Her Broken Wings by D.K. Hood is the eighth book in this author's Detectives Kane and Alton series. So far this series has been an excellent crime thriller treat. This book is no exception. Once again Sheriff Jenna Alton and Detective Dave Kane need to solve a murder mystery. This time a serial killer is in town. It seems the small town of Black Rock Falls has become a magnet for all kinds of murderers including serial killers. In this story Jenna and Kane believe they are facing a murderer with a split personality. There's plenty of action and suspense to keep readers turning the pages until the end.

Detectives Kane and Alton #8

It's the middle of the ight when Jenna Alton receives the call that someone has broken in and shot Lucas Ribinsin whilst he slept in his bed with his wife lying next to him. A black feather has been left at the scene. Then two bodies have been found in the woods. They've also been shot with feathers placed nearby. Theres a killer on the .oose and Kane and Alton have to try and catch him before he kills anymore. Theres also a cold case where a young mother and her son were murdered by her abusive husband whilst trying to escape him. One of her sons managed to escape. Now some human bones have been discovered.

I love this series. It just gets better and better. The story is taking place around Halloween some perfect time for disguises. The killing spree continues and Kane and Alton have to work out who the killer is. We are introduced to two new characters who are FBI Agents. Lake and Carter are here to assist Kane and Alton and they make a good addition to the team. I hope we meet them again in another book. The pace is fast and the action starts from the beginning. There's plenty of twists but the last one I never saw coming. A great addition to a fantastic series. This is the best book in the series, so far.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author D. K. Hood for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

😠Wow, this small Montana town is indeed Murder Central: Sheriff Jenna and crew to the rescue!👻

4.5🌟stars
A good, suspenseful and action-filled thriller that, though I had my theories, actually kept me guessing right through to the surprise twist at the end. I just pitied the police and medical examiner who hardly got a chance to take a deep breath until more cases piled on. I love a good serial killer story and the occasional change of perspective into the killer's mind was effective. The descriptions of eerie Halloween decorations and misty fall weather added to the creepy factor; were I a resident of Black Rock Falls, I would be locked inside once the sun goes down (though, in this town, even that might not save me!)😕.

Thanks to publishers Bookouture and NetGalley for providing an advance complimentary copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

Her Broken Wings by D.K. Hood is the 8th in the Detectives Kane and Alton series.

First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Series Background:    (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books)
Former DEA, Jenna Alton is now the Sheriff in Black Rock Falls, Montana.  Her past is a secret.  Deputy David Kane's background is also a secret.  He was a Special Forces sharpshooter.  Then there is  Forensic Scientist Shane Wolfe, who is not only a Medical Examiner with amazing computer skills, he used to be Kane’s handler. So, with a few other deputies, Jenna has a good team to handle crime in the small Black Rock Falls town, which seems to have more murders than a small town should.

My Synopsis:   (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions)

Lucas Robinson was shot while sleeping next to his wife.  He was the first of a series of strange murders that are happening in Black Rock Falls.  Things escalate, and on Wolfe's recommendation, they call in FBI Agents Jo Blake and Ty Carter.  Jo is sure that the perpetrator is a serial killer that has evaded the FBI for a few years.

Meanwhile,  Atohi's cousin has returned to the reservation, and he is not the man he once was.  Brad Kelly left the reservation when he was 18.  Upon finding out that his father was dead, Brad's memory of the abuse his family suffered returned, so he came back.  He remembers the night that his mother and brother were murdered by his father, and he alone made it to the reserve.  He remembers that the police did nothing.  He is quick to anger, and insists that their bodies be located and given a proper burial, but he has little respect for the police, or anyone else.

As the body count rises, Jenna is thankful for the extra assistance.

My Opinions:

I like the addition of the FBI agents, and hope they return in future books.

The plot was interesting and dealt with both mental health issues and physical abuse.  The author handled these topics well.  There was a lot of action, which resulted in a quick read.  As well, the identity of the perpetrator was a surprise, so that was good.

I have the same problems with all of the books in the series.  The first is the romantic relationship between Jenna and Dave, which often lacks professionalism.  The second was a little less pronounced in this book, which is the fact that Jenna often plays second fiddle to Dave.  In this one, she was more of a leader.  However, again Jenna was "amazed by his knowledge".  Comments like that continue to exasperate me.

So, even though I have some issues with the characters, the plots always make up for it, and I will continue to be entertained by this series.

On another note.  The title "her broken wings" seems like an after-thought at the end of the story.  It's a good name for a shelter,  but I don't feel it was tied in sufficiently to the story.

