author has one of those writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. She writes so realistically that you begin to feel as though you are part of the story yourself and an extra member of the investigative team. I even found that I began to interact with the book in the sense that I 'talked' to the characters as if they could hear me. Yes I know that sounds silly and that this is a work of fiction but I find that if I enjoy a book to the extent that I enjoyed this book then I tend to 'live' the story as if it were real. I was gripped by this story and on the edge of my seat throughout the story.
For me, 'Her Broken Wings' was another cracking addition to the series featuring Detectives Alton and Kane. This series just keeps getting better and better. I definitely recommend this author and this series to other readers. I will definitely be reading more of D. K. Hood's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

“he owed it to the people of this fine county, the very best in murder and mayhem.”

Yes I’m back in Black Rock Falls for another brutal case for Jenna Alton, Dave Kane and the team. And as the quote above suggests, it’s a case packed with murder and mayhem but as this is my eighth trip to Montana, I expect nothing less from D. K. Hood!

The randomness of the killings really pushes the team to their investigative limits. There is no logic or pattern to the choices the not-so-friendly killer is making. But as the reader of this dark work of crime fiction, I get an rather entertaining insight to the killer’s logic…

she’d become almost a cult figure among men like him.

I love the sporadic chapters featuring the killer. Once again, Black Rock Falls is at the mercy of a serious bloodthirsty psychopath … and this one is worse than the last one! This is one manic person on the edge!

And then oh the descriptions! …blood had matted her blonde hair into red dreadlocks.…” the imagery! Hood totally immersed me into life in Black Rock Falls, I always feel I’m there with the team and Her Broken Wings is no different. It’s like I’m on holiday but it’s not really a holiday with the horrific crimes set out before me!

There are a few different characters to mention… one character who made more of an appearance was Duke, Kane’s canine sidekick. Despite the harsh weather, he played his part on more than one occasion. he seriously protective of our Jenna and I love him for it! And then there is the new additions. I’m looking forward to getting to know Jo and Ty better… hope they are a firm fixture in the series. They are an interesting pairing to add to the already diverse team but they both bring plenty to the Black Rock Falls table.

Yet again Hood has written a brilliantly dark and twisted crime thriller. The mayhem that plays out on the page is addictive to say the least. This Black Rock Falls addict is well and truly satisfied by the hit she’s received…. big question is…. when do I get my next one?!?

From the beginning this books engages the reader, a suspected hit on Lucas Robinson while asleep next to his wife, next two men gunned down after their truck crashes, only evidence linking the crimes together, a crow feather found at each crime scene.. Jenna and Kane realizing they have serial killer in their midst call in FBI profiler Jo Blake to assist. Pooling their resources together, it now becomes a race against time to catch the killer before he strikes again.
This is an edge of your seat gripping suspenseful novel that keeps the reader guessing, the next chapter in the Anton and Kane series is a must read for D.K Hood fans. FYI, I thoroughly enjoyed it,couldn't put it down, only at the end did I understand why the title was chosen.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to review this book.

This is the eighth book in the Detective Alton series by D.K. Hood. They are written so that they can be read as a standalone book but I would strongly recommend reading them all as the characters grow and develop as the books go on and, if you didn’t read them, you would be missing out on some great reads.

I love the two main characters, Detectives Alton and Kane who make a great team, together they manage to find themselves desperately hunting a crazy killer who is once again terrorising Black Rock Falls.

The setting that these books take place in is very much a character of its own and I can picture the main settings clearly in my mind. I love reading these books because I know that I will enjoy it, I know that the author will have found some more warped ways of killing people and Her Broken Wings does not disappoint.

These books are fun to read, I love catching up with the characters as they grow and it was nice that Her Broken Wings featured two new characters who teamed up with Alton and Kane to hunt the killer.

I’m not going to give the story away, but if you have read any of the previous books in this series then I’m sure that you will be reading this one, and if you haven’t then you will enjoy the rollercoaster ride. Hold on tight!

It seems that Black Rock Falls, Montana, must be a sociopathic serial killer magnet and, this time at Halloween, another has found his way to the small town by the mountains. The bodies are coming fast and furious and Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane enlist the help of FBI operatives in a nearby town to help them nab this one known as the Chamelon Killer. Lots of grisly murders and a host of suspects keep the detectives busy. This 8th book in the series has lots of action and many different characters to keep readers fully engaged and rapidly turning the pages. Even though the outcome is predictable, it was an entertaining police procedural and crime thriller.

I've read all the previous books in the series and will continue to do so. Kane and Alton have a work partnership as well as an obvious personal connection. Their relationship is a co-dependency and they certainly have plenty to do in "Serial Killer Central" as the crime rate in Black Rock Falls is off the charts!

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review.

Yet again another corking read from the pen of this author. Part of a series of books yet easy enough to read as a stand-alone, although you will find you want to read the previous ones . The chemistry that Jenna and Kane share give the book a great base line for the novels to work around. They both keep their past secret , they trust each other implicitly and would if needed die for each other. In this investigation they are joined by two other characters also complicated by their pasts. They must all work together to find the killer before the bloodshed gets out of hand. As they take on various strands of the case can they bring them all into one conclusive ending or will the murderer get away. Fast paced, thrilling from the beginning with more twists than a packet of fusilli pasta this book will keep you guessing to the end.

Another great novel by DK Hood. This is the eighth in the series and can be read as a stand alone. Hood offers readers an engrossing crime fiction/police procedural with a strong cast of characters. They all hold unique attributes that play to a wide array of readers. The crime aspect is completely engrossing as the reader is led in one direction only to be yanked in another. Hood does well to manipulate the story line with just enough foreshadowing to keep the plot interesting but not give an overwhelming sense of inscrutability. Good read. 4 stars.

Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC of #HerBrokenWings which was read and reviewed voluntarily.

D.K Hood sure knows how to start a book with a bang and keep the momentum going till the very end. Following her pattern of dark, creepy prologues that compel you to keep reading (albeit with the lights on) Her Broken Wings makes for a fantastic, twisty & suspenseful read! This series has proved to be a strong and gripping police procedural with a strong mix of suspense & thrill. While I agree with some, that the small-town characters with their fancy equipment & Black Rock Falls being a magnet for psychos seem unbelievable, I lap it all up, because that's how much I enjoy the writing!

When Rowley is called to the scene of a crime in the middle of the night, he discovers the bloodied body of Lucas Robinson lying in his own bed. His wife Carol, in shock, is found hiding in a broom closet nearby. Incoherent and almost feral, Carol cannot give the police a full statement. Examining the murder scene, Jenna concludes with Wolfe & Kane that this is the work of a trained professional. But who would want to kill plain old Lucas? Digging deeper Jenna discovers links to other people who are killed in the same cold manner. When the killer escalates with a mass murder at a remote ranch on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls, Jenna knows for sure that she’s dealing with a murderer more twisted than any other she’s faced before.

I like the characters in this series and with the addition of two more potential recurring characters, this series has gotten more interesting! Both characters are interesting and I'm excited to see what the author will have in store for them. The plot was as usual - amazing! This one was a page-turner! While there is a small part in the back of my brain that says it's highly unusual for a small town to see such a large number of serial killers waltz in and out, I ignore that voice and continue to enjoy reading this deeply dark & disturbing series.

Thank You, NetGalley, Bookouture & D. K. Hood for an arc!

So far, I have only read one of the other books in this fabulous series - Break the Silence - and now this one, Her Broken Wings. Even so, I consider myself qualified enough to say that D.K. Hood is a remarkable writer, and this novel is a work of brilliance!

In Her Broken Wings, Detective Jenna Alton arrives at a secluded family home to find Carol Robinson shivering in shock, having just witnessed an intruder shoot her husband Lucas in cold blood. As Jenna and her team begin their investigation, they find a black feather which they believe is a mark of the killer(s) presence, as when further bodies are discovered, more black feathers are left at the murder scenes. With Black Rock Falls starting to resemble a mass murder zone, Jenna knows for sure that she’s dealing with perpetrator(s) more twisted than any other she’s ever faced before. As the town begins to fill with revellers for the annual Halloween festival, Jenna has to work quickly to prevent any more lives from being taken. But as the killer always seems to be one step ahead of the investigation, has she finally met a murderer who can outwit her?

Sheriff Jenna Alton makes a very likeable detective although a little short on inspiration and self-belief. Her deputy, David Kane is a former Special Forces marksman with exceptional profiling skills.

This novel was a fantastic, electrifying and solid police procedural and a well-balanced thriller that had me glued to the pages. I didn't want to put it down as I was desperate to know the outcome of the story. Though Black Rock Falls is a small place, Jenna and her team were still left with a lot of suspects to chase in a very tangled web of mystery. This really was a spectacular crime-thriller that grabbed me hook, line and sinker. The team embarked on an exciting and exhilarating mission to find the perpetrator, calling in the FBI to help, in the form of experienced, smart agents Jo Blake and Ty Carter. All the time the tension was being ratcheted up a notch as D. K. Hood smacked me with some captivating misdirection and planted a few red herrings. The writing flowed effortlessly with a swift pace as it delved into a host of themes all tackled, in my opinion, with care and precision.