Wow what a great read with bodies popping up left right and centre!

The recipe :
1 x psychopath with dissociative identity disorder
1 x no nonsense taking sheriff Jenna Alton
1 x deputy David Kane
1 x cheating husband to set it off
1 x drunk, woman beating scum of the earth

Method:
Mix all together with seasoning of stupid and jealous people

Result:
Brilliant and twisted story with some curveballs that will leave you with a mouth hanging open!

Highly recommended!!

Thank you to Netgally and Bookouture for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

In an upsetting prologue, a woman tries vainly to escape her abusive husband but is killed as her small son watches in horror. Years later, a woman lies terrified in bed as a killer enters her bedroom and shoots her husband as he sleeps next to her. Are these terrible crimes related? How? Even as Sheriff Jenna Alton interviews the wife of the victim, two more bodies are discovered far away from this crime scene.

The small town of Black Rock Falls seem an unlikely location for a prolific serial killer but as seemingly unrelated murders start to mount, Alton and her partner Kane must discover the identity of the killer even as the violence escalates. A grisly tableau provides some needed evidence but a surprise twist nearly results in a tragic conclusion.

Her Broken Wings has so many strengths: strong, likable characters, a dark and twisted plot, and well written descriptions of police procedure. The 8th in the series, it is not a stand-alone thriller. I wish I had started with the first Alton and Kane mystery because I wanted to know more about their backgrounds and relationships with the medical examiner and FBI profiler. Fans of this series are in for a treat but new readers may want to start at the beginning. 4 stars.

#NetGalley #Her Broken Wings (Detectives Kane and Alton Book 8) #Bookouture

This is book 8 in the series but the first one that I have read. It does well as a standalone. A well written story with many complex characters. I look forward to going back and reading the previous books in this series.

This series is like the energizer bunny, it keeps on giving and giving as it takes your breath away. I have read everyone of Detectives Kane & Alton series and hope they never end. To me they are similar in the JD Robb Series , no they are not sci fi or in the future, they are police procedurals where you care about all involved and the base is always like coming home, you know your Sheriff and the team, and then your catapulted into the sky screaming as you follow the twisted tale of murder. You start with the prologue as a battered wife is sneaking out with her children and you never stop. Then a man is murdered in his own bed. Two petty thieves play chicken with dire consequences and each murder is different - or is it? They find a feather at each scene, but some seen hit man and some seem passionate, how can't that be? In this book two new characters are brought in. A FBI base is being opened about 3 hrs a way from Black Rock Falls and the leader is Jo a profiler Wolff knows. The only member of her team Dave, is an ex seal, not a team player and they come on board to help. The conclusion is not the one I came to thank goodness. I actively search for this series every time I am on NetGalley. Thank you D.K.Hood for your awesome writing, Bookouture and NetGalley for allowing me to grab this arc. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions as everyone should read this series, just make sure to buckle up, it's always a wild, wild ride.

A big thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is book 8 in a series, and I was not sure if it would read ok as a stand alone. While I didn't really understand Mane and Jennas relationship overall it reads well as a.stand alone. This is my first time reading this series and author. Very complicated and a challenging mystery. Good read. 3.5 stars.

Her Broken Wings is the next in the long running series of Alton and Kane.  I have been a very big fan of this series since it first started to be released.

This series brings with it a little bit of everything.  Undercover agents who were burned in the daily jobs that they had and are now undercover.  A solid group who you would never think would survive in a small town in the USA.

Jenna is still the feisty sheriff whose job is to keep BlackRock falls safe for all.  She has a great ability at getting herself into trouble which is where her right hand man comes in.

Dave has a past that one wishes he could forget.  He is strong and at times overly protective of Jenna.  It shows a real soft side to him that you wouldn't ever suspect.  He seems to have the brash no nonsense attitude but it covers the inner fragility.

The story was entertaining however as I keep going on in this series I realize that this town must be cursed.  So much goes wrong in town and that is scary. All issues are taken care of by the wonderful team that Jenna has.

I do miss Wolfe more as he doesn't have as much of a role as his job is not the same.  I wish to see more of him as well as his daughter who wants to follow in his footsteps.

This series just keeps me guessing and that is never a bad thing.

A thrilling read; twisty and dark. A real page turner.
Lucas Robinson is murdered while sleeping next to his wife and the only evidence is a black feather. Two bodies are found in a the woods nearby, they appear to have been chased before being shot. Different MO but two black feathers are found at the scene. Do Alton and Kane have another serial killer in their town?
Two new characters, FBI Agents Blake and Carter are asked to assist. They make a great addition to the team and will hopefully be called upon again to help out.

Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC

This is book #8 of the Kane and Alton series. Whilst it is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone book. We are back at Black Rock Falls during Halloween, and the murder capital of Montana (if the previous books are anything to go by!) are even scarier when the body count keeps increasing. Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane enlist the help of the FBI in catching what looks like a serial killer in town.

The book jumps straight into the action with the brutal murder of Lucas Robinson, who is shot dead whilst sleeping next to his wife. What appears to be a bungled robbery becomes more sinister when a black feather is found at the scene. When more bodies turn up, with accompanying feathers, Kane and Alton realise they have a difficult case to deal with.

I love this series and I love Kane, Alton and Wolfe’s characters. Over the past 7 books, I wondered whether there was ever going to be any romance between Sheriff Alton and her deputy, but I think I’ve now come to the conclusion that I’d much rather see them remain as just friends as I’d hate to see anything spoil the working relationship they have. The introduction of two new FBI characters was interesting, and I’d love to see more of them in future books – if for nothing more than another good-looking male to join Kane and Wolfe, and a female friend for Jenna!!

The story was, like previous books, fast paced, gripping and full of action. The suspense was turned up a notch with the time of year keeping the ‘scary’ theme going throughout the book! As if it was scary enough though with bodies at every turn of the page, trying to work out which were Halloween set-ups and which were real was hypnotic and nerve shattering! There are lots of murders, dead bodies and suspects to pick from. It certainly didn’t take long to settle into the story and by the end of the first chapter, I was hooked and I didn’t put it down until the book was finished.

The story have me lots of red herrings and false clues, and even though I thought I had it all worked out, I was proved wrong at the reveal, which was very cleverly done. The setting of Black Rock Falls at Halloween, with plenty of cold weather and icy conditions matched the tension in the book perfectly! I’d still like to know though why there are still people living in this town as with the amount of murders and serial killers, I would have moved out a long time ago!!

This is a fabulous series of books, and with each book it just keeps getting better and better. If you haven’t read any yet, then I’d highly recommend clearing your diary for a few weeks and starting back at the beginning. With regards to this latest instalment, if you love a suspense-filled, gruesome crime thriller, then this is most definitely the perfect book for you!!

I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Her Broken Wings’, the eighth in the Detectives Kane and Alton series written by D K Hood, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Carol and Lucas Robinson are asleep when Carol hears someone moving towards their room. The intruder enters and shoots Lucas dead, leaving Carol alive but terrified. Just as Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane are enjoying a quiet period, the death of Lucas Robinson marks the start of a series of murders. They join forces with Ty Carter of the FBI and Behavioural Analyst Jo Blake who think these murders have been committed by the same killer who’s been plaguing Baltimore and nicknamed the Chameleon Killer. Jenna has a reputation for successfully hunting down serial killers but will she be successful this time?

I’ve enjoyed all of the previous seven books in the series and with ‘Her Broken Wings’ Ms Hood has yet again proved her ability to write a fast-paced and exciting crime thriller that has lots of action, twists and turns, and enough suspects to keep me guessing. I surmised halfway through who the killer was and I’m glad to say I wasn’t mistaken, although it came with a surprising twist at the end. I’ve enjoyed meeting up again with Jenna, Kane and Deputies Jake Rowley, Shane Wolfe and Shane’s daughter Emily who between the two of them carry out the ME duties. This is another addictive thriller that I’m more than happy to recommend.

Wow, wow, wow, what a dark, twisted, fabulous read this was. I can’t get enough in this series. I just love this series and pray there are many more to come. Yes this is part of this series but you can read this as a stand alone novel. I have read many books in this series not in the exact order and I still understand what is going on all.

This book is about about one crime that was committed many years ago that is now affecting the present. A woman many years got killed because she tried to escape an abusive relationship with her children. This case is tied in to the present case of a man who was a cheater that was killed in front of his wife. What do these cases have common? You find out these answers and many more by the end of this book.

I can’t say enough good things about this author and her books. I love this series and can’t get enough of it. In this book they bring in two new FBI characters and I love them. They mesh so well with the other characters that you can’t believe they just met. They all work so well together. I also loved the fact this book focused on the psychological aspect of the killer. There were so many theories on the killer that you didn’t know which one to pick. I couldn’t believe the ending to this book. You thought they had the killer and then bam they were wrong. This book kept you guessing until the end. That is why this is such a great book. You never knew what was going to happen next.

Between the plot, characters and all the twists in this book it made it an easy and fast read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