I will be seeking out the first six instalments of this masterful series, and I now have a copy of book #1, Don't Tell a Soul. Her Broken Wings is a brilliant, nail-biting and confidently recommended crime-thriller, so don't miss out!

I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel, at my request, from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

SPOILER ALERT - there are spoilers (content warnings) at the end of this review (but they are marked)

It's raining bodies in Black Rock Falls, Montana.

Detective Jenna Alton arrives at a secluded home to find the body of Lucas Robinson in bed, lying in a pool of his own blood. His wife, Carol, claims she watched an intruder shoot Lucas in cold blood, but was unable to see the killer. Soon Lucas's mistress is found strangled to death in the center of the small town. Then the killer escalates with a mass murder at a remote ranch on the outskirts of Black Rock Falls, setting up a disturbingly grotesque scene where the ranch was preparing for Halloween.

The opening of Her Broken Wings is chillingly written, and the book is fairly gruesome. I liked Jenna, Deputy Kane, and the medical examiner. Their interaction is interesting and I enjoyed following the case up until the climax. The characters have substantial history which is only hinted at in this book. Duke, Depute Kane's rescue dog, is wonderful. The climax wasn't quite satisfying to me, but I'll put my concerns with that in the spoilers below.

At one point, the term "savage" is used to describe a Native American male. That term should never be used in relation to a Native American.

SPOILERS BELOW:

Content Warnings: SPOILER Domestic violence; Death of a child; Torture; Dissociative identity disorder (DID), but I'm not sure the portrayal works at the end. It sounds like the killer realizes they used disguises to get close to victims, but I thought with DID individuals don't believe they're putting on a disguise, they fully believe they are that person. The killer does change voices. I'm no expert and could absolutely be wrong. Perhaps people with DID have more conscious control over the condition than I, as a layperson, am aware. Additionally, psych professionals in the book use the term "crazy," which doesn't seem professional. They also use the term "normal" which rings false - perhaps "not dangerous" would have worked better in context. END SPOILERS

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC. The opinions in this review are honest and my own.

Although its the middle of the night, Detective Jenna Alton receives an emergency call from Deputy Jake Rowley. An intruder has shot a Lucas Robinson in his bed, according to a phone call from the wife Carol.
But this is only the start of a killing spree, that will continue all week. What type of serial killer is this. Alton and Kane find that at least they do have some suspects.
Another enjoyable and well-written crime story with its cast of well-drawn characters. Though in this case suspicions were rised early concerning who was the guilty party.

Detective Jenna Alton, along with her team investigate the murder that started with a home invasion.

Before they can really sink their teeth into this killing, the killer escalates with a mass murder at a remote ranch on the outskirts of town.

As the investigation continues, they find many more cases spread through several states all bear the same manner of killing .... down to the black feather left at each scene.

As the town begins to fill with revelers for the annual Halloween festival, Jenna has to work fast to stop any more lives being taken.

Someone is wearing a mask .... and has his eye on Jenna.

Although 8th in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. I highly recommend starting at the beginning ... how Jenna and her team all wound up in the same place for various reasons is well worth reading ... especially as Jenna is not who she says she is. This crime fiction is well written, as are all the books in this series. The plot is tightly woven leading to an explosive unpredictable ending.

This one introduces two additional characters who appear to be able to help Jenna and her team with anything that comes up ..... I look forward to seeing more of them. Also a new character is Pumpkin, the cat with the orange eyes who seems to attach himself to Jenna. Wonder what Duke, the dog, will have to say about that.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Her Broken Wings is the eighth instalment in the Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane series set in Black Rock Falls, Montana, however, it is not necessary to have read any of the preceding books to enjoy this one. When Lucas Robinson is shot at point-blank range is his sleep by an intruder his wife Carol, who had been lying beside him in bed, is almost paralysed by fear but manages to take cover under the same bed. She later darts down the stairs, hiding in a cupboard and calls the police in hysterics. Jenna is dubious of her story and suspects she is somehow involved yet all of their forensics back up that she was in bed beside him when he was brutally offed. As they examine the scene they find a black feather in Lucas’s blood and it's clear it is a calling card when more bodies start to drop accompanied by the same black feather. It is beginning to look like Black Rock Falls has become the hunting ground for a serial killer once again.

Each of the eight instalments has been incredibly gripping, yet there was something extra addictive and captivating about Her Broken Wings. The action is hard-hitting, the pace rapid, and the twists and turns plentiful. The writing is straightforward, which makes a welcome change from those trying to pack their narrative with unnecessary verbiage, and the story unravels in a linear and logical manner from beginning to end. It's high-octane and palpably tense from the get-go with the most dangerous, violent and merciless murderer to date; it very much appealed to me that the killer was well-versed in forensics and due to this it was going to much more difficult to collar him. You are given little time to breathe between all of the thrills and you feverishly turn the pages until the completely unexpected ending hits you like a bolt from the blue. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Bookouture for an ARC.

Woohoo, it’s PUBLICATION DAY!!!! What a better way for me to celebrate this than share my review of this book and do check out Claire at A Knight Reads as she is with me today!
I know I say this every time but please can I have more Rowley! There was just nowhere near enough of him this time!! But I can forgive Ms Hood just this once mind you because I did enjoy the new FBI support team in Jo Blake and Ty Carter, two new unknown quantities and it felt like they fitted in straight away. What is also nice, it widens the net for support both professionally and as a friendship for all members. It’s pretty isolated being Jenna, Kane and Shane but they have always had each other. Whether the newbies will be invited to know their secrets will be one thing but until then, it feels like friends in our little family and I love this!
And we have new animals!! Zorro is Ty’s dog, again I hope we have more of him! But we have a cat, I am so happy about this, plus I love its name -Pumpkin! I love this because it’s my mini me’s nickname so this did make me smile! Plus this cat was badass!
Well, it’s near Halloween so it must be the hunting season in Black Rock Falls, by this I mean for my favourite duo Jenna and Kane. This time it appears that serial killers really do flock to the town to try and outwit Jenna, seriously when will they learn!
This is most definitely the darkest and twisty one in the series! An ending I didn’t see coming, brutal killings and so much suspense it was just palpable. How Hood gets her inspiration I will never know…in fact, maybe I don’t want to know!
Straight from the opening page, it was horrific and, and yes my favourite word, brutal! I really did not see how the beginning could ever relate to a home invader and then on to the other deaths. But once the thread is picked the web unravels and well we still don’t see! This time I felt it wasn’t until Ms Hood decided it was time to let us know because even once we got the bad guy, we were left with a lot of pondering. Man, that was good!
Already it’s been teased that book 9 will be darker, now I am a bit unnerved by this, because of 8 is the darkest yet….just how much darker are we talking! I want Jenna and Kane and the team to enjoy their skiing and their time away, let’s not ruin that just yet, Ah?
There are a whole host of themes running through this book and they are all tackled, in my opinion, with care and precision. The most interesting of them all, I felt could have had more focus, was the one surrounding the killer. What that is, well I can’t say, but it fascinates me for sure! If you want to know, go get a copy of the book!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this outing, yes the deaths are way more, I can’t say brutal again, rough and inhuman (how do you like that!!). We are left breathless at times watching the team, being watched, whilst solving the murders, it’s just one big game! I devoured this book, just like I do with all the books and now I am left feeling bereft as I have to wait for book 9! Can I sulk for a bit now?!

I absolutely love this series and reading this book was like catching up with old friends.
Kane and Alton have their hands full with multiple murders so call in the help of the local FBI which is Jo and Carter.
They get off to an awkward start but soon become great allies and both groups have the aim of finding the killer, before they strike again.
The scene they come across together is pretty gruesome and when they realise a young waitress was used as bait to get the other victims closer, they’re all completely shocked.
Jenna and the team work tirelessly to try and find the killer and just when they think they’ve got it all wrapped up, the unthinkable happens.
This is a fantastic read that had me hooked from the first few pages and as for the final few chapters - I loved them!
If you’ve not read this series you really don’t know what you’re missing.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

The first thing that stands out to me in Her Broken Wings is the setting. The isolated area of Black Rock Falls is encountering a storm, which Hood describes so well and I immediately felt myself drawn to the scene and feeling the same anxieties that the characters would experience in such harsh conditions.

It is hard to believe that we have now reached the eighth book in the series and it just gets better and better. I love spending time with Alton and Kane, whose relationship goes from strength to strength as they always have each others' back. It was interesting to see how they react to an additional member of the team in Jo, who is a psychological profiler, and I would be interested to learn more about her life in future instalments.

The investigation in Her Broken Wings definitely feels more complex than in the previous books in the series, and I found Hood's exploration of disassociative identity disorder absolutely fascinating. It must have involved an incredible amount of research and I must commend Hood for weaving it into the plot so well.

As the novel reaches its conclusion, there is a definite sense of danger. I loved the tension this created and I often found myself reading really fast to find out what happened!
